To say my backyard is compacted is an understatement. It is more like a concrete pad with a bit of grass sprinkled in it. When I went to get soil samples, it was like chipping away at a granite rock! So, it got me thinking about one of the "Compaction Cure" that we recommend to home owners and how it will fix the problem I have with the back yard. So that is what we will discuss and tackle in this video, how to use the N-Ext Compaction cure using RGS and Air8.

I tried this. I purchased 2.5 gallon sized of both products and used it on my hard Georgia clay and it did absolutely nothing for my compaction. Not even the slightest difference. I really wanted it to work. I love and still use most n-ext products, but from my experience, air-8 is complete junk.

Put down the compaction cure in my front yard (5000 square feet)yesterday. You have some real world compaction issues in your backyard Castleberry. I am looking forward to see how things progress. Keep the vids coming! I used the compaction cure over my whole yard last year (15000 sq feet) at a full rate early spring and fall and a low rate of air 8 and rgs in the late spring. I saw a definite difference. The yard was soft and green in the typically most compacted areas. I am a believer in the N Ext products!! Thank you for the great info!!

Just seeing your compaction video now, July 1 2019 ... I'm in northern Louisiana dealing with centipede sod poorly laid last fall onto hard red clay. I just got N-Ext RGS and Air8 today. Seeing your 5-week intervals .... Would you recommend therefore I put these two applications down once every 5 weeks for a total of three times this year? That would mean me starting now July 1, then another around Aug. 8, then the final one in mid September. Or is September too late in the year? Thanks!

@milanjurich1526

Couple questions: Can this be done after mowing or should you wait a couple days after mowing? Can microgreene and/or humic 12 be added to the mix? How long after would I be able to put down another application of hydretain?
@NExtDIYLawn
@NExtDIYLawn 2 года назад
You can do it after mowing since this is a mix for the soil. You can add other products to the mix. Depending how you're applying it, microgreene may need to be applied separately. You can do the compaction cure monthly.

@NExtDIYLawn
@NExtDIYLawn 5 лет назад
Great question. There is a bit of humic acid in all of our products. RGS has 6% humic acid and Air8 has 8%. Humic Acid helps amend soil to create a healthy environment for turf and plants. It will help in utilizing both macro and micro nutrients. - Castleberry

Don’t have a compaction issue but I just bought RGS and Air8 with the hope that the Air8 will eliminate core aerating while overseeing each fall. Keep up the good vids.
@NExtDIYLawn

If you are using the Air8 and RGS, I would put the Air8 down first, seed, then spray your RGS over the seed. Some sort of covering, whether it be pete moss or something else, is not a bad idea. As for poking holes in the yard and seeding, what happens to the seed in between the holes you poked? Do they not germinate? You are most welcome. Happy to help anyway I can. Do you have an update? Not a big fan of stuff I can concoct on my own for far less $. IMO the #1 ingredient is fulvic acid . If you can find actual fulvic it is much better than just humic which contains a % of fulvic. Adding a topdress of leaf compost and monthly applications of fulvic and kelp I turned a highly compacted area into a place that now has earthworm activity. IMO it takes 3-5 years to really see a difference and compost top dressing is critical I have also found out adding a good worm castings is amazing. I started throwing spent coffee grinds out as well. Coffee grinds have small amount of NPK and worms seem to love them. Miramichi Green uses grinds in their high end carbon amendment. It’s amazing to watch the soil aggregate. It’s still not perfect but the improvement is awesome

Hi Paul ... I get it 18 oz/2000 sf and 12 oz/2000 sf. So folks don’t overlook it, it’s 9 oz/1000 sf and 6 oz/1000 sf as most rates are per 1000 sf. Will you be applying just Air8 prior to seeding in the fall or mechanically aerate?
@full_metal2452

LaRueOBR 5.56 his ortho puts out close to 2 gal/min of water and his dial is set to his pace of walking and dictates how much product is being pulled into the water stream. Higher dial ... emptying faster. All Paul is doing is filling the container with the amount of Air8 and RGS to cover 2000 sf and then just spraying that 2000 sf area til it’s gone. It’s like saying 18 oz per 2000 sf = 9 oz per 1000 sf (bottle rate) x 2 since he has double the area to cover. I don’t know if excess Air8 would hurt anything if someone doubled up to 18 oz./1000 sf.

Great question. Thanks for asking and watching the video. The answer would depend on which products you are mixing together, but general rule is you want to make sure you have a minimum of 7:1(product to water) ratio. Meaning for every 1 ounce of product, you need 7 ounces of water.

What if you were to apply this more often? My situation right now is very different than yours, in that your backyard is hard as a rock, whereas mine is so wet from all the rain. If I applied every 2 weeks, as opposed to waiting a month, would I just be wasting it, or would it get better results? I really want to get that potassium in there and really want to get some air flow to help with the water, considering my grass is so thick and when it holds onto all the water, I start seeing fungus issues happening.. I really think this would help prevent fungus if I can get that additional air flow, so can I really push it..?
@NExtDIYLawn
@NExtDIYLawn 5 лет назад
Great question and thanks for asking. I am not a fan of pushing turf. I would rather let it cycle through the goodies we give it. I would stick to doing this application every 4 weeks. I would not do less than that. You want the roots to drive deeper so they can learn to search for nutrients. If you hit them more often, those roots will get trained to stay near the surface because they know thats where they can find the nutrients. - Castleberry
@brianschmitz6188

I just ordered the compaction cure set. I am on my second attempt to grow grass on a lawn with hard clay soil. If I use these products regularly will I still have to amend the soil with compost or other matter? Once the soil is loosened up what is the maintenance schedule? Also can I put some additional grass seed down just before I use these products? Thank you!
@NExtDIYLawn
@NExtDIYLawn 5 лет назад
Great question. If the area you are treating is as bad as mine, it will take more than this season to correct it. Especially in the bare spots. There needs to be roots in the game to really make a difference. I plan on overseeding back there this fall. Once you have the soil where it needs to be, I would just do 3 oz of each with the other products in the bio stim pack once a month. That would be the maintenance schedule. You can absolutely put seed down. I would do Air8, seed, then RGS. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. - Castleberry

@@NExtDIYLawn I do have one more question! Using Air8 puts tiny fissures in the soil to allow air and water to the roots. If you use a backpack sprayer and you say a 5 to 1 dilution. And you have 15 oz of RGS and Air8 in the sprayer you're adding 75 oz of water per 1000 Square feet, correct? @NExtDIYLawn

With a backpack sprayer it's more important to water in the application. So the dilution is hard to get using the backpack. Watering in afterwards makes up that difference.

That's a great question. You don't want to apply if temps are at 85 or higher. You would see some tissue damage immediately if you do. Still pretty compacted and will be until I can get some root mass in the game. Places where there is turf have softened up nicely but the bare areas are still pretty rock hard. If you are trying to fix bare spots with the compaction cure, it will take a much longer time than areas that have turf. Reason being, root mass. Roots will hold on to the goodies you are giving it, which will help fix compaction issues. So, still working on it, but a major overhaul will be taking place this fall! The thing that scares me about naming products things like Air8 is that people will think they don't have to actually aerate their lawns. These ingredients have been around a long time, and people have been using them a long time. They are effective but they don't replace mechanical aeration. If they claim it does, well, they're being dishonest and misleading people. I'd hope they're not claiming it does, but naming it Air8 doesn't sit well.
