Thankyou Kevin. I thought this was an excellent, straight forward and easy to understand for those not too adept at using different type apps (some of my family). I wish you had included that this was military encrypted as this is what I've been told. That would be important to many. (please correct me if I've been misinformed) CHEERS ♥
Kevin, did I hear correctly, to use signal private does the person I'm calling have to have downloaded the signal app? My mobile carrier is virgin mobile, part of my plan has unlimited data, so I think I would not have any charges, please correct me if I'm wrong, thanks. :)
Signal's big differentiator from other messaging apps is its focus on privacy and security. Signal is open source. This means that you and others can review the code to verify their security and privacy claims. There's no tracking or metadata collected about you or your contacts. With WhatsApp, Viber, Messenger, and others, you have to take them for their word.
Nelson here, thank you for the warm welcome! I'm new to professional RU-vid but Kevin is showing me the ropes :) Kevin has more topics he wants to cover than he has the time for, so I may be able to help him with that in the future.
@@skyfaller Hey, no need to thank me. You did an amazing job out there for your very first video. Kevin did a good job in giving you this video. Kevin & Nelson good job. :)))
For security reason, I am using Signal instead of WhatsApp or Telegram. Works really great. The only thing is that notifications, although enabled do not show. Has anybody noticed this bug and found a solution?
@@R_3079 I personally only use Signal now. It is open-source and does not track or use any data and those of your contacts! WhatsApp is owned by META, hence Facebook, Insta, etc are using your data and vice-versa. It was a very conscious choice for me to move away from WhatsApp and may not apply to everybody.
But didn’t it require you to give people your cell phone number out? That’s the problem I have with it. Those other apps have the ability to find you by a name not a number
Telegram was great when it started, but people report problems now. And they don't encrypt communications. And they're owned by a giant social media company now.
Amazing app. Been trying to convince my friends and family to switch over. Messenger and iMessage are such difficult competition. I will continue to use Signal, though.
@@brandonsanchez9043 The app is made by a non-profit company and is open source. It’s just me convincing people to use a messaging platform that does not sell data
@@hoshikuzuvenus hmm. Non-profit you say. By tax standards yes. They pay no taxes and rely on donations. Like a church. The company started with a 50 million dollar loan and has increased to over 100 million. How do you think they pay back those loans?
@@brandonsanchez9043 you just answered your own question. They maintain the app using donations. The software is open source. If it was illicitly stealing and selling user information, it would be caught by the community
@@hoshikuzuvenus Well I feel foolish. They are gonna get over 100 million in donations. To break even. So no one makes a dime while working on this app day in and day out. Such great ppl.
Other users have to be on Signal. It's the same situation with other apps like Messenger, Viber, Telegram, etc. where all your contacts have to be in the same ecosystem.
@@ValdezJu that's the exception that proves the rule. There's lot's of things that can't be sent Messenger to Apple, it's not perfect. You just said "it's useless to me..." what more clarification do you need? It's useless to you. give it up.
Hi, I'm trying to save some photos from chats, but although the auto-download is set for WI-FI and Cellular, they are not saved locally. There is also no button to download them manually. Any ideas?
When I hit the call button i can hear the ph ringing at my end but the receiver's ph won't. When someone calls me i don't hear ring. I looked at settings. There's no info there to help. If you would can you touch bases on this subject. Thx
I installed signal today and there is not a screen which looks like the one in your video. I can't find anything that says add photo in the getting started section.,
Hi i wasn't sure if you can help me out a little. I talk to this one person a lot on Signal. Sometimes it says Delivered right away, but usually it just says Sent for so long like a few hours and then it'll say Delivered. What does that mean? And I know that their phone is on cause they are active on Facebook.
I had problems installing Signal because installation uses two different PINs, one for Signal and one for the phone Lock Screen. That confused me, but I managed to get Signal installed on both mobile and laptop devices. I have friends who are on Signal, but I have no idea how to find them. I know the phone number of the group leader. I think the problem is not giving Signal access to my Contacts. I don't want to use Signal for any of my Contacts, just for a specific group of friends.
If a guy from TikTok asks me to download this app shouldn’t I be suspicious because it requires you to share your number (which I never give out) and all these features are available on your phone EXCEPT the disappearing thing.
