Thanks--very helpful and very well organized, and perfect for someone like me who is strong at Excel and regular pivot tables but found the whole UI for Power Pivot very opaque. Thanks could be useful. I’m used to performing all the data relationships & queries in Access, then pulling results into Excel for analysis. I’ve also learned BI, which does everything for you but has its own drawbacks. So this is something else I’ll have to pick up. Excellent presentation, very clear & understandable!

Great video as always. My feedback to enrich the experience would be to provide 2 sample data sets with written instruction steps on their own regarding the second data set. This way, when we're following along, we do the first data set by visually following your steps. Next, we practically apply our newly learn't knowledge in a semi-supervised (stand alone instruction steps) format, allowing us to build muscle memory without going from the shallow end (supervised) right into the deep end (unsupervised). I've been trying to get around to learning and actually using Power Pivot, and this is great tutorial for the basics. The only issue I have with examples like this is that it's good for theory, but not for practical use. In the real world, each order would have to be frozen in time, in effect. The costs in the product table might apply to a few orders when the invoices were created, but costs and selling prices change all the time. Same with customer address info. Each order when it's complete would have to have all the information saved in static tables with costs, selling prices, and customer data as permanent info attached to that table, since you could never rely again on the product table as a source of accurate info for that particular invoice. Still, this is good for learning how table relationships work and how data models are created.

I can't really thank you enough for this video! I'm a huge "Power Excel" fan and to this day I would still rather work my data in Power Pivot than in Power BI. It would need a revamp from Microsoft, but I guess this would get in the way of selling Power BI as the only viable BI solution out there 😉 This is one beautiful beginner tutorial, you're a great communicator!

Awesome Kevin. I have Excel 2016 Professional and when I copied the Cookie Table into excel and added to the data model and mapped it in Relationship Diagram as you have shown, Related function does not pull cookie type cost and revenue, but I can see them in the formula. Instead of copying and adding to data model, I have added cookie type to the model by browsing the excel and I have exactly what you have done.
