Mimic is str8 up 🗑 💯💯💯 It stretches the samples so the longer it plays a sample, the slower it gets towards the end of that sample... so no matter what you do, your sample never goes to the beat ur putting it into, (or building around it), bc it won't even play ANY sample at ANY consistent rate. Completely ruins every beat I make using mimic, it's garbage if that can't be changed... and it does it as is, no settings touched, and it also does it with every setting intentionally turned off; no matter what, the sample goes perfectly with the timing of the beat for a few bars, (if that), then it starts to be slower and slower, and throw off the whole timing/swing of the entire song, and it does this every time the sample is played, (*just enough to throw off the timing & make the song seem weird and unpleasant to even the untrained ear). The worste part is nobody seems to know or wanna talk about this, and even I made like 5 beats/songs using Mimic, and thought they sounded ok for months, moved forward with projects, put in tons of work..... and only started to realize what it was doing after I became sensitive to it, or sometimes even just bouncing out a mix, or the stems and bringing them into Reaper to record the vocals, I would hear that the timing was waaaay off then, just not IN REASON so much. Now I hear it no matter what tho, it's unmistakable, and it's def really happening bc I've stacked the same sample twice, (one with Mimic, one just the sample in an empty track), and sure enough, it makes it very clear that it's def happening. Now I can't even handle listening to any of those beats, bc it's all I can hear, the timing/swing going out of sync every few bars, it's so bad it makes it feel/seem like its actually the timing of all my other instruments/percussion sounds; like IT'S ALL off timing.. and nobody likes those particular songs as much, even tho they've otherwise extremely good, and the same ppl love many other songs I make that aren't as good musically.... but they don't seem to know why tho. Now I finally understand why, it's this stupid sampler that manipulates your samples in ways that ruin your music, and that you don't want it to, without you knowing about it, bc it's a baked in effect that you can't modify, (apparently). If anyone actually knows what I'm talking about and why it does it, and how to make it NOT do it, pls lmk, it would be a VERY big help! I'm forced to just use samples as they are by putting them directly into an empty track.... but that doesn't have the slices or anything, so it's extremely time consuming & difficult to achieve a similar effect. Mimic has some really handy features, namely the slice thing, that I haven't seen in any other Reason+ or free plugin otherwise... so it'd be a shame if this one ridiculous problem ruined it and can't be fixed. Why they would make it do that AUTOMATICALLY is beyond me... 🤔 But it does ruin the music, so it's basically only good for really short samples, and as a fun TOY for noobs who don't have the ear training yet to be bothered by it. What a waste smh 🤦 Hopefully SOMEONE OUT THERE knows why it does it and a way to stop it 😆 Cheers y'all 🍻 ✌️😎 🔹️🔷️CYRUS🔷️🔹️
Nice video. I really liked the combinator idea at the end. I want to stress how much more there is to do in Multi Pitch mode, though. You can set each slot to a certain area of the keyboard. That way it's not always playing them simultaneously. If I ever use them simultaneously, it's usually just to add a subtle sample to compliment a sample that's up front. The best part about that mode is the ability to have multi pitch of individual samples on different parts of the keyboard. You can even change the root notes to keep the keys of one slot in the same octave of another. It may seem like a dull idea but once you get the right samples programmed in there it's a lot of fun.
Great tutorial. One question: how do I press one key or pad and get it to play the entire sample and loop? When I hit a key, it plays only to the extent that I press it (quick release), regardless of the mode I'm in.
