[How To] Use Popstarter With Fat PS2 Internal Hard Drive Tutorial 2016- Part 1 of 2

This is part 1 of a 2 part series where I will show you how to use Popstarter with the Fat PS2 using FMCB to use Ulaunchelf to access the necessary .ELF files. Part 1 will show you how to :
1) Rip PS1 games
2) Convert PS1 games
3) Where to get Popstarter files
4) How to format and prepare your PS2 internal hard drive
5) Replace your default BOOT.ELF file with the Popstarter version
In Part 2 video tutorial, I will show you how to transfer your PS1 games to the Fat PS2 hard drive using pfsshell and also how to run the PS1 games from the PS2 using ulaunchelf. Enjoy!

I notice some people are having trouble getting the replacement uLaunch ELF to work on the memory card and getting a black screen. I had the same problem. It turned out that there wasn't sufficient space on my memory card. The uLaunch ELF I was previously using was about 400KB. The new one is about 1000KB. If there is insufficient space to copy over the new one, it won't give any warning. It will partially overwrite and corrupt the old one, leaving you without a working uLaunch ELF. After I cleared some space and correctly copied the new one, the new uLaunch ELF worked.

i managed to get ulaunch working by downloading a 4.42d boot.elf and puttting it back in mc 1 but when ever I put the popstarter boot.elf it just stays in a blank black screen

Sadly Popstarter got low compatibility, especially with PAL titles :( Tried 10 games which where verified by MD5, and only twowhere working, I tried all compatibility options and fixes as suggested on the list.

Maybe its time to try something else like mechapwn, or if you got a real ps1 use freepsxboot or tonyhax

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Hello! Thank you, this is not needed, because I even got the the original games. It's just about the convenience, to not have the PS1 setup, next to the PS2, and because I have an HDD iand the expensive genuine Sony-Network/HDD-adapter with SATA conversion i n the PS2 for a reason. I hope there will be another breakthrough :)

Okay did the whole thing till the part where you copy the pops.elf to my mc01 and when I restart it and go back to ulaunchelf it just keeps goes black so...I am guessing I did something wrong

Project Phoenix Media Luckily I reinstalled it after finding out the problem. I have Popstarter working, but not in the APPS menu in OPL. It works though, lol

Yes but one thing, if you delete a game you mess up the partition table. Anyone got a solution for this?

in hdd0 / i have folders net/system/syscon /boot/ opl/ hdloader/ .... in boot there is only c8_launch.elf

Thanks for this tutorial. I was able to make vcd files, make a partition for pops on my hdd and transfered the games using pfsshell. But when I try to load a game I allways get "failed to load launchelf.cnf" I am running the latest version of freemcboot and the latest version of opl using an internal hdd for my ps2. Should I still bother with this tutorial or jump straight to the opl version? The only thing that does not work for me is the boot.elf file, when I install this, the file manager can not find the hdd anymore

ok as far as i understand .. you say in the video u have installed ulannch elf popstarter edition... how do i get there.? here it is as far as i can explain my problem.. at 9:24 i can copy boot.elf .. and MC0 is empty MC1 empty ... HDD0 has files in it.. .. i am on v4.42e_HDD

With pops can i use PS2 and PS1 games on the same hard drive? Or do i need a hard drive for each system?

I bought a maxdiypower ide to sata conversion kit for the network adapter and purchased a 1.5tb sata drive for it. If I wanted to have OPL ps2 games and popstarter games internally on the hd what would be the easiest method to do that? Do I used Winhiip? Is it alright to have one partition for the ps2 games and then two partitions for popstarter with the __.pops1 labeling? On the pops can I just format the drive as fat32 on the pc, add the label, and make them 128gb max per or do I have to format on the ps2? When it comes to this does it matter which one I create the partition for first? I think I'm up to 1.1 gb in ps2 games and 200 gb in ps1 games. Do you recommend using winhiip for 4gb+ ps2 games or is that ext2 and ext2 version of opl better for my isos? I have all the games ready (except for 4gb+ conversions) and just not sure what is the best way to get the hd partitioned up. Thanks for the help.

How do you remove the __.POPS partition? I decided I wanted to leave that space for ps2 games and run popstarter games off of USB but the remove option is greyed out for that partition.

Project Phoenix Media I've used the newest uLaunchelf, wLaunchelf and the 2tb edition ulaunchelf and they all have "remove" greyed out. I see in your video it is as well so is it not removable after you create it?

Hello, my HDD manager creates a +__.POPS partition. How can I remove the +? Rename didnt work. It appears every time.

