How To Use Moom App and Stream Deck For Window Management On Mac
In this video I run through all preferences of Moom app for mac. Moom allows you to create custom screen layouts for your applications and switch between them using hotkeys. It also has a great window snapping feature, to allow you to 'snap' a window to a particular area of the screen. Then you can also define your own particular areas of the screen for windows to snap to and assign hotkeys for them too.
I also show you how you can then use Stream Deck multi actions to open up all of your apps and arrange them just as you want them.
It is a really great app to use with larger displays. I find it useful for window management on a 4K display.

I will never understand the behavior of Trolls. An expert takes the time to create quality content. For Free. And someone has the balls to throw shade because they feel the first few minutes is not relevant. As if they person surfing youtube for free content hasn't already wasted half their day watching cat videos. If you actually paid money for something, then you can complain. But how in the effe do you have the audacity to complain for something no one made you watch. Trolls are gonna troll, I guess. Great walkthrough Alec, thank you! I've been using MOOM for some time but never really got to save configurations so much. The shortcuts and dragging windows to snap was sufficient. But now with using the Ecamm and it's many small modules/windows open, that's where the beauty of MOOM comes in. So I'm following the instructions sire!

I went ahead and purchased Moom. Thanks for your review. Fun to read the comments and see other unique things that people have discovered. I didn't realize how helpful Moom could become. I'm enjoying it on a 50' monitor and allows me to move things so quickly without having to drag and drop across all that screen space.

Thanks James... It's an over used phrase, but I do feel Moom is a game changer.... there, I said it! So easy to switch from one work state to another, and coupled with Stream Deck, it's pretty cool!

This is an excellent video! I tried the app and it works just as described. Multiple monitors supported. Bare in mind: To actually open the apps you have to launch them a different way. But I for instance just launch all apps once and then just rearrange them with the tool

Great uses for Moom. I want to adopt quite a few of them. Do you know of anyway to use Moom to put two apps in split view on Catalina and later? I use that for full screen on two apps and can slide the horizontal spacing....

I never knew about the drop down where you could do custom layouts. I have had this app for years and did not know that. Thank you very much. I bought your course on stream deck and it was very good also. I’ve actually ditched the stream deck now because you can use your iPad as a mobile screen for stream deck now, and i have an iPad Mini I dock right next to me when I’m on computer and that connects flawlessly with my computer. The benefit for me is I have two MBPro, and 3 PC, and instead of now having to plug the stream deck with usb into each computer to use stream deck, I can now wirelessly switch to a computer in seconds and use iPad mini to use shortcuts. It’s amazing. Thanks for opening my eyes to the stream deck and it’s functionality.

Very nice walkthrough, thanks Alex. I am still new to Moom but I cans ee all the possibilities. going from one setup to the other it seems that Moom leaves some unwanted windows opened. For example if 1st set is safari and word, and second set is text edit and iTunes when going to second set we con still see safari and word windows. is there a turnaround to this?

Comprehensive demo thanks. Unfortunately, the resolution wasn't crisp enough to see the menus and drop-downs crisply but it worked for me.

Hello. I checked out your video for using Moom with Mac Windows, and thought it was quite nice. Thank you for making it. I did however have an issue. When I use my trackpad on my laptop and go to the green Maximize or Zoom button, no matter what settings in the preferences I set in Moom, I do not ever get or see the person character with drop down control, or the grid (select size) control. Is there something I am doing wrong with Moom which is why I don't get those controls? Is there a trick to getting this setup to have those controls in my popup control? Thank you for your assistance.

This is a very informative video, Alec. Thanks for putting it together. One small discovery: although the UI implies that 9x9 is the maximum grid layout, you can manually enter up to 25x25 in those fields.

Alec, thumbs up great content. Just wonder about your trick to keep Moom minimized when updating the snap in Moom minimized after hit the update button? 2nd monitor or how do you get Moom out of the picture after pressing a rearrange hockey from Moom?

Hi Juergen, I don’t normally notice an issue with that since Moom is normally running in the menu bar… if open up the Moom preferences to save the screen layout, then when I go to use that activate that layout again, with shortcut etc…. Then the moom preferences would not be open. Moom does no open up applications, it just rearranges named windows. It may also be that moom just ignores its own preferences window for the purposes of window arrangement, which would make sense…. Whatever the case it is just not an issue I have experienced when I have moom only running in the background/menubar. LEt me know if you are having any other behaviour issue though! 🙏🙂

Really great info to Moom. I've used Magnet and been really happy. But I love the idea of being able to save window positions and being able to swap between them. My mind is buzzing with ideas! One question though, does Moom remember the position of all the individual windows within Ecamm Live? I would love to be able to swap between different layouts. Does that work? Thanks!

Sorry again for the late reply!! As you say, it does work on multiple desktops and also with all of the Ecamm windows…. Alec, great content. I heard you saying that you are using virtual camera with zoom. My experience with the virtual cam in zoom is bad resolution and the audience is telling me they cannot read. How do you came across this challenge?

The trick to get higher resolution when sharing your screen with the Ecamm Virtual Camera is to use Ecamm Live's "Sharing Window" option.... in the "Output" menu (in the menu bar) look for "Sharing Window" and turn that on. Now, in Zoom, do a screen share, but look for the "Ecamm Sharing Window" in the list.... now you have a clean Ecamm Live feed going into zoom, and zoom will be treating it differently to a camera feed and will give it the higher resolution usually only given to zoom screen shares. I love your videos, and I really want to build Stream Deck-shortcuts for Moom-popping up the windows like this in a few typical work situations that I do every week. But since I don't even get that popup-thing when hovering over the green "maximize-button", I can't do this. Any suggestions? Already bought Moom.

21:36 I found what that is: if you press CMD+F19 once, you get that foating window, what's what they call "grid" you can move it around with the arrows and resize it with arrows+tab. Once you're happy with the locaiton and size, press enter. this will move and resize the active window. To access the normal moom menu, press again CMD+F19. Quite useful actually Edit: the reason you got confused is because you used this command with the moom menu active. You cant resize it (ironically) so that's why it didnt work. I got confused by that as well

Does this work with an external monitor connected to a MacBook Pro ? If the monitor is big, can I split in 6 screens ?

Yes it does work with external monitors. I have 4 monitors plugged into my mac, one of which is 43". You can adjust the 'grid' that the windows snap to - mine is 12x12, so I can snap to any combination of those 'virtual tiles' on the screen. However the real power of Moom for me is snapshots of screen layouts. I open up all of my apps, and then with a single button, Moom puts them all in their correct places across all 4 of my monitors. It's awesome!

Hey help please !! , I'm having trouble finding the setting to make a window stay afloat (on top of other windows, even when clicking other windows). Basically the "always on top " option , I can't locate it, and I refuse to believe that Moom doesn't have this feature!! Can anyone help?( I'm using a semi-transparent text editor, which is really convenient for my use case, and unfortunately, I can't switch to a different behavior.)

@@marcusbjork7905 I found a fix for this a while back. Either by messing around with things or from the devs support, I don't recall. One thing to check is with Moom open, go to Mouse (top tabs) and assure that 'Pop up controls when hovering over a Zoom button' is checked and then next to Show, that "Moom controls" (dropdown) by default is selected.

Great suggestion! There’s a few options available for window management… the feature that sold me on Moom though was the easy of saving entire window layouts over multiple desktops, something I don’t think that SizeUp or the others do.