Not sure if this is still relevant to you or if you or the folks in your replies are still looking for explanation but I will provide one as well as my 2 cents. The reason why Signal is being recommended to you even though it requires a number and shares features with most other messaging apps is because of Privacy. Other messaging apps either do not encrypt the texts you send, or they soft encrypt, meaning they can still decrypt it themselves since they're the ones who designed both lock and key. This leads to service providers like Google using messaging data to continue to build your AdSense identity, which is a profile that they have built of you over the years that tells them your preferences in addition to other personally identifiable data so that they can sell ads and then sell you things that are relevant to you (ever talked about something randomly and seen it pop up in an ad a short while later? Thats thanks to the level of spying they do). When you use signal, you provide your number as your username. This is similar to how WhatsApp works. WhatsApp also claims to be End To End Encrypted, meaning Facebook should not be able to harvest data from WhatsApp. However, recently the EU has flagged them to stop them from collecting WhatsApp data and combining it with the data acquired from other apps like Facebook and Instagram to build Facebook Ad Profiles of its users. This means they have been fudging the truth or just lying to us. Signal is also End to End Encrypted, but on top of that, this can be and has been verified by the general public. Signal is an Open Source program, meaning that the code behind the app is visible to anyone who wishes to read it. This also means that members of the tech community, which have a high concentration of off-duty industry professionals, look at this code for free to ensure that the Signal foundation is not lying to us. Data privacy is becoming an increasingly important issue that we must all tackle. The rate of data breaches is increasing, meaning that the chances of your data ending up in wrong hands is also increasing. Breaches can include things as sensitive as your SSN. In the case of Google, if youre using google messages, the most sensitive data that can leak is Name, Number, Addresses and contact information. If youre using iMessage or an Apple device in general, the likelihood is lower but still present. They are much much better about privacy and they have been independently verified to be so, even though their software is not Open Source like Signal. If youre an iMessage user, it is fine to continue to do so, as long as you know that blue bubbles are verifiably end to end encrypted, and green bubbles are not. If you send and receive a lot of green bubble messages, it's advised to switch to a platform like signal. Let me know if you have questions. Cheers
@cslsecure4163 I was researching this today. It doesn't save your info, so no central server. No server, privacy is always encrypted each end. No middle man hack attack
Hi Nelson, thank you for the clear Signal user manual. I have a question: could you tell me whether Signal can be configured to support, for example, 2 devices under one account? The second question is whether I can use Signal to answer phone calls that come to my phone number, I mean just answering call ?
Thanks KS for the Signal tutorial. I am looking to enhance my Signal app with new features. Where would I find developers that know the Open Source platform well that can I contract for changes to the app? Can't seem to find similar on the Signal Messenger site. Thanks!
I have someone in Canada I need to text to but I don't want to loose my messaging app that I currently use is that possible. Is Signal even available in Canada?
I believe Apple is already providing end to end encryption. This might be useful for people using Android devices, or dumb enough to use Facebook messenger, otherwise what’s the point?
Are all these new presenters just newly created AI Chatbots? Everything is doubtful now. Do all of your contacts need to download Signal also? Seems like just another friction point.
So what is the catch?. My reason. I've been talking to someone on Quora and they requested to change to Signal. With my cautious ways I am wondering why. Any answers appreciated thanks.
Signal works well on my Samsung Android tablet, but for some reason I can't get it to work on my PC? I've tried several times with no luck! Can you tell me why???
My question is...if i put a story on signal...will that send a notification or mssgs to my contact that I have posted a story? Plz tell me...cause i do not want to send notification or text to anyone...so is it like whatsapp only?
When I try to send a 2 or 3 minute video to my signal grout I am presented with a too large file but I am able to send the same video to all my friends on messenger. This just started about a week ago. Any help for me ?
This actually happens relatively frequently, but Signal doesn't really have any data on their servers that they can access, so the government gets basically nothing: signal.org/bigbrother/ "The only information Signal maintains[...] is the time of account creation and the date of the account’s last connection to Signal servers. That is all."
@@KevinStratvert Interesting how Signal's link about the topic says "bigbrother". What I really want to know is why the idea of accessing messaging data and metadata even exists. It's like having strangers open your paper mail, reading its contents, and sealing the mail back up without you knowing. Aren't messages supposed to be private (hence Signal)?
Hi, can you help me how to add up people from different country? I'm from Philippines and I can't add up people from US in Signal app. When I start to type the numbers the "user not a signal user" appears.
I believe they show the pin reminder prompt periodically so you remember your pin. If you forget your pin, since it’s all encrypted, there’s no way to recover except just starting from scratch.
Hi Kevin. I have an android phone and lately the messages are loaded so very slow. At times, I received a notification and at the same time it would say checking for messages. Could you help please? Thank you
