Neural Amp Modeler (NAM) by Steven Atkinson
Neural Amp Modeler Facebook Group:
/ 5669559883092788
NAM Colab page with "Easy Mode" script already loaded and ready to go:
colab.research.google.com/git...
Training .wav file (this is a new version from whats in my video):
drive.google.com/file/d/1v2xF...
Profile loader VST3/AU:
github.com/sdatkinson/NeuralA... (download the installer)
My NAM Models (guitar and bass stuff - mostly high gain):
drive.google.com/drive/folder...
Step by step how to use NAM "Easy Mode"
1- Download the "V1_1_1.wav" here:
drive.google.com/file/d/1v2xF...
2- Play that audio file through your amp rig and record the output. Amp only! No Cabinet.
3- Export your recorded wav file as 24bit 48khz and name it "output.wav"
4- Make sure your output.wav is EXACTLY the same size as V1.wav (this has to be sample-perfect or it wont work)
5- Go to the Google Colab website
colab.research.google.com/git...
6- Click on the folder icon (left side of screen under the spyglass and the "{x}" icons)
7- Drag and drop your audio files (V1.wav and output.wav) into the blank area at that opens up when you click on the folder icon
8- Scroll down to "Step 2: Installation" and click on the "[ ]" inside the darker box inside of the Step 2 area. Should see a bunch of script stuff fill the page. Scroll down.
9- Underneath "Step 3: Train!" find the 2nd darker box. If you want to increase the epochs, find where it says "run(epochs=100)" and type in whatever you want.
"run(epochs=1000)" is great but remember that it takes about 8 seconds per-epoch so plan accordingly.
10- Click on the "[ ]" inside of Step 3 to begin running the training. If you see a red "play" button, find the error message below and report it on the user group. If its running correctly, you will see a loading bar filling up over and over with an Epoch number in front of it.
11- When its done, you will see a new folder in the folder section called "exported_models". Open up the sub-folder that has 6 different files in it. Right-click and download "config.json" and "weights.npy". Its a good idea to put them both inside a folder on your computer and name that folder after the hardware you modeled and the date you made the model or other details (easier reference if you make multiple versions).
12- Download the NeuralAmpModeler.vst3/AU using the installer and put it in your VST3 folder
github.com/sdatkinson/NeuralA...
13- Start up your DAW and load up NAM Snapshot (folder is called "Steve Atkinson" in your VST3 finder).
14- Click the "Choose Model" button on the GUI and find the folder with your config.json and weights.npy files.
15- Add an IR after the NAM Snapshot plugin
16- Enjoy
If you want to adjust the epochs or the number of channels
run(epochs=X, stage_1_channels=Y)
Where:
X = 100 for quick and decently accurate
X = 1000 for slow and very accurate
Y = 12 for lightweight VST3 CPU cost but less articulate
Y = 16 for typical kinda heavy CPU cost (this is the default)
Y = 20 for very heavy CPU cost but more articulate

This is great Jason - thanks, and the consolidated links are very helpful. Depending on which DAW you use to generate the output file, it can be tricky to get it 48kHz 24bit mono wav, the exact same length as the training file. But this is key to being able to generate a model file.

I have Tonex Max and a Tonex Capture And A tonex Pedal. This stuff is amazing. I modeled a bunch of my amps. So far: 1978 Marshall 2203. Marshall SV-20h Marshall JTM-60, Marshall Origin 20, Marshall JVM 205h, Marshall DSL 40C, Fender Blues Jr., Vox AC-30, Blackstar HT-60 Dual Stage, Bugera 1960 infinium. I did several settings of captures of each amp. With Tonex to do an advanced capture It takes 4 minutes for the capture and 16-17 minutes for the training. The results are stunning. I'm dying to try NAM!! It is very exciting!

