How to use different fans on your CPU cooler (all-in-one cooler compatibility)

In this video I want to talk about all-in-one CPU coolers and whether you can use fans of your own preference on them and how. What's the wiring logic when using Noctua fans on a Corsair all in one cooler? Or how do you connect up Lian Li fans on a NZXT Kraken Z73 cooler? Well, it is possible to do and the logic is fairly straight forward, so I'm going to show you how.
Sometimes you'll simply be connecting the fans from the radiator to a breakout cable on the pump head. Other times you might have to connect the fan power cables to the CPU Fan or CPU Opt connection on your motherboard. If they're not daisy chainable fans then you might need to use a y-splitter cable to do that.
If they're RGB cables you also need to consider the RGB connection. For Lian Li fans you'd connect them to the fan controller that you get in a triple pack, but for other fans you might connect to the 5V RGB header on your motherboard instead. For Corsair you could connect the RGB to an RGB node (or Lighting node) then connect that to your motherboard with a USB connection.
I'm showing the logic of each of these fan connections in this video to make your life a little easier. Hopefully it helps with the wiring logic. I'd also recommend that you watch these videos:

I am about to use phantek's recent D30s on a Corsair i150 elite XT (parts haven't arrived yet). I may have missed it in your video, but the corsair has a proprietary pump cable that goes into the commander core that it comes with right (or am I wrong)? So do I still need to connect the commander pro box in order to use the AIO or can I just ignore that plug and just plug the one cable into the AIO pump port on my motherboard and my D30s into the CPU fan header? TDLR, can I eliminate the need for the corsair commander core hub? I guess I do if I want to change the LCD screen image tho right? Thank you!

@achaz_

Hey I have a question ! It's not really related to the video but I wanted to know... I bought a 4090 aorus waterforce with the 360 aio and I want Corsair af120 rgb fans to replace the ones on the aio... The problem is that I don't have an adapter for the 3 pin gpu style to the classical 4 pin fan header so I wanted to know if it's possible to set fans speeds based on gpu temps in iCue and if I need a separated node core XT pr if I can set individual fan speeds based on cpu for some and gpu for other on the same node core... Sorry again for bothering it's just that I haven't seen the answer on the internet so I'm asking to the one I know that has all the answers !

Thank you for all the videos! I have the H150i LCD Elite XT AIO but opted to use Lian Li V2 fans throughout my build and I am a bit confused… I have the H150i single wire cable going to the mobo(Strix Z790A WiFi II) CPU Fan connector and the other 2 cables going to the H150i controller. I then have the 3 daisy chained Lian Li fans for the AIO going to the Lian Li V2 controller in 1 of the 4 slots and the other 3 slots are for the case fans. Is this the correct way to do it? Since the Lian Li controller is hooked up to the Mobo to a CHA Fan connector, does that mean the AIO fans function correctly since the AIO is hooked up to the CPU fan on the Mobo?

My question is slightly different, I'm getting a new rig that will have 10-fan setup. Corsair 5000T is the case, it comes with 3 pre-installed fans in the front and the commander core already in the case, I got another 3-pack of the LL120 from Corsair which comes with a lightning node pro and a 1pcs LL120 that I will install as case fans. My AiO is an NZXT ELITE 360 RGB which I will be placing at the top of the case. My doubt is: can I have the 7 LL120s connected to the Commander Core and Lightning Node Pro respectively while having the AiO connected to their own NZXT controller. If possible I would find a way to make them sync with eachother but if not possible I would put the lights on a static color or rainbow.

Hiya TPP! I am about to build a new system and I am really confused about fans. I am building a similar system to the one you made a video about (Lian Li O11D Evo XL). I have a bunch of TL120/TL140 fans and their reverse variants, but I am also using the Galahad II which comes with SL120 fans. Would you keep the SL120's on the rad, or swap them for TL120's? Is there much difference between TL and SL aesthetically? If I was to swap them, do I have a controller with no fans plugged in for the AIO, and plug the TL fans into the controller from the triple pack? If you or anyone else could give me some advice I would really appreciate it. Cheers!

I have the same Case, AIO and V2 uni fans in my build. I have the case fans connected to the Lian Li Hub controller and the radiator fans connected to the PWM connector coming from the NZXT Z73 like you shown in the video. The pump is connected to the CPU_Fan. At the moment I control my Pump and Radiator speeds with NZXT Cam and Case Fans with the L-Connect software. I was thinking to have less software running in the background, if I could instead, connect the radiator fans to the cpu_fan header in the MB and the Pump to the Pump header in the mb too. Get two additional cables from the single pack fans (4-PIN PWM and a 3-PIN SM-type ARGB cable) and connect the rest of the fans directly to the motherboard. This way, could I avoid using, L-Connect and Nzxt CAM and get everything controlled by the MB? I would like to hear your feedback!

great video, but how would you go about integrating the lian li uni fan sl-infinity 120. would you just run it into the lian li controller or would you split their custom connector and solder in a connector for the power and speed wires so the aio can still control it but then the rgb can control the lian li fans, so long as it doesnt freak out since it wouldn;'t be geting all the data since some wires would be missing

I'm having a strange problem. i just bought a new case, Lian Li 011 Air Mini. I'm using all the same hardware i was using before except now it seems like iCUE isn't controlling the fan speed on my AIO rad fans. I'm using ThermalTake Tough fans and have them connected to the pump head like I did in my last case, then I have the AIO sata power connector connected to a sata cable and I have the pump connected to a usb 2.0 header, just like in my last case. I have my fan speed in iCUE set to max for the fans and extreme for the pump yet it doesn't seem to be working. I have great idle temps at 38C but just a few mintues ago while running a video through handbrake my temps jumped to 92C which has never happened before. I've used 3 different brands of fans with this AIO and I've connected all of them to the fan cables on th AIO and iCUE controlled the speed so I don't know why it's acting up now.

