My mother in law taught me how to make gravy using cornstarch. Much easier to use and smoother than flour and it makes a lovely translucent color. Now, I use cornstarch/liquid to thicken soups and sauces, too.
Excellent choices are Bratwurst, Polish Sausage, and Italian Sausage, all of which are often locally made and available in many neighborhoods of the city and suburbs.
