If you try to engrave through the numbered template/stencil, you'll destroy it. Use the template/stencil and a pencil to write your word/name, then use the engraver ✏
Did you all know that you can use the dremel engraver with a hammer bit to set jewellery? So far I've made a needle burnisher, a brass bezel pusher and a normal anvil. So far I've set opals, topaz, turquoise and bezels of various thicknesses. For thicker bezels you need to bevel the edge and put it on the mad barsteward setting. Just don't hit the stone!! Also great for texturing silver too!
You can use the engraving bits in your Dremel and Dremel flex shaft without purchasing the attachment. It’s not necessary. Engraved many things with them
I have one. They're *LOUD* Kind of annoying when you want to relax and zone out on a project. I have honeywell ear protection. Regular ear plugs work too though
i just bought the DREMEL 290 and have some very nice results engraving the names of my horses in wood first and then burning the letters. Great stuff and thank you for you easy to understand video demonstration. You have opened another world to me!
Hey Thanks very much for your Demo! I just purchased a box of tools in an on-line auction for cheap, and this New Dremel Engraver happened to be amongt the Lot. I am looking forward to experimenting with it👍😉🇨🇦
yeah, what the fella below my comment said. sure the vibration of the engraver is gonna make the rotary tool bit you used make a mark, as they are usually a hardened steel or diamond abrasive coated. but you need various shapes of carbide steel or tool steel engraving tips, more similar to what you started with. . my Dad started me out with one of those electric engravers and a sheet of glass tracing out a wildlife scene. Now I use my rotary tools almost daily.
From experience, I found that the stencil is draw your letters with a marker first and then follow with the engraver. You could also try trimming the last five and a half minutes of dead video of the end. The only thin I learnt from this video was that the engraving bits have common diameter shanks.
My Drexel bit did not come attached and when I screw it in the small nail thingy does not screw in the bit all the way preventing me to secure the bit. What do I do?.
Ugh same! That is literally my issue right now… i don’t even think my bit goes down enough for me to try an screw it tight if I wanted... not to mention the incredibly small screw I had to break tweezers to Tighten/untighten it! Did you ever end up finding out what you can do? Lol.. I’m aware your comment is from 2 years ago 😩🥲
Was tossing up between the Engraver 290-1 and the Stylo 2050-15. For engraving metal, glass, wood, plastic and general purpose if needed. Anyone got any thoughts? Stylo is a bit more expensive but seems to be worth it for the extra versatility
Dremel works on metal, glass, wood, and plastic! If you want to engrave on metal though, you need a diamond-tipped bit for best results (since diamond is much harder than metal, it gets deeper more precise cuts). I got a used 1980’s Dremel 290 off Ebay, since it is a lot sturdier than the newer ones but the modern bits still fit the old dremels.
Thanks for sharing this video. I bought exactly the same tool about 8 months ago. Due to other obligations I finally had time to try it out only 2 months ago. It's a pity I didn't watch this video before. I'm quite disappointed in the tool. It is very loud. I did not manage to put the tip in the template. The characters in the template are to small. My hands are not stable enough to make free handed letters or numbers. I'll need a lot of practising for that. But I'll try again, thanks to your video.
Another use of this Engraver is to clean up the carbon deposit of push button tactile switches. Pour some 100% alcohol and tap the switch with the vibrating engraver. It will remove the carbon dirt from the surface inside.
I just bought one today & when I put the tip in & tighten the set screw, the set screw sticks out a tiny bit, hitting the black plastic housing.. suggestions?
Any word on how well this works on hard metals? I've got a project where I'd need to engrave some words into a tempered steel pipe, and I'd appreciate any feedback before I buy the thing. Thanks.
I haven't tried on hard metals yet. You may be better off using the rotary tool with an etching diamond bit. Looks like I need to make a vid on etching hard metals, thanks for the idea.
