Anson, you have a lot of really good questions that need answers ! I found when I tried to link my first google voice to my home phone which was an Ooma Voip system, that it wouldn't let me. I never got the "claim" option and I didn't know I wasn't set up. I ended up linking to cell phone which WORKED and THEN I could link to my Ooma phone at home.

Thanks Anson! I suggest looking closely at legacy Google voice. There are some filtering, voice mail features worth checking out. I didn't realize my pop-up blocker was stopping me from in gv. I was just going to the hang outs dialer to make calls from the web / tablet. Thanks again!

Yes, the "Legacy Google Voice" seems to give more options for custom settings, particularly for setting up voicemail answering messages unique to each person calling you on your Google Voice number. (I have different messages for several of my contacts, saying, "Hi, Brother number 1, (or Brother number 2, or Friend 1, or Friend 2, and so on). I can't pick up now, but I'll call you when I can" and so on.) I'm not sure if this is available in the new GV settings.

I had Google Voice years ago and it was great but semi-limited when it came to doing the same things as regular text messaging. I see that it's been updated to send images - yay! Do you know if in the messaging function you can schedule texts? I'm also looking to be able to send to a group but have it viewed by the recipient as an individual text? I run my own business and looking to streamline my reminder texts that go to a small group of people.

Thank you for excellent information. I’ve had google voice for almost 10yrs and it’s changed over time. Nowadays I am having a hard time setting up my phone to ring when I get a call they my gv number, it automatically goes to my vm. I use this for work and my vm is set up w message but I would also like to be able to answer calls when they come under the google voice#. Any chance you can tell me how to set that up? Thank You!

Hello, thanks for making the video I have been messing around with this for some time and I haven't been able to get it to work the way I want maybe you can help. I have Iphone that has the google voice app on it. My issue is, when i call my google voice number it rings on my phone as it should, but if i go into the missed calls and click on it to call that number back, the person on the other phone will see my personal number not my google voice number. Is there a way to setup the google voice so any call, voicemails, texts to stay within the google voice app and not get mixed up with my personal phone? Thanks, Mark

Down load the hangouts dialer, set it up and sign in with your GV UN and PW. Call back from there look for a tutorial for hangouts dialer.. you'll love it..

how do I search my GVoice history for particular phone numbers? the instructions on GV help do not work. GV recommends using format style 555-555-5555 (does not work). I am using GV legacy.

Yeah, man great video! I have a question, though... Do you have to pay to listen to voicemails or text messages when you are traveling? Also, do you know if having a number of messages uses up the alotted memory across all the google services?

I'm glad you found it helpful! You do not have to pay to listen to voicemails or messages. You do need to be connected to the internet so that can either be wifi or a cellular data network. The only payment you would need to make would be the payment to get internet. I hope that helps!

Hi, thanks for this tutorial! I am a virtual assistant and I'm offering virtual reception services. I am wondering if I have multiple clients that need their phone calls managed, can Google Voice handle this kind of scenario? How would the set up work? Do all my clients need to have a Google Voice account and forward their calls to my number? Also, when someone is calling on client A's phone, will I know through Google Voice? Basically, I want to find a way in which I can divert my client's calls to my number. Thanks in advance!

Hi Anson. Great video; thank you! I would VERY much like an Android tutorial. I'm stuck with knowing if I set up an account on my laptop, how do I use my cell to make calls from the Voice number? Do I just download the app, and it automatically knows I already have a Google Voice? Or when someone calls my Voice number, does my phone identify it somehow as that number instead of my normal cell number?

Unless something has changed that was the ultimate issue with this app. There is no way to identify where the incoming call is coming from. I Love all things GOOGLE but they have missed the boat here and do not much seem to care. GODADDY.com has what you Need!

thanks for your great tutorial. Where is the "setting" button on the new google voice version? it is not showing. Also when you call from your smart phone and do not want to use data or voice minutes on a wifi setting, airplane mode supposed to be on or off? when the airplane mode is on, i do not hear the phone ringing. how do i resolve that?

Hello Anson, thx for the video. Out of nowhere , when i launch GV, i have three columns instead of 2. the first two columns are normal. the third column , or far right column, shows a keypad as if to make a call. You can hide the keypad and then it gives you suggestions of who to call i assume based on history. How do i get rid of the third column?

Within the past week my Google Voice there is a field on the right side of the page showing the number to call with, a field to enter a number or list of suggestions. It also can switch to a keypad. Think add this accidentally as left column in you video has everything I need. Have you seen this before, if so how do I get rid of the field?

How do you turn off the ability to receive calls? I saw a tutorial where it was explained that you can disable "incoming calls," and only use Google Voice for outgoing calls. This would be helpful, as I plan to try using Google Voice in my voiceover studio so that I can do a 2-way with clients who direct me via phone.

In the GV legacy it was possible to delete old texts. Now they go forever ! How are unwanted texts deleted in the new GV ?

You can choose a phone number from anywhere in the US, not just local to you. The cities that pop up when you get to the part to choose a number are based on your IP address, but if you type in an area code in the box, you will get cities within that area code instead.

Hello. In the past version of GV I could call my GV # from my GV# and I would enter a pin to retrieve my messages. I can't find how to set that up. Please explain where to go and set that up.