Great video so thank you. One question is, if you’ve got 8 different samples in mimic, and you record with say slice 1, how do you start to use slice 2 without it triggering slice 1. I found when I’ve recorded with sample 1, and select 2, it uses the previous one. Am I missing something? Thank you
Hey, so I'm having a timing problem with a beat I made using Mimic/Reason... and I can't figure out which setting is causing it, (I thought it would be the stretch effect, but you didn't mention it in that chapter so Idk). We're pretty deep into the process now, recording a demo song we wrote to the instrumental; but this issue has been throwing me off all along, both mixing the beat AND recording my verse lyrics, (it's a fairly technical Hip-Hop flow, so timing has to be absolutely dead on for it to work.... and I nail it with just the metronome, sounds good still with most of the beat added, but then I bring in all the samples from Mimic and it makes it sound off). I made my own original compositions, to intentionally sound like old recordings, then sampled different parts of them through Mimic to make the actual beat, (so I could make sample-based style Hip-Hop without having to clear samples from other people's work), and it all seemed to work great....... But I eventually started to notice that the samples, (which are like 8 full bars long btw), do this thing where the timing is perfect at first, but by halfway through the sample is slows it down more and more, so the notes in the 2nd half are all landing late. I fixed most of them by manually chopping up the stems in Reaper and shifting the timing of the individual notes/sections to where they land on time....... but the main one is a pretty intricate loop/sample, and I don't think I'll be able to fix it that way and still have it sound right. so here I am..... trying to figure out how Mimic works and what setting is causing that effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. BTW... I'm using a Stretch-Speed of 109.3%, (which is what makes the sample sound just right), and a Speed-Mod-Amount of 100%, on the setting 'Aftertouch', which I now suspect to be the where the problem lies.... but I'll finish this post just in case I'm wrong or someone else comes along with the same problem and sees this, (plus I still don't know which thing is causing it even if I'm right, the Stretch itself, the Mod knob, or the Aftertouch setting... and I def need to keep the time-stretch at 109.3% or the whole song is messed up 😆). 🤞😎 🔹🔷CYRUS🔷🔹
UPDATE: I went back to the original samples and tried turning the Mod knob down to 0% and the Aftertouch setting off..... this did not fix the problem.
Cheers for this tutorial, really useful tips.I made a huge leap from reason 4 to 12 last year&all I can say is I love it.seen a few online putting it down in comparison to other D.A.W.S,but I don't care,I say again It's Banging!anyway,Cheers for your tutorials.they have inspired me alot.cheers
great video. cant wait to try this. If Reason Plus would allow people to purchase rack extensions and patches for a steep discount only while a member, so you could keep things when you left, would be a great idea to help people who are discouraged with subscriptions. everyone would win.
Definitely! But Mimic is not a standalone RE, it's intended to be a "core" Reason 12 upgrade, like Thor, so it won't be available for separate purchase ever.
maybe i am stupid but i don't understand why there are different slots for pitch and slice if you can only play one of them with your keyboard, you have to duplicate mimic to play the other slots anyway...
I haven't tried recording audio directly into Mimic. I do it into the sequencer, then export as a sample. Gives you more control over the audio editing before you start chopping.
Do you or does anyone know how to make the sample chops (when using Slice Mode) play in time with the BPM of the track you're creating similar to the way it works in Serato Sample?
@@StockMusicMusician Thank you for the quick reply. It is a shame that capability isn't built into Reason. I will have to continue to use Serato Sample.
Great video! I am having a lot of fun with the mimic sampler. I think it definitely compliments some of the other samplers out there that can do things it can’t, like serato for example. Love your content and all your knowledge. Keep it up!
Are there options for file saving/export? Can you save the sliced file as a Rex file? Can a saved wav file retain its slice information like the old acid files? NNXT format? After doing the work in Mimic, is the sliced sample limited to staying within Mimic?
Mimic has nothing to do with Rex. You could bounce in place and then bounce to Rex. If you save a Mimic patch, it saves the slice points, but they are tied to Mimic.
Can you assign a specific slice to a specific key. Say for like if you want to use drum pads. So I could just drop a sample in then set keys in that single sample slices to my pads.
I mean more along the lines of being able to assign keys for slice edit mode. Like if I were to load a single sample of a drum loop and then find the kick high hat and snare from that loop and set them for keys I want rather then chromatic key assigning.
Waves new sampler Cr8 is just $9 and functions similar to this, and includes COSMOS for FREE which smacks down the Reason browser. Talk about value for your money.
@@HOLLASOUNDS I know. This tactic is to lure customers into purchasing plug-ins who may be unaware of how Waves gets you on the back end with there "Update plans".
@@coldskoolbeatz Its not usually the update plans its usually about getting more people to see there adds and becoming new customers ones they have been exposed to a Brand. I'm very stubborn when it comes to spending money, and even when stuffs free I ask My self the questions "Do I need it?" "will I use it?" And most of the time it's no. I dont use the stuff I already have fully as it is.
It should automatically be added to the song self-contained samples folder. Then you need to enable the preference to self-contain samples with songs, so that it saves the sample as part of the saved file.
