In this quick 'How To Use' video Protoculture takes a look at one of his favourite compressor plugins the SPL Iron.
Inspired by vintage compressors, Iron has the 'Vari-Mu' design but with the innovative implementation of a parallel dual-tube circuit. With a ton of options, this compressor is as much at home on the mastering chain as it is on subgroups or individual signals, like vocals, bass, guitar, strings, etc.

Best video on this plugin out there! Finally, some modern music, not old 80's music. I can actually hear what this plugin is doing.

On point. Been having this compressor for a while, and just kinda using the presets. Realized I'm at the beginning of even understanding this software.

I feel like when it was bypassed, there was too much sidechain ducking on the track, and no glue. When Iron was in, it glued the whole track nicely whilst retaining some of the sidechain EDM sound. First time I tried this plugin on the trial, I couldn't hear anything. Will definitely buy now!

I always thought the tube bias control related to low/mid/high frequency bias rather than intensity?

Could also be that he is listening to the raw uncompressed audio and we get 192 kbps if we are on 720p or above.

i like this compressor , and i see is ver stable for my cpu not the shadow hills . it's just a detail but for a mastering i'm not engeneer and it's not possible to buy all the compressor . Have got a ryzen 5 2600 and when i do the mastering with my stems it's limit to crash . YeS i prefere IRON SPL BECAUSE IN RED THE SOUND IS BETTER . Thanks i don't understand what is it the middle of this compressor before a look your vidéo.

Why does the plug-in Dr show so much aliasing on this particular comp? It is weird because Bx stuff tends to do a decent enough job with their stuff. Was this coded by SPL themselves? Or Dirk and his team? Anyone know?

The tube bias control acts as a ratio control. This can be checked in plugin doctor.

Here is a small example; If it is in Stereo, then even if the Left signal only crosses threshold, the compressor will act upon both Left and Right signals and compress them. In Dual mono, if Left signal crosses threshold, then only left signal will be compressed. So dual mono is like, the stereo signal comes in, gets split into Left and Right. Left signal goes to the sidechain for left compressor and right signal goes to the sidechain of right compressor [Sidechain actually means the detection circuitry]

@@philjohnston1064 Yes, partly it's that this guy mumbles A LOT, but also that mic is boomy, and doesn't handle plosives well. Now maybe it's partly his mic technique, he doesn't speak clearly and gets really close. But no, either way it doesn't sound good. Here's a much more professional sounding example. The VO is speaking clearly, the mic sounds good, and the volume balance between and VO and the music is good.