Thats awesome, man! Great amp collection, btw!Tonex definitely has an great system. Relatively easy to use, it sounds great (depending on how well the amp was modeled by the guy who modeled it) and it has that pedal now which is huge for playing live. @@jasonzdora Yeah! I'm stoked to check NAM out! I'm OK with Nerdy! I put together two computers to handle my home :guitar room" and my Cottage studio. Each computer cost $670.00 or so to build. On Amazon I got two Dell Optiplex 9020's i-7 with 32 GB ram for like 270.00 each. I went to best buy and got a couple of 750 watt power supplies like 69.00 each and a pair of NVIDIA 1680 (or is it 1660 can't remember) with 6gb of ram 269.00 ea. I also needed two 8 dollar power supply adapters (Dell has a proprietary power connection and you need an adapter to use an after market adapter but it is stupid easy to build these and as for speed of profiling they ate top class! I'm pretty sure they cost like 670 ea or something like that tax and all. Once I tried Tonex I immediately upgraded to max and got the capture. My profiles are just the amp (a couple amps with a tube screamer and or an SD-1). No attempt to use studio pres or eq's as I'm not really proficient at that stuff. Most of the Tonex captures in their factory stuff sounds like Kaa Kaa to me. Though the Black Angus one that opens with the program is quite good if you roll back your guitar volume just a tad. I have come across a few excellent captures from two users one is axemaster, and the other is the lonely rocker and one more is a member called plattino.

Great video, Jason! I have a question about applications for this. When grabbing a capture of the initial .wav file through an amp/amp sim, that cooks in the amp settings, right? I'm thinking about how practical it would be to rent some physical amp heads to run through this and start building a catalog. However, this would be pretty limiting since I'd only be capturing each amp at the specific settings I used during the initial capture, right?
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora Год назад
Thats exactly right. This is a "snapshot" of the amp at those settings. I wouldnt go crazy renting amps just yet. The software is being developed. Have fun with it for now and kinda get your feet wet. I used an amp sim as an easy example. I plan on using a combination of plugins and hardware to make an amp tone that is fully produced and polished (minus the IR of course). Thats my next thing to try. You should join the Facebook group! Lots of discussion as well as contributions to the project (people sharing their captures, people helping develop the system, etc). If anything, you can track the progress on things and contribute with your suggestions on what it can do better. You also get a bunch of freebies for amp captures to try out!

This is fairly true of profiling as a whole - it's why you'll often see multiple captures of the same amp just with different settings. Kempers etc all have tone controls, but they're more like applying EQ curves than turning tone controls on real amps.

Thanks for breaking the capture process down! I am going to try this. For clarity, do I need to run my DAW output through a re-amp box to go into my physical amp’s guitar input jack? Also, is there a Mac version of the VST3 file?
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora Год назад
He is working on the AU version of the profile loader. He doesnt own a mac so its tough for him to implement. As far as the signal, I think its definitely a good idea to use a reamp box. But really, whatever sound you get out of your amps with a regular line in should be reflected in the model so if you can get a good tone out of your amp with a line level signal, go for it!
@cmd_f5
@cmd_f5 Год назад
Lol I'm back again. :p Question about epochs and google collab. Is there a rough estimate on the max you can do for a capture before it times out? I'd look on the fb group but I ditched fb like five years ago so am kinda the outsider here haha. It seems like most people do 250 to 500, but I've seen some crazy 1000+ epoch captures, wondering when it starts to become diminishing returns etc. I'll probably just try 100 as a starter and go from there. Thanks for all the great vids on this stuff!
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora Год назад
I think people have settled on 300 as the optimal choice for quality and wasting time. Collabs is weird and picky about how long something can run but you just create a new email address or use a different web browser and you basically continue with that one until the other one isnt timed out anymore.

What are the important signal levels or where is a good setting to start when recording the file? Adjust amp gain, amp volume, or signal from v1 file? My first try with mesa mark v amp was .000 but the tone was clean and should have a heavy gain sound from ch2. Thanks for all your videos, great job.
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora Год назад
I would set up my hardware loop (audio interface output > Reamp box > amplifier > load box > audio interface input) and then play guitar through that system and listen to the amplifier through your DAW to see how it sounds. Then look at how loud your guitar signal is compared to the v1 file. I would adjust your guitar signal so it is similar in volume to the v1 file. Maybe record a loop of yourself playing some gutiar chords and look at that recorded audio and compare it to the v1 file. They should be relatively the same volume. This way, when you play the V1 file through your amplifier, what you are recording back into your DAW is basically going to sound just as distorted as the gutiar chords loop you were playing through that signal chain a moment ago. That should give you a good Output.wav and a good NAM model.

insane. the possibilities! I have a question, and I know you just did an example ‘in the box’ in your video here. but, what is required for a real amp to be sampled? I have a Trainwreck Express amp that I would love to try this with. I have a Hot Plate that has a line out. I also have a Focusrite Scarlett. I keep seeing ‘remap box’ and that the signal feed into the amp needs to be instrument (not line) level, which makes sense. is that what a reamp box will achieve? is there no way to simulate that with a simple audio interface? thanks for the video. just found out about this, and it’s super exciting to see!

