Samsung's main camera app is flexible and versatile. But it's not where you can take the best photos. In this video I explain what the ExpertRAW app is all about and showcase why you should use this instead of normal photo mode.

In my opinion the biggest misconception about smartphone cameras are their ability. Even with large numbers getting thrown around. The Samsung when you think about is giving you the same resolution. Only unprocessed or straight out of camera. 12.5mb in terms of image real estate. Even 1 inch sensors seem to be fixed to around 20 megapixel or around 12.5 megapixel in some Chinese phones. From a simplistic point of view this does really replace the need for chunkier compact cameras. Anyway a new update this is supposed have large size raw files coming on the s24ultra. I mean time will tell whether the lack of processing will photos more tweakable.

If you want real raw files you have to use Pro mode, but it can't do hdr or bracketing. Or. You can sell and buy a better phone. For real. Samsung is way behind it's competitors in mobil photography.

I think the multiple exposure setting is a bit misleading. It allows you stack frames using the multiple exposures and flatten them down into one final image. I would have preferred focus stacking where you can combine a range of focal lengths in the one image.

Lightroom for desktop is quite good, however if you are happy leaving them on your phone, use Samsung DeX and use Lightroom for Mobile. That will let you edit on a monitor but also keep them stored on your S23!

I don't see how giving us a shortcut that cannot be brought out of the "more" section really helps much. I have a shortcut to Expert RAW on my desktop next to my Camera shortcut. If I open one right after the other, it is faster to move between them by quickly tapping on the Task button twice than it is to move to the More button and find the RAW option.
@techwithbenefits
@techwithbenefits Год назад
Yeah, I mostly agree. They should allow us to move it down to the bottom tabs.
@neilmackey9626
@neilmackey9626 9 месяцев назад
I think in the S23, it now has the option to drag Expert RAW down onto the bottom row for camera modes, as opposed to having to dig it out of "More". This sounds like more of a software thing and here's hoping that in a future UI, that option gets brought to earlier S-line cameras. That in and of itself isn't quite enough motivation for me to trade "up" to an S23 from my current S22 Ultra...

What can editing RAW mode due for rank beginners who do not want to dedicate tens of hours or more to learning editing techniques and software menus? With zero knowledge, I imagine RAW allows detailed manipulation of pixel brightness conversion. For example, instead of just choosing a gamma (which is a parameter for a single formula-driven curve) you can manually adjust various points and sections of the conversion curve to get desired results. Does that desired feature exist? Regardless, what can RAW editing do?
@joeshmoe7967
@joeshmoe7967 5 месяцев назад
#1 RAW allows changing the White Balance mode after the shot. Example camera was set to shoot under tungsten, then used outdoors. The color balance will be terrible. RAW allows changing that to 'Outdoors'. #2 Is altering the over all exposure, because there is more data. With a jpeg everything is baked in, and only basic 'curves' adjustments are possible. #3 Highlight or shadows or both 'recovery'. Bringing out details in the over exposed/under exposed areas of the picture. There ARE limitations, but way more options compared to a jpeg. #4 Varying the amount of Sharpening. #5 The ability to go back and re-process a picture for a different look. Nothing is baked into the saved RAW. When you think you are happy you save a totally editable RAW for future use, then export a jpeg version to display. You would NOT use RAW for every single image, just ones that are 'special' to you. I just got my S23 and I am very impressed just shooting in standard 'Photo' mode. The fact that I can get creative in other ways from a Phone Camera is a bonus. The camera is very good. I shoot with a DSLR, mostly birds/wildlife. I shoot 100% in RAW, but only 'process' the really good shots. Sometimes the image is good enough as is, those can be simply exported as jpeg. I don't need to spend hours editing every little detail on all my photos, but RAW gives me options. You may learn a new processing technique, and RAW lets you go back and 're-bake the cake'

I use the S23 Ultra in Expert RAW mode. I recently took some photos of my 2 year old grandson. I asked him to look at the phone, so I could take a photo. He looked at the phone, but turned away immediately. However, I took the shot in time. My daughter jokingly said; "You have to be quick". I proudly showed her the photo, with him looking directly at the camera. As we both looked at the photo, it became "optimised" but also his head turned, so no longer looking at the camera. I looked in the gallery, but the original photo is not there. I have OneUI 6.0 loaded and optimisation turned on plus the quality set so that it is maximised rather than speed. Is this quality setting the cause of the change to the photo taken, or should I turn optimisation off? Is ProRAW going to prevent this problem?
@novakane8722
@novakane8722 7 месяцев назад
Don't take it in raw. The hole point is it captures more light so it takes longer
@brucewarren9563
@brucewarren9563 7 месяцев назад
Thanks@@novakane8722. I had a think on this problem and came to the conclusion that if I used 12M rather than 50M, in RAW mode, I may avoid the problem. I have done some very crude tests, which so far seems to confirm my theory. I did change the setting I mentioned, prioritising speed, but that did not solve the problem in 50M mode. I suspect it does nothing in 12M mode.
@Dicktopus
@Dicktopus 3 месяца назад
@@novakane8722 don't bs pls. The answer is that the shutter speed is so low and it's stacking images. This is a damsung feature long ago. You have to turn shutter speed manually around 1/180 for moving objects like children. Mind that it needs qood light conditions.
@okeyezeilo6187
@okeyezeilo6187 Месяц назад
When you press the shutter in Expert Raw, it takes a sequence of images and then stacks them to generate the final image. I believe while you were watching, it melded a later image in the sequence into an earlier one...

@@okeyezeilo6187 Thanks. Yes, I believe you are correct. I only use the RAW mode now if there is no chance of movement while taking the photo. So, not used very often. I turned RAW + JPG on, but the JPG has the same problem.
