How To Use M-FLASH For MSI Single BIOS/UEFI With USB Pen Drive

How to update/flash msi bios/uefi with m-flash using a USB flash drive/USB pen drive. How to flash bios MSI X299 SLI Plus motherboard. #MSI #MFlash #FlashBIOS
Notes:
1. You don't have to flash or update the bios/uefi if your not having issues it's just a good idea because it keeps you updated and can fix hardware and compatibility issues.
2. Your USB flash drive does not need to be bootable. (You don't need to create a bootable USB pen drive) you only need to format the usb flash drive and then copy the bios/uefi flash files to the root directory on a flash drive.
3. Use a 16GB USB flash/pen drive and format it to FAT32 or try NTFS, copy all bios/uefi flash files to your USB flash drive root directory, formatting FAT32 still works great and is recommended as it is widely compatible.
4. If you don't see the bios/uefi files or there are no bios/uefi files in the folder then exit out of the BIOS/UEFI and restart the computer and switch usb ports re-download a fresh copy of the flash files and double check your motherboard manual BIOS/UEFI settings to make sure your following the flash procedures correctly for your board.

This is the ONE BIOS flashing video on RU-vid that actually is easy to understand! Seriously, the other's I've seen were just not being clear about what they were explaining and cutting corners around easy steps (such as extracting the zip file). But this is the ONE video that actually breaks down each step. We need more tech tutorialists like you, Jamie. :)

sorry for hijacking top comment, but i wanted to share how i fixed my issue! was trying to use mflash to update to the latest bios on my MSI B450 gaming pro carbon AC I knew all the basic steps, and the flash drive would show up in the flash menu, but no matter what i tried it would not detect the bios file. after trying multiple videos, different USB drives, all following the fat32 stuff and renaming to MSI.ROM, i finally decided to try without changing the name. left it as the filename that it downloaded as, and boom worked perfectly the first time. very weird how everyone says to rename, but it wouldn't work for some reason, even the official msi video says to do this.

You have no idea how long I've been trying to update my bios and could not do it. The reason was I was extracting the whole thing to the USB with a folder, which I didn't know you needed to just have the files alone. You saying that one thing solved my yearly problem. Subbed because this is the best MSI BIOS tutorial on the ytube. It's so simple but so many people have a hard time with this. I would add that using a USB 2.0 port on the motherboard I/O shield is always a good idea as well. Now I gotta post this link under the official MSI tutorial because folks are lost over there!

This is the best 'how to' guide out there for updating an MSI Mobo BIOS. The official video on the MSI website is from 2015 and the process for updating has changed since then. I never like updating the BIOS so I wasn't going to update until I found a relevant guide. Thanks for posting this 👍

Extra tip: Always reset your bios to factory before you flash, because your cpu overclock or XMP overclock could make problems while update.

Another thing for beginners to note is that on a lot of MSI motherboards at least there will be a USB port on the back of your pc that has a different color surrounding it. Often it's one that you probably connected your mouse or keyboard to. Use that USB port for your flash drive. That way, in case you're not that knowledgable about pc's, you'll know you placed your drive in a port that is the right type. It's that way on my MSI Gaming Pro B450M, anyway.

Probably best practice to have your PC plugged into a UPS battery backup, instead of just a wall socket. Still wouldn't try this during a thunderstorm or brownout 'Summer high A/C' usage period'. Excellent tute.

Great video, amigo! I would add, if you have a start up RAID array you have to reset, within the BIOS, back to RAID from AHCI. As you stated, the Bios resets to factory setting-- which is, of course, AHCI, not RAID.

Your RAID array WILL NOT be deleted. Reset, within BIOS, to the RAID setting and then restart (RAID should be highlighted green and the AHCI should be black or grey). After restart, when prompted, hold done the "ctrl" and "I" keys to select your RAID array. The OS should detect the start-up drive array-- and you are good to go.

FYI in Windows 10, you can hold the shift key while clicking Restart >> Troubleshoot >> UEFI. This way it will automatically go to BIOS when it boots back up.

You just saved my ass, had to clear cmos and reseat my gpu, and luckily got back into bios after numerous attempts. I just did exactly as you said and bios updated perfectly, had to manually oc my ram and enter all the settings again, but my pc is back and up to date. Thank you so much, msi should link this video instead of their useless ancient one.

I followed all of your steps and it worked perfectly, except once i got into M-flash in the BIOS, the only file I could see was the System Volume Information file, the BIOS file was not in there... I've been trying for days to update my motherboard so it's compatible with my new 5000 series CPU, I really hope you see this and can help me man, I don't know what else to try!

you might have to check the MSI website for further support, everyone's setup is a little different, this is the process I use and mine alwasy works fine, not sure why you can't see the file, there are to many trouble shooting methods and I don't want to just keep telling you different methods and it not work. You could always tryanother USB drive and format it differently to see if that makes a difference

I have the same issue too :(. I have H110 Grenade gaming MB, downloaded the latest bios file, tried all options, moving USB slots, reformat different formats, changed usb sticks, ejects etc everything, still wont work. Please let me know if figure out how to and I will do the same

I had the same issue. Make sure your pulling the files from the unzipped folder on your desktop and not the folder that is still zipped. I had your exact problem and that was the cause for me.