Hello MegaEddy24 you have most likely sorted this but I had the same issue and it was the reason the PS1 games weren't loading. on this link bitbucket.org/ShaolinAssassin/popstarter-documentation-stuff/wiki/hdd-mode it says this Note : +__.POPS” is not correct. Use AKuHAK’s uLaunchELF build or uLE_kHn build to create a partition without +. I used uLE_kHn_20160723 and it created the partition correctly for me and worked fine. I have done this for future reference too incase someone has a similar issue.

i think the confusion is .. you are running free mcboot off a memory card.. and i am on FHDB this tutorial does not work.. i actually updated my fhdb noobie from 1.93 to 1.95 with the tool.. but there are still no files in the MC0

it seems to be a lot of work to get ps1 games installed on the hdd, i think just playing them from CD may be the quickest way, all of my ps2 systems have modchips so no funky patches, just burn the game and play it

yeah i think i would just use a ps3 with cfw and just rip my ps1 games to it, if someone wanted to load say 100 ps1 games using this method, it would take a year to get this done, im about to do a cooling mod to one of my 60gb ps3 consoles too keep it from ylod and just pack it full of ps1 and ps2 games, pros to this would be a console that has hdmi out, has wireless controllers and easy hdd storage options

For those that are lucky to have a working hackable PS3 with CFW like Rebug, I recommend using the PS3 to play PS2 and PS1 games as it's really simple to do. I just recently dusted off my PS2 FAT and got my self the adapter to connect an internal HDD, I followed the tutorials to get FMCB installed and working, installing PS3 games is a breeze, but I can't get my head around all the steps needed just to play PS1 games, it's doable but to be honest not worth the troubles I reckon, since the PS2 can play PS1 games if the PS2 is chipped. Why can't FMCB just launch PS1 ISO's, it would make life easier. After watching/reading a lot of tutorials on this topic, I decided that I'm not going to bother with PS1 games, and just install PS2 games. But great tutorial by the way, I'm sure this has helped many people :)

Mount the .CUE file to a virtual drive in Daemon tools and then rip the game from the virtual drive into a .bin/.cue with MagicIso.

I’m not sure if you’re still replying to comments on this, but every time I try to create my pops folder it adds a + to the beginning of it and it is screwing with my pop starter install. It won’t mount the pops folder on PFS. Any idea

Do you have the right version of ulaunchelf that is meant go to with popstarter? This should fix your issue when making partition.

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia it turns out that I was missing the pops folder inside of +opl Once I pasted it there, made sure I had popstarter.elf with my games and made sure there was also a pops.elf within commons, it began working

When i ripped a game from cd it work good with the cue2pops program but when i download a game from off the net it gives the error i mention earlier.. But thanks for the reply!!!

It works if you convert the file the way it is and then go back and rename if afterwards, then try adding the cue file to cue2pops, sounds like a pain in the ass but it works.

My HDD was formated using win hip sometime ago and all my PS2 games are on it. So I wanted to create a POPS partition with the remaining space.

I got a question. I am using a 1tb drive for my ps2 and yet when I try to create a pops partition it doesn't work. I have the exact same version of the launchelf.boot file and it always does it. When you seem to create it, it happens very fast and mine is very slow. I wonder if it might be because my hard drive is 4 times bigger or perhaps I have to format my drive since I cannot seem to be able to create a partition bigger than 6gb anymore :\

if that's the v4.42e_hdd_khn then yes, I got it. According to the popstarter HDD manager is says I have used 900gb/950gb, and I got roughly 47gb left. I want to create a 40gb partition but it just doesn't let me. It does work when I make a much smaller partition like 4gb but that defeats the purpose since I constantly have to delete and add files.

Actually your hdd was fragmented, just like mine. I can see i have 20 gb of free space, but when i try to create a partition, it is not possible because is almost like this space is blocked. (When you delete a game, the space left is fragmented and you can install another game over it, but you cannot create a partition with this same space hahahaha) If i want to create a partition now, i'll have to format my hdd and start from zero. I discovered it today and i am thinkig about format my hdd, because i really want install ps1 games on it

its so extreme complicated and takes so much time. I will stay by usb method. mhh thats sad, I tought I haveto just create a partition move my usb hdd one by one and can run the games. with this many partitions and files it takes hours to add 4-5 games naaaww I don'T like :/

these instructions were very unclear as to how to add VCD files . you didnt even mention using pfsshell *note a hell of alot easier then wating forever doing it on ulaunch. overall crappy tutorial , recommend using the forums

1) Get the Linux install 2) Put it on an xbox memory card 3) Copy it to the internal hard drive 4) Get an early copy of MechAssault, put the disc in the xbox, start the game 5) Load save game 6) You're done

Yo, Versatile. I did multiple Google searches for those two files and I have scoured every single web page I could find and they either don't exist or I'm retarded lol. I'm guessing that shit is pretty touch and go when it comes to legality. If you can help me out man I'd appreciate it. My email is aquaticsolstice@gmail.com. I just got into modding my PS2 and I spend like the past two days pulling my hair out trying to figure this stuff out. I bought a Seagate Barricuda 2TB and man was that a whole mess in and of itself just to get the hard drive convertered to Sony format. But, I was able to do it and I even have PS2 games on the HDD now (though I can't get the PAL games to work, I understand why though) (I need to find a way to convert PAL to NTSC). So I wanna test out PSX because well that was really my main reason for modding it anyway but damn it ain't easy for me. Thanks bro.
