I’ve been a road driver for 38 years in a big truck . Retired now when I saw this on my new truck I am excited.Don’t ever let anyone intimidate you and say backing a trailer is easy and “Why are you getting out of the truck to make sure your not gonna hit anything”Take your time,It’s ok to pull up and try again, just stay safe. This system I think will help a lot but still learn to use your mirrors while using the system. Systems break down and you wanna still be able to back your trailer. I’ve seen guys that have been driving forever tear doors off their trailers. I’ve made some dumb mistakes too. Tired one time I tried to get out of a guys way and backed right into a field of mud. I had to call a wrecker get me out.lol. Have fun guys and don’t be scared to ask someone to spot for you or just ask a question. We all were new to backing a trailer at one time.

I have had 2 pop up campers and just bought a 38 foot travel trailer. I really hate backing. My son-in-law and a buddy of mine tell me all the time, "You just have to figure it out". They won't take the time to show me what I'm doing wrong. It's not a really intuitive thing to do. To me it's like teaching a kid to ride a bike. You don't just tell them to figure it out, or ride the bike for them. I just watched a few RU-vid videos lately and I'm much better at it. I was able to back 8 foot wide my travel trailer into a 12 foot wide spot at the storage lot in just a few tries and didn't hit anything. My wife was impressed. My truck has backup assist, but not the Pro version with the little wheel. The camera uses stickers on the trailer a-frame to calculate the turning. I didn't set the system up yet and just winged it.

For all the people bashing this system...try memorizing all the phone numbers in your phone contacts. Then delete your phone contacts and dial manually each phone number each time you want to call someone. I dont care how good your memory is, and how fast your fingers are, that will get old fast. Leave your pride out the window and accept change for efficiency. Work smarter not harder. Dont be the cowboy that rode his horse and refused to drive a car. If everyone thought like all you haters, we would all still be using rotary phones. Some of you dont even know whay a rotary phone is. Its the future boys...

It takes a little time getting accustomed to driving by the dash-mounted knob and camera, but once you get the hang of it, it's impressive--especially for straight backing. The spring-loaded knob defaults to 0 degrees so you can back-up straight without touching the knob or steering wheel.

I have a new 2021 F-150 XLT with this option and no one at the dealership in suburban Detroit can get it to work. It actually is so screwed up that I can't even tow my boat now without getting electrical fault messages constantly while towing. The dealer has replaced the APIM Module in the vehicle twice now and says that they need to call in a Ford engineer to look at the trailer and truck together. Oh yes, I only have 500 miles on the truck so I'm pretty sick about this. I wish Don Mattern could look at my truck and get me back on the road towing again!

This needs to be more computed. You map out the area where exactly the trailer goes and how much of an angle it has and u don’t have to control anything the truck just does it. When the back of the trailer is about to hit something the truck will stop. I think it would be cool if the truck could do this so u can get out of the truck and watch it

I noticed that the demonstrator was able to toggle between the cameras included with the Pro Trailer Back UP Assist system and the auxiliary Rear Trailer mounted camera. I just bought my F350 SD with this system and had my Ford dealer install the rear mounted trailer cam. They configured it so that I have to get out of the vehicle and unplug the Pro Trailer harness and plug in the rear trailer camera harness to use it. They must have installed it incorrectly, but there is only one port in the bed (the other one is for the trailer). Anyone have experience with this?

I've never heard someone explain it that way and it could confuse people. When you say turn left you mean to turn the wheel clockwise to make the trailer go left, which is actually turning the wheel as if you were turning right. Just tell people to turn the wheel in the opposite direction that you want the trailer to go. Better yet, let people use this system without commenting about how it's unnecessary. Some people struggle with packing up a vehicle without a trailer. It's okay to use technology. you'll still be just as much of a man.

Yeah, Lariat is NOT what it used to be. Lariat is now just middle grade. Lariat is now what the XLT used to be, basically you get leather seats and that's it. They did this because of the massive price increases from the last few years. You think, oh, well it's expensive but I am getting a Lariat but you don't stop to think that the $72,000 you paid is on the LOW side and, really, you've got to pay $82,000 these days to get all the features you used to get from a Lariat. Cool and all I guess... my debate would be if you are towing a trailer you need to learn how to back it up manually.. it's really not that hard. Find an empty lot, bring some cones and go to town. I do like the camera option at the back of the trailer if alone when backing up.. large RV trailers and car trailers ect it would help to ensure you do not bump into anything. Just gotta remember, turning the wheel left makes the trailer go right, and the other way around. lol.

When I am ready, I am most definitely going to get a Ford F-350 super duty. Thank you Ford for putting this function on your trucks, you have me as a 100% loyal customer😎👍

That’s kind of like calling cruise control a dumb idea because you can just use the pedals. It’s more of a convenience factor. Anyone who uses this tech without first learning how to backup a trailer will find themselves very frustrated when the system kinks. It will first sound an alarm and tells you to take over and then it disables itself. You have to re-engage the system, which takes about 20-30 seconds. Then whatever causes it to kink again (sun glare or other camera obstruction to the sticker) will stop the system again. Everyone around you will be wondering why you keep stopping in the middle of a backup. After that experience at a boat launch, I gave up on it and learned how to do it manually.

Or you could just learn how to back a trailer. It's not that hard. Just takes a little practice, y'know, like learning how to drive except in reverse. Personally, I don't want any system to ever have the ability to take control of my wheel. No "trailer assist" or "parallel park" thingy or whatever else you white collar executives think we want. Things break. What happens if there's a short and this system decides to take control of my wheel at the wrong time? Or it doesn't release control when I'm done using it? Or the damn thing just breaks and I'm screwed because I never put even the tiniest bit of effort into learning how to back a trailer manually? You're over-complicating things, Ford. You're putting too much effort into marketing your trucks to the weekend warrior who wants a pavement princess. Guys like me who use our trucks daily _as a truck_ and not a grocery getter don't need or want all of this useless electronic garbage. It's stuff like this that's the reason why all of my trucks are 20+ years old. No thanks, I'll pass. P.S. Please bring back manual crank windows and vinyl floors. It's a truck, not a Lincoln. P.P.S. And mechanical turn signals. Worked fine for decades. I shouldn't have to check the owners manual to figure out how to signal. If it ain't broke...

If you’re a marginally decent driver, you can spend 10-15 minutes behind the wheel practicing trailer backing and you will be more than capable of getting any trailer where you need it. This device is counter intuitive for the experienced driver. Instead of looking out the mirror and or over your shoulder you are now staring at a tv screen, checking the mirror and turning a tiny knob while the big wheel spins about like it’s possessed. This makes no sense. I’ve attempted to used this device and I just laughed because it was so much easier to just look out the mirror and use the steering wheel. Granted I have done it old school for 40 years. If you don’t know how to back a trailer “old school” and you don’t learn you’re stuck with this device. If you have the ability to back a trailer this device is useless. Yet another knob on the dash you paid extra for that will never be used. I call this marketing of the ultimate Rube Goldberg device.

If you can't backup a trailer without using the Knob, then you should not be backing anything up. The knob is the most useless thing Ford ever invented.