Some AIOs (the EKWB Nucleus for example), have a box around where the hoses connect to the radiator. I assume this is to make the end of the radiator look flush with the fans. I've been wondering if this would cause problems with using Lian-Li fans if the contact points on their sides used for daisy chaining press up against it when installed.

The issue I’m running into with my SL INF 120 fans is that with the single pack splitter it has the 4-pin PWM and 3-pin ARGB connector that goes directly onto the motherboard not the controller so I can’t separate the AIO fans from the case fans.

The problem is if you buy the 3 pack of SL Inf 120, you only get the cables that allow you to connect to Hub, but with the single pack, the cable doesn't have a connection that allows you to connect to the HUB. It has the 4-pin PWM and 3-pin ARGB connector that goes directly onto the motherboard not the controller so I can’t separate the AIO fans from the case fans. You are left with a choice of running everything from the hub, which doens't allow the pump to control fan speed, or connecting power to the pump and then RGB to the board which L-connect then wont control with all the other fans. Any solution to this?
@andreamitchell4758

did you ever find a solution? I am building right now and using a deep cool lt720 with 3 lian li infinty 120's ,I bought the 3 pack and I don't have any single packs yet (waiting on 3 single infitny reverse fans for the front) My question is this, can I boot this system for the first time (with no errors or overheating) with the 3 infinty fans on my AIO since my only option is to use the L-connect controller since the fans don't include the break out cables with the PWM and ARGB as sperate connectors? I mean there is the optional cable that comes off the L-connect controller that has an ARGB and PWM connector (oddly each connector only has 2 wires, ARGB is usually 3 wires and PWM is usually 4 wires) so if I connect that PWM connector from the Lian li control box to the CPU fan header on my MB will it boot with no errors and will the fans spin or would I have to install Windows and L connect 3 first and configure L-connect to use the CPU header before the fans will spin and the MB willl not throw a no CPU fan error? Alternativly could I purchase a splitter cable that will allow me to connec the ARGB to the L connect controller and connec the PWM from my fas directly to the CPU header? since you have single packs though couldn't use one of the fan connector with separate ARGB nd PWM and plug the 3 ARGB connector form the fan cable into the L connec controller even though the male will hae 3 pins and the fea on the controller will have 7 or can you buy an adapter? or buy another L-connect controller and do what I said above and use the extra PWM connection from one controller that is only for the AIO and use the other controller for the other case fans?

hmm, that's a tough one as I'm not sure what the maximum power drawer would be from the breakout cable - whether it can handle 6 fans when it's only meant for three. I should also note that if you're doing push/pull you should really use the same fans on both sides as otherwise you've got different speeds, airflow capabilities, etc, and won't have the best performance. I don't think it's a probably necessarily, it's just not optimum.

I ran both AIOs with 6x Swiftech H320 Helix fans in push/pull, 6x Arctic P12 fans in push/pull, and 3x Phanteks T30 fans (push or pull, can't remember, same for both coolers) at different RPMs: 1000, 1400, 1800 plus 2200, 2600, and 3000 for the Phanteks. I repeated the tests, cooler mounting, and thermal paste application multiple times. Conclusions for the results are as follows: The Swiftech H320 is always 2-4 degrees cooler than the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 in every test when comparing same fans and same RPMs (all fan models, all RPMs). This is shocking because the Swiftech cooler has both less radiator fin density AND less radiator thickness. What makes the Swiftech win must be a combination of the Swiftech's cold plate, copper radiator (Arctic's is aluminum), and probably the biggest difference being Swiftech's pump which, unlike most AIOs with low-speed pumps in the 25-60 L/hr range, runs at around 600 L/hr (when set to it's max speed which I ran for the tests). Other things to note: - I re-mounted the Swiftech 3 times. I always got the same temps (fantastic consistency!). On the other hand, the first time I mounted the Arctic, I got temps that were 5 - 9 degrees C hotter than the Swiftech. Upon re-mounting the Arctic 2 more times, temps improved to 2-4 degrees hotter than the Swiftech for both the 2nd and 3rd mountings so it looks like that's the best I could get - CPU was an Intel i9-11900K overclocked and locked at 5.1 or 5.2 GHz (can't remember) all-core - stress tests were either 5 or 10 (can't remember) Cinebench R23 runs each - ambient temps were controlled and always within 0.6 degrees C for every test - each fan performed as expected with the Arctic P12 always performing cooler (at equal RPM) than the Swiftech Helix, and the Phanteks T30 always performing cooler (at equal RPM) than both other fans - cooling always improved with increased fan RPM with both AIOs, even with the Phanteks T30s all the way up to their maximum speed of 3000 RPM (surprised) - thermal paste used is SYY-157 (one of the best pastes, 95-99 % the performance of Thermalright TFX)

Am I able to pick your Brains or even your community before I ask my question though love your content and your videos are always very well done so here goes sorry for the long read. I have a Deepcool mystique 360mm aio and am wanting to swap out the fans that came with it once be quite light wings which have ARGB just so I can get the extra fps that it gives lol 😂 so from what I can tell by there data sheet they are 0.45A each three of them would be 1.35A and from what I believe the Tuf Gaming X670e plus WiFi board I got only has a rated 1A would I be able to use a splitter and still be able to use the CPU header or would I need to use some sort of sata powered hub and then plug that into the CPU header it’s the only thing I would be using the hub for thank you Steve

You could but I'd say use the controller to power them as six would be too much for the CPU fan header
