You are amazing! Thank you for explaining everything so clearly - not a wasted word. In an ideal world you would be sat alongside me as I work, but being only a few clicks away is the next best thing.. There are so many questions out there and you always have the answer. Thank you.
After so many years of me working on a Mac finally someone explains this feature in a way that it actually isn't confusing anymore but actually seeming rather worthwile!
What about a way to have different files/folders on each desktop, instead of all of them on every desktop. Is there any software, extension or trick to get that?
No, it doesn't work that way. The files are actually in the Desktop folder. What you see on over the desktop background is another way to view that. Since folders don't work that way, it isn't possible. Maybe consider storing your files in Documents anyway -- that is what I recommend.
Thank you! I wish Apple would give us the option to rename a desktop to some other meaningful name, like: “mail”, and that it would stay there until further changes.
@@hell_inn0258 windows let's you rename, but there's np rearrangement, dragging windows between desktops or separate virtual desktops per display. idk what Microsoft is thinking
Thanks, Gary, for a complete, including settings, video on Spaces/Desktops PROFESSIONALLY done. Having done dozens of professional software training videos myself, I can appreciate a pro and focus on learning rather than cursing under my breath as someone stumbles around the subject, obviously unprepared. I have subscribed and you will be my first reference for any OS X issues going forward. THANK YOU!
PRO TIP!!! Each new desktop can have it's own background desktop picture. 2 finger tap on each desktop and choose a new background photo. Now when you swipe between desktops it gives the impression of a completely new workspace. I assign apps to only "live" on certain desktops. There you go, no extra charge.
This is so nice! I have one question. When I run python program, it always activate Google Chrome browser. So it always moves back to the mission control where the Chrome is activated. Can I fix my working mission control even if chrome browser is activated in other mission control?
Joining the chorus to say what a helpful tutorial this is! Spent so many years thinking I’d never get the hang of multi-desktops but I’m gonna give it a try now.
Hi Gary, another very useful video tutorial 👍 Question: I designated in Mission Control 4 desktops to 4 applications. However when I start up my computer again te day after only 1 designated desktop is active in Mission Control. The other 3 designated desktops are empty again?? How do I permanently save designated desktops in Mission Control? 🙏
I was dying to have this explained, as there is very little documentation on it. Thank you so much for making this video! It's important to understand how this screen flipping works (even if we HATE it!) Maybe if I stop fighting with this feature I won't hate it as much.
Is there a way I can keep some folders on Desktop 2 while the Desktop 1 does not add these folders to the home desktop? Hope that question makes sense.
OH MY Garlic!! After having used mac computers for more than a decade, how did I not know about these shortcuts!! This is Gold!!!! thank you so much for your tutorial!!!! You saved me great deal of time and increased my productivity!! thank you thank you thank you!! one of the most useful videos I came across on RU-vid! I'm subscribing to your channel immediately!
Wow, Gary. Every time I read the heading of one of your new videos I go "Duh! I know how to use that function - Gimme something new!" And then when I watch said video, you simply blow me out of my chair with usability and functions that go into a whole new level. Thanks man, you never disappoint!
Hi Gary, Thanks for your great content. I'm a big fan of fullscreen desktop views. I was wondering if there's a way the mac can remember the set-up and when you start up the computer it launches with your preferred set-up? My go-to is: D1: My working area + browsing, D2: Things + Ulysses split view, D3: Superhuman (Email), D4: Fantastical + occasionally another space depending on what I do. Ps. I tried the Control-Click but it doesn't show up on Big Sur beta. Thanks.
Do you know if you can save the layouts and name them? I restarted my computer and it pushed everything back to one page. Thank you for the great video.
All those features are very powerful but yet can get confusing very quickly. Thank you for your explanations and then for explaining how to shut off the features that I don't need to use, which is essentially all of them. With all the different spaces/desktops on my MacBook Pro with 2 attached monitors, it's just way too confusing. Ok the bright side, my mac does work and it always works reliably which is something I can't say about my other windows machines.
Have never used this, because I just haven't got around to learning it. Sooooooooo useful for me! Why, oh why, oh why didn't I learn to use this before ;-)
The desktop items are the same across all desktops. Doesn't Zoom have an option for hiding desktop items -- or maybe it is another app that does. If this is a problem, I would consider keeping a clean desktop instead.
Great presentation on the use of multiple desktop. Like the previous comments, after many years of working on a Mac, Macmost has provided a simple, intuitive and productive way to use multiple desktops and split-screen features. Thanks.
Sooo Good! You area an Excellent instructor for sure!!!! Thank YOU for creating this video, it was wayyyyy helpful in keeping me productive!!!!!! All The Best!
