so funny I come across this today. Yesterday I just deleted aliases from my notes because I don't understand its use. Guess I'll have to put them back now. Thanks for explaining very clearly.

Been using Obsidian for a while now, and this has finally shown me the sense of using aliases. Thanks! Btw, if you don't see the aliases after you've selected the file, check that you have "use Wikilinks" selected in Editor settings. Took me a while to figure that out.

You nailed it again, Jonathan! When working w/all my properties, I kept seeing 'aliases' and 'cssclass' pop up as an option and I didn't know what aliases were - NOW I DO! Thanks again for teaching this newbie about the 'GOOD STUFFS' within Obsidian! EDIT: Yes, the "location tags" are an eye sore, they don't bother me too much, BUT it would be nice if there was an OPTION in Obsidian where it could be set to HIDE the location tags - that would solve that issue IMO. I am noticing that if I don't use an ALIAS after the location tag, the link _doesn't collapse e.g. "Welcome#^4600bf" ?? If I then add a pipe '|' character and then either use an alias OR simply retype "Welcome", or even "Hello XYZ", then the link collapses as expected? Perhaps this is a bug? I'm not sure...

Thanks for an excellent video...I was looking for a video on deep linking to share so your timing is impeccable 😁 Hopefully someone will pop out a CSS snippets or plugin that hides those codes in Live Edit then we'll all be happy using them.

Taking it to even the NEXT level still: You can link DIRECTLY to the Alias. When it starts popping up the suggestions of what to link for, it seems to prioritize aliases toward the top of the list (and will show what file it belongs to in smaller text under it). So in your example, you could type "[[Mr" and it should auto start suggesting the "Mr. Pritchard" alias with the associated file (so you can verify the correct file, multiple notes can have the same alias in the vault). Further it has a little 'link arrow' icon to the right to indicate it is an alias. Once selected, it will then fill the file/alias automatically so you never actually have to type the pipe character yourself. I also agree, the 'goofy' deep link is ugly and I avoid it as much as possible. I know WHY it does it (it needs a hard code reference to where you are linking like a bookmark, same function as the headers), but I still don't like it's looks.

Good video. I love Obsidian. I also love Asheville. My son went to college there. By the way, ‘|’ is called a ‘pipe’ key. Thanks!

What a small world! And thanks for the note; I had to look up what a pipe key is and then I understood what you meant! (I forget a lot of what I put in videos. Once it's here, I don't need to keep it in my brain!)

Another great intro! I'll be watching all your videos just to see your intros. (I wouldn't be surprised if they are more work than the rest of the video!) Both the alias and deep linking were new to me so thanks for the video! Any thoughts on doing creating a Dashboard homepage? (I haven't done one myself but I've seen other videos and they look cool.)

Fun fact: just typing --- (3 dashes) will also insert a properties interface. Note that it must be at the top of the note. Also fun fact: You don't even need to append the alias to the link [[Johnathan Pritchard |That Guy]]. If you have "That Guy" as an alias then you can simply link as [[That Guy]] and it will work exactly the same way.
@plus1creator
@plus1creator 3 месяца назад
Since Obsidian updated how they handle properties, I always go through the properties module and avoid trying to do it through code. Made a whole video about it!
@iAmPerflexed
@iAmPerflexed 3 месяца назад
@@plus1creator It inserts the same graphical interface you get from the module. The 3 dashes are basically just a shortcut instead of searching for the module. Try it, you'll see what I mean. You don't need to type it all out manually at all.

I use Aliases in my Astrophotography vault all the time. A great feature for me. So much easier to remember Horsehead Nebula instead of B33 or Barnard33 so I setup aliases for all the possible astro catalogs that contain a particular entity that interests me or that I've photographed. Were you aware that you can use the aliases directly to create links? If you typed in "[[Mr. P" in your video, it should bring up Jonathan Pritchard|Mr. Pritchard as one of the available links without having to type in [[Jonathon... and then use the "|" key to select the alias. Also, are you aware of Embedding Links? Not sure if you are, or if you have use for them, but you can preface a link with the ! (exclamation mark) and an entire note, or a deep link section of a note can be embedded in your current note. If you update the other note, the section you embedded will be updated as well. I use this to embed images from my reference library in multiple notes, and if I decide to change the reference image, all the other images are immediately updated. I also use it to embed details about stars and nebulas from a reference page into a notes I create for my photography sessions for a particular night. Thanks for sharing.

Embedding notes is one of those "useful but I didn't realize it" things, for sure. Took me too long to get around to using them; now I use them all over the place! Thanks for your comment!

If you do not like the link for the block, you can simply rename it to something you do like as long as you only use letters, numbers, and/or a hyphen. Go to the landing location (i.e. the target block) then "right-click" to call up the contextual menu and select rename link and change the link ID to Pritchard-complaint. Go back to the original file and you will find that the link in the original file has also been changed to Pritchard-complaint. Although this may not be what you desired, maybe it is more acceptable to you. If one desired to have an "Endnotes" page on a website instead of footnotes, this feature could be quite useful.

Yep, even with the "choose your own adventure" naming convention it doesn't get much use from me, but thanks for the suggestion; it might help someone in the future!

@@plus1creatoryou can also make some custom CSS rules to make those ^links disappear (with a display: none or make them just invisible by giving them the background color - they'll still be visible by selecting the text)

Great info. I've not used the # and ^ to create sublinks. But, may soon. The block link is interesting as I was using Logseq for about a year. At least it keeps the block identifiers hidden from normal view. But, since Obsidian works the same way on Mobile devices while Logseq doesn't (no plugins on mobile), I canned Logseq.

Deep linking is pretty cool, right; especially now that properties are more user-friendly. Gonna make so many aliases.
@plus1creator

Another detail is that you can assign an up carat link like ^link-goes-here instead of letting it auto-generate a random hash. Forgot to put that in.

If you don't like to see block id, you can make it invisible with css. I belive there were some snippets for this posted on forum.
