U sir are the genuine article and a REAL guitar professional. I've been running the circle of 5th's lately and stumbled on to this accidently playing by ear. In 5 minutes U've solved and shown me the proper technique on those hammerons. The angle and touch makes the strings sing! if attacked aggressively it just sounds awful. Thanks a million!

I like your instruction; it's very thorough. As I watch you bending your wrist (see 2:47), however, I can't help think that is inappropriate posture to play safely without injury. Is there a way to do these licks without bending your wrist. This is something I've been dealing with as I learn the nuances of playing fingerstyle with rest strokes in a flamenco context. I want to learn these blues licks, but I find myself unable to bend my wrist while playing. It makes my left hand grip feel compromised / weak. Another issue for me (in spite of having larger hands) is effectively using the thumb on the 6th string (see video) while forming chords. Might this be due to guitar neck dimensions? Anyway, thanks for any response you may have. - J
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
Hi Judd! I wouldn't worry about not wrapping your thumb around the neck to get the chords. With rock guitar, there's always more than one "right" way to do things :-) But yes, neck width and taper does matter. I find this technique is easier on guitars with a 1 5/8 nut width for me.

What's wrong with covering the full fret with your forefinger? Ps - I like how you're not trying to sell me stuff 👍🏼
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
It's just my opinion :-), but here's why: 1 - If you cover it, you're more likely to strum it, which can sound muddy sometimes. 2 - If you cover it, it sends a signal to your brain that root 5 and root 6 are similiar, and you're more likely to accidentally grab the wrong one. I like my barre chords separate but equal :D

Eric, I have been playing guitar for a while now (14 years, shit that's half my life) and have always felt like I stopped making progress a long time ago. This video has completely opened up my playing. The way you communicate notes relative to chord shapes and positions is wonderful. I was stuck playing up and down minor blues scales, trying to solo over blues progressions, and it always sounded bland. With 30 minutes of following through a couple of your videos, I feel like I can play the way I always dreamed of playing. Please, please, please keep posting these wonderful lessons.

I think it’s excellent that you speak about the physicality of playing some of these things. Most teachers ignore the changes your body might need to make to help execute a part, and that can often be the critical piece that’s missing and is causing the student most of their frustration. Great job!

Exactly! I find it's so much easier to remember scales if they're attached to barre chord shapes :-)

VERY nice! Really ended up being a Hendrix/Mayer lesson to me. Those 6th's were John Mayer all the way. Almost a more useful CAGED lesson without using the word, but that's really all the CAGED system boils down to- same shapes being connected and getting you the important scale tones to use for tasty note choices!

Thanks! True story: John Mayer and I were at Berklee at the same time. Saw him around - nice guy, very funny. And yeah, a hell of a player :-D

You are a very, very good teacher. You are actually thinking in terms of your students (rather than just adding yet another good-looking video, a trap which I fear many other RU-vidrs fall into). Thank you!

Great lesson! I've been studying 6ths alot lately trying to hammer it in to my brain and this lesson made it sink in. I was alsp glad to hear you talk about bar chords being what works for you, makes me feel normal. I tend to navigate my board off bar shapes and didn't even realize it.
@EricHaugenGuitar

Yes! You can do so much with just the standard barre chord shapes that we all know so well!

Great lesson Eric. I am also particularly impressed by the guitar tone in that it is clean when played lightly, but has immediate wonderful crunch whenever attack is increased. I don't get that at all in my set up so I am hoping you can advise me about how to bring that exact tonal expressiveness about. Is it a matter of having the volume controls set exactly right on the guitar and amp or the just the guitar and it's pickups or a stomp box that you are using - or some other factor? I don't believe it is completely random, so what exactly are you doing to achieve this?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 4 года назад
Thanks Felix! For YT, my amps are actually set very quiet - like living room level volume. The squishy responsive crunch is coming from the Strymon Deco - it really is a magical pedal!
