Foley-Belsaw was my first locksmith school (1996). They used to have a location down the road me. I’ve had two cradles. The first one (red) wore out so bought another (black) and it broke on the first Smartkey I used it on. The spring pin at the bottom of the cradle bends and the misalignment wrecks the reset. I found a way to fix it. But at the moment the comb trick wasn’t working (plastic comb) so I bought the resetter and it’s always nice to have as a backup.

I have all of them. The cradle is definitely faster and easier, but just in case it breaks, I have the Better Resetter. Technically, you don't need any special tools, you can disassemble the cylinder, align everything for setting it to a new key manually... But the purpose specific tools are a whole lot less of a hassle. Foley Belsaw is a great outfit. I started out with their locksmith course many years ago. I still use the key machine that came with the course.

Thanks for all the info I love to hear the backstory on this stuff. I have removed the cylinders and disassembled them but it’s horrible torture I mean horrible I strongly suggest you use a tool like this or a comb or even a lice comb will work versus disassembling this particular, SC1 cylinder.

@@doorandlocktips Yeah, I definitely prefer having proper tools, especially if there's a bunch of them. As you said, the Schlage ones are rarely seen. If I recall, they got into a spot of bother because their design was so similar to Kwikset's. I've only come across a Schlage smartkey once. I honestly prefer pin tumbler locks in general. For those, Schlage is definitely a better build quality, and more pick resistant. For smartkey, I think Kwikset has got the market stitched up.

I agree. The tools that are made to do the job is the way to go. I just made videos to grab the audience on stupid stuff they could use that’s all.

Take the lock back to the box store tell them you lost the key they’ll give you a replacement lock

yup. I do it all the time. It's a little more cumbersome for me (because I'm klutzy) working the wafers one at a time, but it definitely works!

Now what's the purpose of resetting it? What will cause it that you have to reset it?

If you don’t reset it properly with the key, you have to take the cylinder apart and reset the cylinder another way this way

@@doorandlocktips the door guy installed a lock and the builder lost the key and the new homeowner moved in on Monday. You can pull the lock but don't have an original key

Take the lock off and go back to the box store . Tell them you lost the key they’ll give you a new lock problem over.😂

Don’t quote me on this, but I think you can use it as a back scratcher, an eyebrow comb, and a little modification a deep, cleaning toothbrush, but don’t quote me on it tehee🙀🥰

@@doorandlocktips well, now that I see how versatile it is…it’s clearly underpriced. Seriously though, that’s a $1 piece of metal, and if it’s handmade then the producer is a fool for being so inefficient. There is nothing about this tool that is worth the price.

You should buy one and see if you say the same thing after you have it I think you change your mind all Lock and Door Hardware tools are task specific and definitely this was one of a kind in that it can do two tasks at once one for kwikset one for Schlage in fact, a person should have several of these in their toolboxes just in case you can’t find one that’s what I’ve done I mean the difference between you have a tool to do the job and not having one and having to drive all the way back to your shop to get it is expensive
