One of the common complaints about Apple's Homekit smarthome platform is that it's near impossible to customize your notifications. In this video, I walk though how to use the Homekit Convert to Shortcut automations to be able to reach out to IFTTT as your notification engine.
As I'm slowly trying to move all of my automations into the Apple ecosystem, I really wanted to keep as much as possible in native Homekit. Using the Convert to shortcuts URL feature allows me to have a native Homekit automation reach out to a IFTTT Webhook address which is connected to a notification service.
Although it's not 100% Homekit, it is super simple to configure and should allow many Homekit users to customize their notifications fairly easily.

OMG I soooooo appreciate the last part of this comment. It’s been a struggle. Now to keep the quality up! Totally agree. Once you start to figure out the lego blocks you have to play with in the Convert to Shortcuts automations, it really amazing how much control you have. I’m looking forward to finding the breaking points!

Thanks for this! I like seeing and learning from the more advanced automations. An alternative to using IFTTT for the notification is to use Pushcut, which also has a webhook URL for the notifications you set up.

Thanks for the support! Absolutely Pushcut is another option. You could also do this with Hone Assistant potentially. Last I looked the Pushcuts was a bit pricey compared to my IFTTT which is why I leaned this direction. Zappier is another direction where I’m sure you could make this work. Beautiful world where we have a lot of options!

this is very interesting. I downloaded controller but wasn't sure what to do with it yet as I have so many others but this was a great example!

Thanks Ben! The other thing which I just found out about and need to dig into is that Controller, if it’s in the foreground can log HomeKit messages and then you can export all that data as CSV or JSON. Kinda awesome for a data nerd to have access to that info and also going to be great for troubleshooting in the future!

What is the Controller app? Spotlight doesn't come up with anything.