Using multiple desktops can be hugely beneficial. I do statistical analysis and have a statistics program, editor, and document file open on 1 desktop, work email and finder window on another, browser, personal email and another finder on yet a 3rd. I used to use two monitors but actually find this more convenient. I am using a 27" iMac.
Hi Gary, I’m writing you here because I need some help, I purchased an audiobook on iBooks, then I found it in the Containers folder, I would like to extract the .mb4 file and convert it too .mp3, I tried some online converters but the file it too heavy, do you know some macOS apps that could handle it ? Thanks
I've never tried to do that as I don't have any mb4 files (I use Audible myself). I guess see what is in the Mac App Store, or keep trying (but be safe!). Sorry I can't be of more help.
RUST I would look at the free Audacity audio editor for Mac. I used it years ago to convert cassette tapes to MP3. Am sure they have a blog and a info page
Apple always chooses the MOST FRUSTRATING defaults. "Automatically rearrange" and "Desktops have separate spaces" should both be default off. Apple, just because you CAN do something different doesn't mean you SHOULD. It just makes us have to fix your broken shit all the time. Also those direct shortcuts for changing desktops doesn't work with the numbers on the 10-key, WTH!
I'm new the Mac world (I've had a iPhone and iPad), but I'm confused. My dual screen set up automatically switches sides, every 4th or 5th time I wake up the computer. I saw some suggestions, like un check mission control, but that doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?
Mine must be badly bugged... any time I grab something in the second or third desktop it jumps back to the first desktop. I can't figure out why. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
Thank you for this... I miss, however, the old tiled version of spaces (Snow Leopard I think) where I could also set up a grid and move around the grid. Now its just a line only.
Windows is actually better at handling virtual desktops; at least you can name your desktops to easily identify which type of work that desktops contains. AFAIK, you can't do that on the Mac.
oh my god thank you, this video save my life Ive been having trouble with opening finder while plugging in a projector, it always opens in my projection screen, which can be dangerous, Im gonna try tweaking mission control
Hi, Gary, Great tutorial and it was very informative. What I am trying to do is move files that are saved on my desktop to my good ladies desktop. But i guess thats not possible, Thanks so much.
This is FANTASTIC! THANKS! I thought I was pretty good with multiple desktops but for most of this I HAD NO IDEA. Especially love turning off the annoying "features" that I don't like (like jumping to the desktop with open app) and turning on great new things like "Hot Corners". Thanks again - you rock!
Its crazy how the little things in life (that drive me up a tree) can be resolved and appreciated more than once. Im on my dads new computer and I thought that the feature and hotkeys were a default but ive only had laptops. Bam I saw your face and im like whos this mothe.... oh yes no ive been at this cross road. Its wild that one (slightly) better search query on youtube is better than three (debatably english) on google. You a are a scholar and a gentlement
It is good to know. But as much as it possible to arrange your Windows over different Desktops, I was myself willing to disseminate my many Folders or kind of 'Documents' over different Desktops and this does not seem possible, does it ?
It doesn't affect the dock and that sucks. It would be epic if dock would also be separated resulting in having one desktop completely for free time stuff and the other one completely for work
And once I have the apps in full screen mode, I cannot even use command tab anymore to jump to a specific window but have to scroll through every open desktop. Well thats inefficient..
Using the green icon to exit the full screen when I was in split screen was aggravating me lol everytime I did it, the other one stayed in full screen. Thanks for this video, my headache is gone!
ok . i already know that .. it is simple . how do you enable those windows to come up that is what you should be doing ???? ugh .. if i only knew the name or how to enable it, that will solve the problem
Yes. Use Mission Control to move one window to another Desktop. Or, do you mean the exact same browser window? You can do that as well, by Control+clicking on the browser in the Dock, and assigning to All Desktops.
Is there a way I can mirror few of those desktops and not the entire screen. I dont want to extend the monitor as I want to be able to type in to the second screen and not to look at far away projector to type something into it.
Never understood good practices for this feature besides using it as some sort of reference such as comparing many photos. In first place if you have like 4+ different apps open you're doing something wrong as humans cannot really multitask so clicking on taskbar/dock and switching between apps is far more efficient and you get more space as each app is fullscreen than 3-4 apps on Desktop 1 and another 3-4 on Desktop 2.
Thanks for another informative video. I have this problem when I tried to use two apps in a single screen: when I hovered upon the maximise green button, I got no options as you showed 'enter full screen, tile window to left/or right of the screen. Is there anything I have to do in preferences?
