This tutorial explains by practical demonstration how to use Nikon’s Auto AF Fine Tune on your Nikon DSLR to get accurate focus on your subject. So if you’ve never used this feature in your camera or used it and didn’t get the results you were after, then maybe you weren’t doing it properly. So watch this tutorial and follow along and you’ll nail it very easily.
This tutorial shows how I use the Auto AF Fine Tune on my Nikon D500 coupled with the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 lens to achieve more accurate focus across the range of this lens.
At the moment the only Nikon cameras that have this feature are the D500, D7500, D850, D5 and D6.

Excellent video. One suggestion. Zoom in on the target in Live View to fill the frame with the target.

@@CharlesNPhotography Charles, I have also noticed that Uv filters affect focus, now to complicate matters further. A sigma uv can be great on one lens, yet poor on another. I find that I have to test hoya uv or sigma uv on the same lens to get the best result. I prefer uv as they protect the front element from cleaning scratches.

Thanks very much Bill, and No! you have to be hands-on to do this adjustment. This is a tutorial that I'd been wanting to do for a while, but it was very time consuming to do. Really hoping that it gains traction on RU-vid and many people watch it.

Charles, my 200-500 on z6II was spot on but I have a doubt with my 500PF on z6II, then in the Nikon Canada website in a tutorial video AF fine tuning they were saying mirrorless doesn't have this problem like DSLR, could you say something on it.

Hi Charles! Thanks for the valuable tips. I also have manual lenses to be used with my Nikon D850 body. I use either the white dot focus confirmation in the viewfinder, or the focus peaking feature in live view mode. I however, found that the later provides a lot sharper results with the same MF lens. (?) Should I consider the AF fine tuning process for the MF lenses too? I actually made an attempt to do it, but the despite of having the confirmation message popping up (new AF fine tune value is saved) the new value was always 0 for MF lenses. Any hint what should be done?

The Auto AF Fine Tune will only work with Auto-focus lenes.

I have Nikon D750 with Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art. When i try to hold AF button and Video button doesn't work. Do you have any idea why is that?
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography Год назад
Maybe the Sigma 35mm 1.4 isn't compatible with the Nikon AF-Fine-Tune Function.

Charles - I tried this with my Nikon D500 and both of my "go to" lens; 17-55, F2.8 and 70-200, F2.8. When pushing the AF/M and Record buttons simultaneously, I get an error message that states "Auto AF fine-tune is not available at current focus settings". Any idea how to correct the settings to get this to work? I have the camera in AF-S and single point focus with Auto ISO.

Tom, I don't know how you have your D500 set up, so I'd be taking wild guess's of why it's not working. But here's a link that goes into great detail of why you could be getting this message and how to fix it. www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3996435#forum-post-57667487

Hello Sir!!! Greetings from India!!! Sir, I fine tuned my Nikkor 200-500 on Nikon D500. The value I got is for 200mm +4.41 and on 500mm +3.75. So what should be the ideal value? Need your advise. Thanks & regards.
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography Год назад
What you need to do is add both numbers and then divide by 2. This should give you a fairly accurate focus at 200 and 500mm.
@GregHayhoe
@GregHayhoe 2 года назад
Does the camera know when you switch lenses and adjust automatically once the values have been saved? .I have mostly nikkor lenses.. As well, does this work for Sigma Lenses on D500? I have a 100-400mm Sigma and am struggling getting crisp shots.
@CharlesNPhotography

Yes, the camera know when you change lenses and you can make a profile for your Sigma lens

No AF Fine Tune is a utility that helps you tune your lens. Once you've finished that it. But you have tos ave the numbers that it gave you into a profile for your lens

Does it matter if this is done in RAW or jpeg? Sometimes jpeg adds corrections which affect distortion.

Why is AF fine tune needed in Live View where the best focusing is achieved? I thought the AF fine tune was more appropriate when using the viewfinder where the focusing system has to deal with the mirror and prism system. Can the D500 not do AF fine tune through the viewfinder?
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography 10 месяцев назад
AF fine Tune needs to be used in Live View as when you're looking through the viewfinder, there's a mirror in front of the sensor, so the camera cannot Fine-Tune the lens.

Do we need to manually adjust focus, or automatic one is fine? Just did the thing, and for 200-500 received 0 value right away, at 200. But for my 50mm 1.8f i got -7 to -10 . Shooted from distance 2-3 meters, is it OK?
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography 2 года назад
Every lens will be different, this is why you can setup multiple lens. Also remember that the lens may be accurate at 200mm, but off at 500mm.
@Filinozavr
@Filinozavr 2 года назад
@@CharlesNPhotography Yes I understand that. For 50mm lens I keep getting either straight 0 or high minus values like -6, -10. I don't know wheter it denotes something. I'm quite new to photography. Also, the tripod i use is quite crappy and unstable as well as my floor is mini-shaky (I figured). So, the hardest thing now is to understand when the problem is within my hands and where it is subject for service. I have no basis to compare) For example, i'm pairing 50 1.8 to my d850 and I don't know if such level of detail is good or not.

Hi, few months ago, I bought a new Nikon D7500 & a 18mm-300mm Zoom lens & a 35 mm Lens; I find the images shot using the 18-300mm Zoom lens are not that sharp even at f5.6 at 70mm / 80 mm focal length ( I found out from DXOMark website that this zoom lens is sharp at this focal length or less than 70 mm). Could you please advise what should I do?
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography 9 месяцев назад
Have you done a Focus Test of a subject at different focal lengths to see if the lens is sharper at a certain focal length than others. I would print a A4 page with a pattern and put it about 3 to 4 meters away at take photos at 18, 35, 70, 120, 180, 250 and 300. and see how sharp they are. If they're not sharp, then I'd use Auto AF-Fine Tune

So, are you saying every time you take a shot, you have to go into the menu and select the focal length-ok fine tune ON, and then shoot?…….By that time the Cheetah had long gone!!
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography 3 года назад
You do this only when you want to use the "Fine Tune" utility in the Menu.