Go to "Legacy Google Voice," then go to "Settings" icon (upper right corner of screen), then select the "Voicemail and Text" tab. There are several options there you can set up, including one to set up your Voicemail Pin.

I think that just has to do with numbers that are available. I set up my Google Voice number several years ago, and I searched for numbers putting in my name. I was able to get a number that spells out my abbreviated first name and my last name.

Good video. You said we can't have two GV numbers ring on one phone number, so when GV site has a place to Add Another Number is it asking to enter an additional phone number from an additional phone, both of which will ring on the one GV number? I have 2 GV phone numbers, but one says "Out of service" when I call it. That out of service #, tho, appears in my settings with options to cancel, transfer, make priority, etc. Do you know what's going on with that? I couldn't get GV "support" to offer solutions. Yes it is the same as I said in the video, you can have one GV number ring as many phones as you'd like but you cannot have multiple GV numbers ring the same device. That's why yours says out of service. Make that one priority (then wait maybe 24 hours) and it should replace the other one as the active GV number for that device.

Can you still eliminate your landline but retain (port) your old number using Google Voice. What is replacing the OB200 I heard there are now issues with the new Google Voice connected thru the OB series because of a buyout. I just want to use my home phone number with my home phone equipment thru Google Voice.

Herbert Newman u don’t need a landline u only need a computer and internet or a cell phone and wi fi. And if u want to retain your landline number you would need to make sure it is available and not currently still in use or “ported” with your landline service provider like at&t etc. whoever your number is ported with is where that number stays until you port it with another provider.

You can't port your land line directly to Google Voice, but you can port your landline to a cell phone and then port it from the cell phone to Google Voice. I just did this in the last couple of weeks. There are videos on RU-vid giving instructions on how to it. I found an old iPhone in my desk that hadn't used in years. I had it unlocked, (as it was paid off in full, and I'm now on a newer iPhone). I got a prepaid T-Mobile sim with 30 days's service and inserted it in the old iPhone. I had T-Mobile activate it. (I think you can do this with any prepaid sim from any provider, but nearly all the instructions I have found refer to T-Mobile.) Once I was sure I could send and receive calls and texts to the phone with the new sim card (and new mobile number), I called T-Mobile and asked them to port my landline to the new prepaid mobile account. This took a few days, (two or three, but it can take up to five days). Once my prepaid mobile number showed my landline as the number (replacing the one T-Mobile had give me), I then went on Google Voice and went through the steps to have my new prepaid mobile number--my old landline--ported to Google Voice. It costs $20 to port it over, and 24 hours. Sure enough, my old land line is now my Google Voice number. (My second; I already had another Google Voice number. I bought the Obi 212, (now owned and rebranded by Polycom), and set it up so my new Google Voice (old landline) number rings my landline, which is connected to the Obi device. However, I no longer have to pay for the landline number. As I say, I have done all this in the last month, and it works like a charm.

I know that Google Voice works in Brazil and Europe because I have used it in those countries, although the app was originally downloaded in the united states. If you're using Android you should be able to find it in the Google Play store - it is a Google product after all. Hope that helps!

So all im trying to do is make my Samsung android phone say whos texting me so I don't have to look at my phone. My htc phone had that built in. Lots of apps with a whole lot going on I don't want. I was going to use Who's Calling app but it no longer supports sms due to Google voice telling them no. But omg google voice seems so involved for just voice notifications. I really need your help and hoping you can. Long story short my boss set up an account back in 2014 and we use this as our 24/7 emergencyline. Well we were unable to gain access to the old account so I suggested that I create a new one so he is not receiving the messages on his phone but is receiving the calls the messages are being left on the app which he needs these did be transferred to his personal phone in a text message. Also the business greeting that I have recorded is now on his personal cell phone please help is there a way that I can get this set up where he received these calls via text message? If not is there a way to retrieve our old number and just go back to the way it was?

Hi Anson. I'm an American, currently living in Spain through 2020. I have an American address, and still have a home in the US. I plan to return to the US next year. I have a dual sim iPhone, and have had problems with the pricey travel pass feature offered through Verizon prepaid, as I get charged for the service when I don't want to use it. Your tutorial discusses call forwarding, but I'm unclear how to set up google voice for iPhone so that I get rid of my Verizon service and keep my existing phone number. I'm also curious if I can set everything up from here in Spain.

I got a issue. My Googlevoice is hooked up to my iPhone, but for some reason, when somebody call and I ignore the call. It goes to my personal voicemail 🤷‍♂️

@@cmlharper Your various phones are set to go to voicemail after a certain number of rings. The number that answers after the fewest number of rings will be the one the voice mail will go to. If you can change how many times each number will ring before going to voicemail, you should adjust them so the Google Voice number answers after the fewest number of rings.

I'm left with most of the questions I already had, like what happens when you make a call, what happens when a call comes in on my regular phone, can my regular phone be used as a google voice interface, what good is google voice.... It would have been nice to see a demo.

@@techmelissa I've found it pretty good for dialing in to very long conference calls too, since I don't have to use my phone. And my IP headset lets me walk around the house or yard and it's still clear.

can you please make a video showing how to make and receive calls useing the app on a phone that does not have service if you have a existing google number?
