Been busy doing some Extreme Chunkin at night under the new moon with good results so no new fishing content today. But here's some info on the rigs I use that can handle big stripers and some other quick tips on chunking.

LOVE your philosophy of using heavy enough gear.. viewers here are going to come to your conclusion on their own anyway from painful experience, might as well save them the pain! Also -- Kudos for the Improved Clinch! The simplest and most underrated knot! Strong as hell!

one of my favorite comments haha. its important to always be prepared for the biggest fish you might cross paths with to save yourself some serious heartbreak. love the improved clinch, never had any issues with itand they take about 10 seconds to tie

Back in 1987 I was chunking at night between Narrow River and Point Judith Light.I was using a 11ft lamaglass coventional rod and a Simano Triton reel during a big blow ...I was catching some nice bass and some blues around 11pm I had a big bass crush the pogie head and went right in the rocks ...I finally landed her weighed 52 lbs my line was 40lb big game and a 50lb big leader it was so frayed it was almost cut right through...I still have that rig its been retired for a while ...don't use big meat sticks anymore...great to see you doing the night thing..

I have a go list for shore and boat. My leader is 10’ of 80# Trilene, boat is Big Game. I fish at night and feel that the visibility is a non issue. Traditional Big Game is plenty resistant to abrasion. I’ve been fishing with J hooks for nearly 50 years and finding it difficult to retrain my muscle memory. I remember my dad showing me how to set the hook on a bass live-lining herring. I’ve been trying for the last few years and my set ratio is improving. Great videos.

Yea I am the same way, used J hooks for a while so now on every hit I just want to set the hook hard but I am getting used to circles, they hook up ratio is honestly a little better I think at least when it comes to chunking

Snellers knot, uni knot, double uni knot, palomar knot, dropper loop, perfection loop and an albright special, gt knot are the best knots I've ever used. The fish'n fool knot is a variation of the uni knot and is also a strong knot. The bimini twist retains 100% of the lines breaking strength. The spider hitch is faster and easier to tie and retains about 85% of the lines breaking strength. I use a few more knots, but the ones I've listed are good strong knots. Each has a purpose.

those are a lot of knots haha I really only tie polymers and improved clinch but I should definitely learn some more

Is your drag set very light? And then when u feel the weight of the fish, u quickly tighten the drag and reel?

Hey Johnny, I have been trying to decide what size circle hook for bunker head because I don’t have much luck usually because I have been using hooks that are too small
@Erwin838

I use size 8 or size 9. Right on the lip. They work great and casting is good

Bob the Garbage Man chunking is the only way to fish. Love chunkin Macks over bunker personally up here in the Cape. You strictly living that bunker or bust chunk life? Or do you use macks too? Where you hooking the fish chunks? I actually use much bigger hooks in the 8/0-10/0 size. Recently been 10/0. I have been experimenting with hooking macks, and have started going under the back bone of the mack and out the other side. Bait stays on longer. I have definitely lost a few hook sets with not the ideal amount of barb sticking out. So I am wondering if there's any suggestions. I have stayed away from bunker only because it has been sent to the moon on some of my casts trying to get over sand bars.

bob the garbage man is a legend. I've always chunked pogey its just my preference plus I usually see more bunker around RI than mackerel. 7/0 works well for me for chunking I don't usually fling off bait, but if I was to live line a full pogey I would definitely bump it up to a 8/0 or 9/0. I have used mackerel before though and caught bass with it so it's not a bad option either
