Great videos. The correct pronunciation of the word 'Foliage' is FO....LEE....AGE...not FOI...LAGE. the 'I' comes after the 'L'..not before. From one teacher to another. Keep up the good work.

One big thing..you didn't say anything about switching out different pencils, I barely noticed you doing that. I am a newbie so I freaked out 🤪 this is 1st time to even buy them.
@AlexisCassandraArt

You’re right ahh! I forget when I’m doing it. When you want more details, switch to harder pencils like B or HB or even H, when you want to shade mid tones use 2B-4B, you can use 8B or 9B (if they have it) for the darkest shadows! Hope that helps but I may make a video regarding this issue too

should i start practicing with regular pencils first or directly start with shading pencils ?
@AlexisCassandraArt
@AlexisCassandraArt 3 года назад
I would say practice with whatever you have! If you just have a normal yellow pencil (or mechanical) those are actually HB pencils. You can definitely practice with those. When you use pencils from a set like B, 2B, 4B, 8B, etc., you can get darker values and softer shading, or with H pencils extremely fine lines. But the HB pencil is basically inbetween the hard H pencil and the soft B pencil, its like a combination of both and will still work for shading but you won't get as dark results.

@@AlexisCassandraArt I mean even if I do use the shading pencils, how do I know which one I should use and where I should use it ?

To be specific, beginners simply don't need expensive or heavyweight paper to draw anything. Graphite sticks to graphite, and if even 80 gsm paper won't handle all the layers you need, then you're using way too much pressure when applying the layers. Just about any sketchbook has paper suited to anything in this video. Whether it's a Strathmore 80 gsm sketchbook, or Strathmore 100 gsm drawing paper, it's more than heavy enough. That's why they put such paper in the sketchbooks. Of course, Walmart's Pen Gear Sketchbooks or HP Premium 32 pound, acid and lignin free paper is extremely cheap, and even heavier than Strathmore sketchbook paper or drawing paper. As for tooth, that's a personal choice, but I know far more pro graphite artists who use the smoothest paper they can find than ones who want tooth. Strathmore Bristol Smooth is far more popular than Strathmore Bristol Vellum. As for the drops of water, I don't think that's a very good technique for making them look three dimensional. It can be used on tiny drops of water, but it just doesn't work well with large drops where there's room to do proper shading. If you look at a real drop of water on a flat surface, you should see a direction where the light source comes in, and unless that direction is always straight from above, you should also see three distinct shadows shadows, two on the side asway from the light, and one on the side of the light. A water drop has a shadow that corresponds with the level of the light source, and the height of the water drop, just as a solid sphere, cube, etc. does. It also has a shadow created by the transparency of the water, and a shadow on the light side created by the line of water where it meets the surface it's on. From the location of your highlight, the shadow on the non-light side should be much larger and more out away from the water drop, just as it would with a slid object. There should also be a separation of these two shadows, but that has to be seen. You can also add more of a 3-D effect by curving the highlight, just as you do inside an eye, and by making it much whiter. Normally, the entire surface of the drop, other than the highlight, should have some degree of shading, just as a solid sphere does. The difference is that the highlight on the water drop needs to have more pop that the highlight on a solid sphere. Otherwise, there isn't enough contrast to make the drop seem round, deep, and transparent. But it's the large shadow equivalent to the size of the drop, the proper shading on the drop, and the curve, the brightness, and the sharp edges of the highlight that make it look three dimensional. Maybe a better way to put it is that these things make it look ROUND. You get some 3-D, but they all look flat on top, like a transparent pancake.

Hello, thanks for your comment! I actually had this and my other graphite video disabled for a bit because I feel like they are outdated. I really need to make an updated version sometime soon, but my channel also hasn't gone too far in the direction of graphite anymore. Maybe a better water drop study included!

Sad to see that your poor little bird only has two front 'toes' on its left 'foot'. Maybe its mom married a woodpecker. Still love your videos.
