Thanks so much, Dr. Berry! I learned quite a bit - in particular I hadn't known about the Windows feature (Windows-Shift-S) to cut sections of the screen to the clipboard. I had been using Windows-PrintScreen, pasting the full window to a Word document, then using Word picture tools to crop and resize. Thanks for taking the time to do this video!

Yes, I think you will be fine with that setup. M.2 SSDs only get really hot if you are slamming them with lots of long sequential reads or writes (many GB at a time). You can use CrystalDiskInfo to check the temp of the SSD as you do different things.
Hi Doc. Thanks for making this video. I've seen several You-Tubers use CrystalDiskMark in their PC hardware videos, but I'm just learning the details of the program tonight for the first time. I noticed that when you ran the first test on your 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD you kept the settings at default (instead of switching them to NVMe SSD first). Why?
You can use Ctrl-S under the file menu to grab a screenshot of the window too. Ctrl-T gives you the same thing in text format. No need for Windows utilities etc. Helps a lot seeing my keyboard doesn't have a PrtSc key :(.
Clear a mud to me. Of course, I'm 79 and not a tech guy. I did download the zip and ran the options, but the numbers are Greek to me. I was hoping for something simple that told me either my drive was good and about how long it would last or go buy a new drive, stupid! Thanks for the video though maybe I will find a use for it later.
That is not really what CrystalDiskMark is designed for. It is a disk benchmark utility that lets you measure the performance of a drive in several different ways. This is useful for checking whether it is performing like it should for the type of drive that it is. For example, if someone installed an M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD in an M.2 slot that only had PCIe 3.0 support, the drive would still work, but it would be in PCIe 3.0 mode with only 1/2 the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 mode. They might not realize there was a problem without measuring the performance with a tool like this. I think what you are looking for is a disk management tool from whatever vendor made your drive to tell you what its health condition is. Samsung uses Samsung Magician for this, but every drive vendor has something similar.
Perhaps, but it was advertised in several different places as a way to determine if your drive is failing, close to failing, or how long the drive will last. This app is for IT pros and not us average users. The advertising was done in such a way as to make one think this app would be useful for the average user. Sort of clickbait.
@@thesilentgeneration Advertised by who? The same developer who wrote CrystalDiskMark also wrote CrystalDiskInfo, which is a little closer to what you seem to be asking for. I have a YT video that shows how to use that program. But as I said before, you need to look for a vendor-specific disk management utility (that is made by whatever company made your drive(s)) to get the more end-user friendly information that you seem to want. Nothing in my video title, thumbnail or description is "click-bait".

Respectfully: There are people who react to any sort of opposition to their own beliefs with hostility, rage, and often sarcasm. How much data is written to the drive in one test? I had 200 GB written to my SSD, and there is no warning anywhere about how much will be written, I find this annoying
I've never actually measured that. It would depend on how large the test file is and how many runs were done on each test. Only one part of the test should be generating a lot of sequential writes. In all the years I have used this tool, you are the first person that ever made that complaint. I'm not the author of the software, so you would get better results by giving your feedback to the actual software author.

Thanks for your reply. Do you have any idea how this can be fixed? I had tried to make it a bootable device - successfully - using rufus, then i booted it up (on the usb) and it wsa working fine. Then I benchmarked it using cdm and that is when it happened!
I have Microsoft Surface Book 2 - 15" with 1TB (2018) I ran the test on both : Regular - Read - 2600 Write - 1300 NVME - Read - 2600 Write - 1200 Does that mean my SSD is good or very Good ? Does it mean I have USB 4.0 port or how do I chk that ? Samsung T7 has speeds of 1000 I think Which other faster SSD should I look for ? Thank You
Having 2600 MBps sequential reads and 1200-1300 MBps sequential writes is pretty mediocre for a PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 drive. But unless you are moving or copying large files between two drives, you probably won't notice much difference in real life. The 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus is one of the best PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 drives. amzn.to/3IzWeIw

Every time I run to test the write & read, always stuck in 'create test file' (have waited for minutes) are there any more info should I share?
@@nightchrome1076 Unfortunately, your system is quite old (eleven years) and pretty slow by modern standards. Running this test on SD cards and USB thumb drives is going to take many, many minutes. You should try running it on your C: drive to see if that works and how long it takes.

Except for the 2tb m.2...I have exactly the setup and got almost the same results....so...my question becomes....given all this horsepower ...how fast can ms word go....gaming benchmarks don't tell me much...but the day to day stuff matters....how will spss or a 3 gb excel file go
A very fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is not going to "feel" that much faster than a slow 2.5" SATA SSD in most daily tasks. It is handy for copying large files and a few other things.
I uninstalled the CrystalDiskMark but I think that the test file still remains somewhere in C/ drive. Does anyone know how can I find it and delete it ?
If you ran the standalone executable, it will be in the root of the C: drive. If you ran a setup program to install it, it should be in a directory under Program Files.
As Glenn said, it's in the root of C. But it's a folder with a name, something like CrystalDiskMark0AAF56BE Inside this folder is a file, that looks something like CrystalDiskMark0AAF56BE.tmp I should have mentioned, that I only run the exe by itself. I never install. With this run, once the test is over or you press Stop, the file and folder are removed.
@@sulthanshadiqah9321 I've already answered this question. The test results in this test will often be lower on a laptop when the laptop is running on a battery instead of being plugged in. When I made this video, I was using a desktop machine, not a laptop.
