Just when we thought computers were catching up to the demands of HD back in 2005, along came 4K, 6K, 8K and 12K.
Even if you're on a new M2 Mac, it's not going to process live 8K footage on your timeline. And the M1's will cough on 4K RAW codecs.
The good news? Resolve has things like render cache, optimized media and proxy files that make it all doable.
And it's so much easier than it used to be. Trust me on that!
In this lesson we cover render cache and optimized media. If you're looking for the proxy file lesson, here it is:

Hey man! Appreciate your kind words. Happy to hear they’re not too much of a pain for PC users! Are you a filmmaker?

You are truly welcome. And no, not a filmmaker. Just started playing around with Resolve. It is quite amazing. Who knows what will come of it. I have produced music as a hobby on a DAW. It's amazing how that has helped me understand resolve so much quicker.

About render in place - i think another usage would be if you let's say have a huge hour footage and you only need about 5 seconds from this video file. You can render it in place and delete the original file to save space.
@writedirect
@writedirect 4 месяца назад
Good idea. As long as the render settings are set correctly, quality wise. It would be a bummer to render it at a low quality and delete the file only to realize later. But I never thought of it for that purpose! Thx!

A better way would be to use media management. Trim the clip to what u want then use MM to save new files. You will retain all the data in the file. It's literally blackmagic.

After using DaVinci for about a month I have a wish for next version updates: guys, remove most of the setting options, leave only what every editor would set up as optimal settings. It is just insane how many settings are there, and majority of them is not that easy to figure out. For example, proxy settings and sound settings, the latter should not have too many settings in davinchi project or general settings. Most sound settings are redundant. In pr pro i hardly ever accessed much sound settings and never had issues in the final file. In DaVinci i already had issues with the final file. Especially after it's been already uploaded. DaVinci normalized my sound track to -24dB whatever units it has to be, instead of -14 dB, but on pc the music track sounds fine, on RU-vid it is way lower. Again, with pr pro i never had issues with audio settings, nor with project and render settings.

I understand your frustration. Going from one NLE to another always has bumps in the road. I can tell you Resolve is really well thought out. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best I’ve used. I have some lessons on Fairlight that might help you a lot with the audio stuff. Most Annelise don’t include a DAW like this. So with that you’re going to have more settings to deal with. When I cut in Avid, I had to export everything to pro tools. Massive pain. Now I can do it all in a single app. But you have to understand it or it will be frustrating.

I use a one terabyte internal drive without problem. But I’m not keeping any cache files or media on the drive. You must have all of that on external storage. Hook up to thunderbolt three or faster. You need a lot of GPU cores and ram as well.

Wait so render cache does not work if you're using optimised media? Do you HAVE to turn that off?
@writedirect
@writedirect 2 месяца назад
Sorry for my late reply here! Render cache is still going to cache some things when using optimized media. However, I'm not sure it will cache your actual clips. But honestly haven't even tried combining the two. Sort of look at them as mutually exclusive. But any FX, etc that you do would be different. If you want to use render cache, I'd not use optimized media.

Great video ! I have a question . My mac m1 takes about 6 hours to deliver a 90’ timeline . Heavy Color , grain and NR in it . Any advice on how should I proceed ? Files are 6k , ProRes 4:2:2 , edit Color and delivery in 4K . Should I use render cache in the delivery format (4:2:2Hq) and use render cache to the delivery , or something else ? Thank you 🙏
@writedirect
@writedirect 4 месяца назад
Hey, thanks man! Yes, if you check "use render cached images" under Advanced on the Delivery Page, it will speed up a lot. HOWEVER...make sure your project settings are in line for this. Under Master Settings > Optimized Media and Render Cache > make sure you're not rendering out in a lower quality. Otherwise that export is gonna take a hit that you don't want.

Why can I not save in the local drive?
@writedirect
@writedirect 6 дней назад
You can. I typically just keep things off my system drive and use that for OS only. Outside of that just watch disk space. The cache folders get large fast.

Hi, please help! I keep looking around for tutorials and i dont understand one thing . Why the hell does it keep re-rendering ( re-caching ... pre-rendering....re-whatever-the-f*** u wanna call it ) almost every clip in my timeline, everytime i move anything or edit any other clip or just play it in fullscreen and come back ? Its goddamn stupid, been trying for 3 days and cant figure it out and its pissing me off... 10 yrs in premiere btw ... You select what u want to pre-render, it goes from red to green, u never have to touch it unless u work on that exact clip again, and it plays buttersmooth everytime. Here with "smart render cache " it Re-re-re-renders it everytime i move anything .... WHY !?
@writedirect
@writedirect 9 месяцев назад
It’s because you’re letting Resolve auto render. Go to playback and switch the render cache to user mode. Then, for example, on the color page, you can right click on a node and render that single node and Resolve will leave everything else alone.
@VideoLABFilms
@VideoLABFilms 9 месяцев назад
@@writedirect The problem is not the color page, its speed ramping, stabilizing ,using the transform tools and doing stuff in the edit page or combining it with stuff on the fusion page. Even with render cache set on user it sometimes wants to put a blue bar over certain things that appears and disappears randomly and ofc makes it stutter . problem no 1 .Which of the right click options is the (premiere) render one ? Because none of them seems to actually make the bar blue and keep it blue forever except if i do a render in place which will downgrade the quality and if i want to change something later on ,i have to go through a lot. problem no 2 . Is there a way to render it in a way so it stays rendered no matter which workspace u added changes from ? (3 diff workspaces each with their own way of rendering .....just why ? ) problem no 3. crackling sounds on audio ... like it doesnt have it rendered.... I think they are related somehow.
@writedirect
@writedirect 9 месяцев назад
@@VideoLABFilms okay try this: add stuff from various clips in the timeline. Select them, right-click and look for Render Cache Fusion Output. Set that to "on" from auto. Then leave the timeline idle. Resolve will do a render that should be a little more bullet proof...you'll just have to try it and see. The reason for various page renders IMO is simply due to the fact that we're combining a lot into a single app/interface. The color page needs more granular rendering than the edit page, etc. Not saying it's perfect, but that's my two cents. See if the Fusion option helps.
@JohnnyMotel99

Here's a problem I have yet to find a solution for. I have everything set up for render cache as you, but if I close a project or quit and restart Resolve, the timeline is blue for a second but then it goes red and it sets off rendering.
@writedirect
@writedirect 2 месяца назад
Weird...what version of Resolve are you on? Also, where are you storing your cache files? I'd get on the latest -- even a 19 beta as that's been stable for me. And store your cache files on an external SSD or something and see if it changes.

Does optimised media effect on my final render also..??
@writedirect
@writedirect 9 месяцев назад
When you're on the Deliver Page (Shift 8) in Resolve, under Advanced Settings you can check or uncheck use optimized media. However, I'd disable optimized media before any grading as well. Uncheck Menu > Playback > Use Optimized Media if Available

Hi guys Could you tell me if I will delete render cache from my current project, then does it affect it somehow? Like make some media in timeline off?
@writedirect
@writedirect 8 месяцев назад
If you delete cache manually it might do that momentarily. Just highlight the clips and clear the cache from the playback menu that way. It will never permanently affect media status. But I have seen it do what you’re talking about.
