100% with you Ben! I’m finding I’m still having to use a 3rd party app like Eve or Home+ for the initial trigger if it’s no available in the home app. Once that’s done though, I’m finding the convert to shortcuts is really powerful!

Thanks Brad! This one has been a lot of fun! Looking forward to tweaking this a bit more with seasonal checks around the humidity piece. Putting the humidity check logic after turning the lights on was one of the biggest improvements for this automation. Definitely let us know what you get up to!

I LOVE convert to shortcuts but yours are probably a bit better than mine and a bit more elegant. Definitely do more of this, I think not many know about this

@@Homekitgeek oh I couldn’t agree more Chris! Get as much on RU-vid as you can! I’ve seen plenty people using eve or home+ for conditional automations but I convert them to shortcuts and I think it’s better. I would say there’s lots I don’t know aswell so please enlighten us! If statements and get status are really good in my opinion and even just the fact it has action x otherwise action y, sometimes you need that flexibility

Another way you can do automations is when your wake-up alarm is turned off, Siri can run a bunch of stuff including running other shortcuts within this automation. I have mine turn on certain lights, pause the playback of white noise on my HomePod Mini, turn down the volume (so it isn't so harsh first thing in the morning) and then gives me a wake up greeting, gives me the weather forecast for the day, gives me the air quality and air quality index, let's me know who my first client is and how long it will take me to drive to the client where I will be working, and if I don't have any clients scheduled for the day, it will give me a different greeting, and finally turns back up the volume.

Absolutely! I’m using a spare phone which gets left plugged in as almost a secondary automation platform where I use time-based personal shortcuts to trigger devices which do have Siri Shortcut support, but not HomeKit. Yes - I could do Homebridge or Hone Assistant, but I’m trying to stay within the Apple ecosystem as an experiment to see how far I can get while staying in the Apple yard. I’m really hoping Apple extends personal shortcuts triggers in iOS15 as there’s so much capability here. Also a huge fan of NFC tags throughout the house, car and even in my wallet. :)

My Automation/Scene worked: my front porch light remains on red until motion is detected (someone approaching, or us coming home, or a cat climbing the fence) and then it flares bright yellow for as long as the motion is detected. But what I still don't get is Shortcuts, except that I need to use it IF I want to sleep/wake my Apple TV. Otherwise Automations/Scenes seem to do everything else, including creating a button in the Home app, like the Shortcut button in its app; and both respond to key words to Siri. So other than the remote control for Apple TV not being accessible for an automation without Shortcuts, why else is Shortcuts important?

So what about turning those automations off? You will you a physical switch or when motion is not detected turn off master bath lights?

Hey Jeremy - In my case, these are Lutron switches and use a physical button so exactly, you're first option. We just turn them off as we leave the room. I'm definitely looking at increasing smarts here. There appears to be some issues with long lived automations ( if I put a long wait statement like 30 minutes it doesn't work ) so I do need to do some experimenting to see if I can get a handle on what the limitations are and come up with a good strategy.

What are you using for your sensors? I'd love to hear how you've managed this one? It could be an option, but I've found the occupancy sensors ( ecobee is most of my experience ) have been a lot slower than motion sensors to trigger an action. I don't want to end up in a position where I've got to add another sensor to the bathroom to make this work. The Hue motion sensor (what I'm using) us right now one of my preferred sensors because it's super quick reliable and has the temperature and lux sensors embedded as well. Granted the temp sensor is unreliable for anything detailed, but if you want to be notified when your basement suddenly drops by 5-10 degrees it does the trick.

Is there a way to use a smart button in homekit to trigger a shortcut to run a timer on my phone? Im looking to get a notification on my phone after i press the ikea button at my washing machine to remind myself to take out clothes

Question: I have two automations for each of three closet doors for a total of 6 automations. Each pair of automations checks a closet door contact sensor change status to either "Open" or "Close". If the contact sensor state changes to "Open", it will trigger the Lutron Caseta wireless light switch to turn the closet lights on. If the contact sensor changes to "Closed", it will trigger the Lutron Caseta Wireless light switch to turn the closet lights off. Is there a way in the "Convert to Shortcut" to combine these "sets" of automations so I end up with just three total automations (one for each closet door), instead of having a total of 6 automations? Or should I just leave it like it is?

Hey Frederick! From what you described the answer sounds like maybe. I checked the Home+ app and you can configure the trigger to be “when contact sensor changes state” as the initial trigger. You could then add the additional IF evaluation to see if the state is open or closed and then run the correct scene based on that secondary condition. It’s definitely more work but for me personally it’s helping to break down the automations to as little as a single automation per room with all the logic in one place. That makes it worth it to me. :)

I really like your videos, but lately the sound has been a bit harsh. This one sounded like you were down in a well with all of the echo and ringing. Content is fantastic, just need to work on the audio.

Ahhhh. Frederick.... I know. I know and it’s driving me bonkers. I tried a new microphone with this one (rode lav) in hopes of getting rid of the echo but it seemed to have gotten worse - not better. My son actually made the exact same comment. Unfortunate it sometimes comes down to a choice between releasing something off or not releasing anything. All I can say is that I’m really trying to get this solved and I really appreciate your feedback and your patience. :)