@jasonzdora Год назад
A reamp box is meant to turn a line level signal (~500 to 1500 ohms) to a guitar hi-z level (~50k to 100k ohms) which gives the input of your amplifier the kind of signal it is expecting. This gives you a much more "natural" capture as the v1_1_1.wav training file is being performed through your amplifier in its "intended" impedance and level, so long as you set the level correctly. If you dont have a reamp box, the cheaper way to achieve this is to use a DI box in reverse. Or you could try using a tuner pedal that has a buffered input. Usually those will output a signal with a higher resistance than just a regular line level output from your Scarlett. Not sure what a Hot Plate is but I assume that its line level output would suffice for bringing the signal back into your DAW. The only thing to look out for is to make sure that your amplifier has a "load" on it (the speakers are connected and absorbing all of that energy coming from the amp or your Hot Plate is capable of doing the same thing).

About normalizing of wav of DI. I think you need to stay with original audio volume or you will need to boost your guitar signal when play through resulted NAM model.
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora Год назад
When we normalize the Output.wav (the recording of the distorted guitar) we are not changing the gain staging of the input signal (the DI track). We are only telling NAM to make the output of the amp model louder. You can experiment with this to see what happens. I also believe that newer versions of this system (there have been several updates since this video) will auto-normalize the output.wav already to help standardize the loudness of each amp model you load.

@@user-os3vt8lm6g I havent normalized the input.wav in this video. The best practice would be to play your guitar straight into the amplifier to see how that sounds, then adjust the gain of the input.wav until it sounds like it makes the same kind of sound as your gutiar. In this video, I just left my DI signal the gain level I normally use it and I left Input.wav the way that it came to me and it worked out fine. The process you are talking about (extracting the IR from a guitar amp suite plugin) is a different process. I have a video that shows how to do that. I would not use NAM to copy an IR from the guitar cabinet of a VST. Video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a0kouHUz0YQ.html

I've made a few captures of my amps and all but one turned out to have much less gain. Where am I going wrong?
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora Год назад
Likely you are sending too weak of a signal into the amplifier. I would record some regular gutiar DIs of you strumming some chords and loop those. I would play those through whatever setup you are normally playing the NAM training file through (the output of your audio interface > your reamp box > the input of your amplifier > your load box > the input of your audio interface) and I would listen to how those looped chords sound coming back into your DAW. If the gain is too low, turn up the output on your reamp box. As long as your DI track is the same volume that your guitar is normally when you plug your gutiar straight into your audio interface, the gain level you hear coming through that signal chain should be equivalent to how the model will end up sounding.
@relativetimeworx8459
@relativetimeworx8459 4 месяца назад
So, the code requires the prebuilt trainer, correct? You can't train using just any DI track?
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora 4 месяца назад
Correct. there are technical elements to the trainer file that allow for precise quantization and alignment. there are also loud and quiet sounds which help train the model to understand the full volume spectrum. you can replace some of the middle portion of the file with your own DI tracks.
@feoul92

Hi Jason. I tried using the same method as above, but when I reamp on Ableton (using Plugin and freeze and flatten), the reamped signal goes out of sync just a little much making it impossible for me to train. Any help would be appreaciated. its almost like the reamped signal goes out of tempo by a few milliseconds.
@jasonzdora
@jasonzdora Год назад
What does the error message say? The frozen/flattened reamp signal can be up to 1 second "out of sync" with the training file. Dont worry about lining them up because the system will do that on its own automatically. You dont have to manually re-align anything. The part you have to worry about is getting the length of both audio clips the EXACT same size. Its likely that is what is causing an error.

I would ask on the discord or the facebook group. I dont have the technical skills to help you, unfortunately. It just worked for me. Check your exported audio tracks and make sure they are the same length. You dont have to align them but they do have to be the EXACT same length. The extra 1 second of silence at the end of the training file is there on purpose. Its there because the system will self-correct the alignment of the impulses at the beginning of the file. You dont need to do any editing besides making sure both files are the exact same length.
