Love my poles, they are a 100 % leg and back saver and multi use. Another tip I’ve used, if your descending a muddy slippery trail, you take off the rubber covers, stuff that tip into the muddy path and use this as a stopper so you can place a foot against it and not slide.

Good advice..I like that idea. I don’t know how many times my heels have flown out from under me going down muddy hills.

One of my favourites bits of hiking gear. I'm singing their praises all the time to those who don't use them or haven't tried them before. It surprises me that so many Aussie hikers still don't use them compared with the rate of usage by hikers in other parts of the world. They've definitely changed the game for me and help me to do bigger distances without significant fatigue. Great instructional video, Kate and good on you for giving hiking poles some well-deserved air time!

Haha thanks so much mate, I totally agree. It's a bit strange hey how a lot of Australian hiking has a lag on style from overseas - just like ultralight. I used to think poles were no good for the bush bashing i often do but geese I loved them on my more recent off track trail.

Thanks for this vid Kate. Great advice. I’ve been picking up gum branches as I needed when on a trek, had to be gumtree cos it had to be strong enough not to break and not once did I think of weight nor adjustable heights, I always got bits about shoulder height. After seeing your vid I’m going to get me a pair of these modern staffs. Can’t believe I lugged 30-40mm diameter bits of heavy wood around. Looking forward to your tent review too. Regards, Mario.

Oh brilliant thanks so much. Yes a good old stick can have quite the charm though. I do love finding just the right one. Sadly poles do lack the charm of a beautiful stick but yep tend to be a touch lighter and more forgiving grip.

Thanks Kate. I always enjoy what you post. I've been a big fan of poles, they are invaluable as your gets pack gets heavier and your legs weaker as the day goes on. I did have one near miss with a brown snake and whilst it didn't strike me I think it was my pole that confused it. I didn't see it all and placed my foot right next to it. Thanks again and keep the posts coming!

Great video Kate. I am a huge user of hiking poles, mostly when I am backpacking but I do use them sometimes for day hikes if I am climbing a mountain up to a summit. I am guilty of not always using the arm holds around my wrists especially when vlogging because I have to take them on and off so much to set up camera shots. Always love watching your videos.

Thanks Kate. I can definitely see the advantages of trekking poles but I'm currently using a modified hardwood broomstick. I have a strap on the top and hold it in the same way you do but I have some paracord binding in a couple places for grip if I wish to change where I'm holding it. I also use it at times as a pole for my tarp. One question about trekking poles though, if I chose to buy a pair, what should I be looking for? I would assume that there is little difference in the features from one brand to another so, are some brands better than others?
@KateGrarock

I’m interested in the same question. I’m more interested in the adjustment locks. I’ve seen a couple different types. I guess it does boil down to, you get what you pay for no doubt. I too just use a a bit of gumtree as I need them, however it would be cool to have a set on hand that are lighter then a bit of broom stick or gumtree ay. Think I’ll google which are the better type. Cheers.

hey sorry i didn't see the end of your comment. Snowys have a good video on this topic and how to choose. I guess there are different folding styles, and the grip is a big one, cork is expensive and then there is weight. I had a pair of black diamond and they were great bit.ly/3gIxTmg, I just upgraded to the Fizan as they are lighter and longers so I can use with my tent bit.ly/3A8y8Qb . The Snowy video is at the bottom right of this post ( I'm not recommending these poles just the video) hope it helps t.cfjump.com/74519/t/64164?Url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.snowys.com.au%2ftrail-trekking-pole

Do poles have to be in your checked in luggage? I may have tried to bring an outrigger paddle with me on the plane once… and digital calipers… and zip ties 😂 so next video is pros and cons of wearing a feather in your cap?