Fat32 is best for xbox and playstations as well as other mother boards fat32 is used more widely even with dos as well as linux fat32 is way more compatible then NTFS hood video bro

It failed for me and now whenever i open it, it displays text that says "Exit flash mode" for a certain amount of time and then it's just a blackscreen

If it did not complete correctly That could have been for whatever reason your gonna have to check MSI support for how you can flash the bios again or try to get out of that screen and recover the bios, I did have it happen before but it’s tricky to get back but it can be done and I don’t have any videos on that because it’s not always the same process

OK I don't get how u get to the bios that looks like that, I ain't bad with computers but not smart enough for this one, how you get to the bios that looks like that only screen I get with what everyone calls the "bios" is blue grey screen with a bunch of information, like when your pc crashes, that screen, how do you get to the bios thing eith the m flash and stuff (also have an msi obviously)

in the motherboards manual it is not said to extract the zip file after download when flashing through M-Flash(also is not mentioned the fat32 format) ......n the fat32 format thing is only mentioned when u r flashing the bios through the Flash Bios Button i.e. without a cpu installed.....it is confusing(my mobo b450 motar max)

I wasnt seeing the bios in the mflash and realized I downloaded the drivers for b550m Mortar instead of b550m bazooka. This might help someone later, just double check the motherboard exactly.

My bios recognizes the drive, but not the bios file. I've tried everything but I'm really stuck. do you know what might be wrong?

IMPORTANT: If your file is not showing up in m-flash, MAke sure you selected your exact mother board model. In my case, I had the msi mpg B550 and accidentally selected B550-I and the bios file had 1 digit different and it will not show up on mfile. I hope this helps someone

first try and set you BIOS to default settings to make sure that isn't causing any issues and then try it

so when i clicked the m flash in the bios my computer completly shut down and is now giving me a blackscreen even after i resettet the bios with the battery

That don’t sound good, you might have to try some other methods to get it going. Flashes are never guaranteed but 99% of the time it’s go’s through just fine.

I'mma try and update my bios, maybe I can finally get Windows to install on my new build... it just keeps restarting in a loop when the Windows logo appears😢

that might be an operating system issue first, but I would try to update it anyway it won't hurt to try it, if it don't fix the loop issue then I would reinstall windows

@@jamiewagner it was a fresh install on a new system, updating the BIOS did the work, I managed to install it, I guess the BIOS version was not compatible with ryzen 5000, yet I somehow managed to access the BIOS😂

I have a 8GB and a 64 GB. Should I use 8 because of the Fat32? I wanted to make sure it would be big enough. On the 64 my only options are NTFS or exFat..Thanks for any help.

Hi, I updated the bios and without realizing it, instead of downloading the UPDATE for WIn10, I downloaded for Win11 then make the Update ; after which now I practically no longer have access to the bios because no matter how long I press the bios access key it does not enter ( my motherboard is a MSI A 320 A Pro ).Thank you for your interest and any help with any ideas :p

The file should show up on your flash drive if it’s formatted correctly or maybe you have a special USB port you need to use just for flashing

i have a FAT32 formatted pen drive, the latest 1.c drivers for the x97 MSI board but when i boot into bios it wont let me update the BIOS it says it cant find the file on the root directory of the pen. anyone help?

I get nothing with NTSF and with FAT32 It recognizes my drive but then says “THERE ISNT ANY BIOS FILE IN THIS USB KEY”

I would download the bios file again and see if it shows up. That’s strange that it wouldn’t see it, be sure to copy it to the root of the usb drive

hello everyone, I've recently built my first pc and I've encountered a problem with the bios. I have a 5600x so I updated the bios with a USB stick like you should but the issue is that when I power off my PC, the bios update doesn't save. So Everytime I turn off and on my pc I need to manually update the bios with my USB stick but when I restart my PC that doesn't happen. I thought I might have a faulty Cmos battery but after replacing it nothing has changed. Is the whole motherboard faulty ? i would really appreciate some help. The motherboard is a MSI B550M Pro-VDH WiFi.

wow that's very interesting issue, just the kind of stuff I used to run into when I worked on PC's, it would be the strangest of issues sometimes, so are you saying if you restart it it actually has the updated version still running? I mean so it actually did update??? but when you power off the computer and restart it it has the OLD version bios running???

@@jamiewagner when I restart it the bios stays up to date but when I turn it off and on it defaults to the factory version that isn't compatible with my cpu. Therefore I need to manually update it eveerytime to get into windows, it takes me an extra 10 min Everytime. The settings don't save either

Wow I never had that issue before but it’s obviously something with the bios/motherboard, could be having compatibility issues, check all your hardware to be sure and check through the manual because some are different or may have a different flash method, try to see if there is a reset button on that board somewhere Yeah there might be a way that if you unplug the board and let it Discharge so it’s completely dead there may be a way for you to reset it from the beginning that’s a very interesting bug that you have going on and I would love to hear the outcome

@@jamiewagner I think I know what's wrong, I'm pretty sure that I simply didn't connect the power switch proparly and that's why when I turn it off I have to turn it back on with the bios switch 😂 I'm on the way home let's see if I'm lucky. The thing is, because my bios isn't compatible out of the box I can't tell the difference between the power button not working and the bios not updating

@@jamiewagner i did mflash beta bios but then flshed it back to more stable version and i fixed the black screen i didnt have erp ready active which caused it to black screen

Check MSI support for help with it. I don’t have any other videos right now to assist helping if this video don’t work. The reason why is because I’m not sure of what other issues you might be having just keep digging for answers unfortunately I don’t have any other videos

someone else had this issue but somewhere in the comments they stated how they figured it out but I can't find it, it depends on a few things, did you build that system or did you buy it already assembled? because some people have found that using a different flash utility works but it depends

@@jamiewagner I downloaded the wrong BIOS for my motherboard 😂😂😂 The motherboard was B450 Tomahawk Max but I downloaded the non-Max motherboard's BIOS

Yours might be another way then because you should be able to update your bios whenever you want, motherboards might differ a bit for the process of flashing the bios, check your board manual
