How to Use SDI Ports Safely

I always see a bunch of people on set who don't know this trick and they just always risk ruining the SDI port. It's really annoying when someone blows out an SDI port. I've had shoots where we had 4 SDI ports on a Phantom Flex 4K and only one of them was working. (and it was the clean feed...)

IMO, people are totally justified blaming the manufacturer. Engineers have known about this issue for how long, and they can't put a $1 isolation relay in my $XXXX camera why? Give me a break.

Yeah, totally agree! I mean there must be a reason I'm not an engineer, but it's weird, cause it's the same situation on +100k Arris and Phantoms. I've used Phantom Flex 4Ks before where 2 out of 3 SDI ports were blown out.

Ive been curious about if the batteries die? Do you just treat that like a battery swap
@marcellittle
@marcellittle 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, whenever I do a battery swap I always disconnect and then reconnect my SDI cable (the only time you don't have to do it is when it's just a simple power down)

@@marcellittle but if the battery dies it’s essentially a power down state?

If I want to turn off the camera and monitor to save energy, without disconnecting the batteries, and then turn it on again after a while. Should I still follow the order of connecting/disconnecting the SDI cable, or is it only necessary when the power supply is physically disconnected? Thanks!

Technically no, you don't need to disconnect the SDI cable when you just power off without removing the powersource, but I still like to do it to deepen that muscle memory. At the end of the day it's up to you.

@@marcellittle What about hot swapping on the Komodo? Unplug the SDI first, hot swap, then plug back?

what is the sdi for?

SDI is for the video feed on cinema cameras, cheaper cameras usually use HDMI instead. They work in very different ways and SDI can be a lot more fragile, but ultimately it's a better and higher quality connection for these cameras.