TheNotoriousCheeto by hard metals I'm guessing you want to engrave like Ratchets, Sockets or wrenches? Because I bought this to engrave my tools and the ones I just mentioned are I guess made of hard metals. But he's right on probably being better off buying a rotary tool with a diamond bit, I'm about to buy one right now. This engraver works but on softer materials. I have snap on wrenches and socket ratchets, on chrome it does leave clean lines but the lines are so thin you kinda have to do alot of passes to make it thicker. Otherwise it just leaves real skinny thin lines barely visible. And for my impact Sockets I tried it on my Snap On, Mac, and Cornwell impact Sockets and it didn't really leave a mark like you'd probably hoped or imagined it would leave. After some use and getting dirty the engraving on the impact Sockets faded so I'd have to go over the engraved letters over and over, waste of time. I'm hopping I have better results with the rotary and diamond bit
yes, on metals, it's important to match the speed of the engraver to the hardness of the metal. The speed gauge is 1 to 5. Slowest to fastest. And to your particular project. I like to engrave my name on tools I own, like machinists do, and find this tool quite impressive. Depending on the softness/hardness of the metal the tip will move faster or slower...and deeper. Straight lines are easy while curves are a bit challenging. I think it may have to do with the position of the nib in relation to the angle of the grip. It doesn't respond like a pen does...so you can't use that same approach. The best results happen with the engraving nib perpendicular to the surface of the metal...especially with curved letters or shapes. I like the idea of writing the letters/shapes first and then going over it..kinda like a tattoo... Freehanding it on metal is a risk... because similarly, it's permanent. Use a marker first to lay it out first!!
Brer Rabbit, I don’t have one of these, but both my dad and I have Dremel Rotary tools, and the engraving bits on them work more to sand a different texture into a surface, or maybe cut it into wood, but if you were working on metal, and trying to etch something deep enough to then fill with an inlay, it probably won’t work.
This tool isnt designed to go deep but to etch an object. If you are wanting to go deep then think about using a Dremel type tool. Thanks for watching.
get your answer searching the tech specs for this specific tool... thats it. your problem has multi factor causes. so. better get a good google search for that and dont ask to a guy that used ROTARY TOOL SHAFTS INTO A VIBRATING ENGRAVER HAHAHAHA
I just picked up hand held engraver machine I can draw I like to lightly sketch out a on what I'm going to engrave on I did a monkey wrench harden steel and it worked on it just to try it out for the first time. I think I will put a picture in a glass cup and engrave on it. I bought some 16 oz stainless steel cups to engrave and put something in them and give them away as gifts
Its noisy, veery much. Also powerful. You cant make a mistake, otherwise the whole design/drawn its done for. And did i said how much noise does it makes?
The bit should be attached when purchased. In the video you will see how to change the bits if needed. The speed and pressure will be determined on what material is being engraved. My best suggestion is to try out different techniques that will fit your matewrial, hand strength and tool speed.
Just bought and used mine for the first time to engrave glass.....awful. Chips flying everywhere, very aggressive on the surfaces and spoiled the piece. It's ok for wood, bone and antler but a rotary tool is still much better, especially with detailed work. Buyer's remorse for me
You just showed me that I got srewed , I had a dremel tool but it was hand held never said a word about engraving on glass . So I ask a place do they sale anything that carves glass? YES it is calld Cal-Hawk 13W Electric Engraver , but it comes with 1 bit only so I doyou have replacement bits ? no we only sale Dremel bits thisis a engraver . I call alot of places no one has onesthat carve on glass . You have the same tool in your hand knob on side too same color . ONLY DIFFERENCE IS MINE DIDN'T HAVE TIP COVER AND CAME WITH 2 PLASTIC , 1 IS LETTERS 1 SHAPES . SO IT IS A DREMEL ENEV IF IT DONT SAY SO ON THE BOX , NOW THAT GIVES ME 3 DREMELS , shame craft store said no lowes said no and hardwear place i got it from didn't have enough sence to no it was still a dermel ,thank you
This thing is garbage. I’ve purchased two on Amazon and I don’t understand how you secure the bit when the bit doesn’t go all the way into the shaft so that the screw can secure it.
You just need to take the screw out on the end, drop the bit in, then tighten the tiny screw. it does drop in when you look in the side after you take the screw out
On mine the carbide tip that came with it went all the way in so that you could easily secure it w/the set screw. The diamond bit was too large/thick and would not go in far enough to reach the set screw. Poor quality control on the sizing of bits. Returned mine.@@eyeofsaurona2345
If you are engraving metal, your video is missing the most important point of this tool. It can use engraver bits used by pro engravers! Yes the methods and burrs you use give a poor amateurish look to engravings you use. Look for GRS gravers on Amazon. True the gravers will cost more the the Dremel Graver but on the plus side you don't spend $1000s of dollars on GRS pneumatic handles for the gravers.
So I got the new one. You would think they would give you a screw driver to make the chuck work. lol Back to the store to get one. BS And to think they said drive throughs were the problem with smog. Dumb crap like this. I see it every weir. Bad review. Get it together. People remember stuff like this.
