How to Use the Mattress Stitch for Side Seams | Crochet Tutorial 

The needle placement, or lack thereof, is something I noticed in the videos I watched on this topic as well. It was something I had to play with a lot to figure out, especially on the different types of stitches since their posts are all different sizes. Regarding the right sides, you are correct. You just make a loop N put the needle through it to knot it N then weave your ends in. I wish I could show you. I will one day put some content out for those that need to be showing how to do it the right way. On all things that I need to show right,because so many other channels are shown the wrong way to a lot of people. It's called the fast N lazy way!!!

@@SewHomey I used Stitchboard for the pattern generator! The picture I used is the original book cover (blue night sky, big moon, characters on their horses) for Robert Jordan's novel 'The Eye of The World', since it's my favorite book. This is gonna be a very intense and long term project, I've never done a blanket or followed a pattern like this for crochet. (Honestly this is probably better suited for cross stitch lol). Ive literally just begun the 1st page, so no seaming yet but thanks to your video i feel the seaming will turn out well when i get to it! :)

I would use the same yarn used in your project. This seaming technique is nearly invisible so you could choose any color. And since the yarn is bulky, you might try splitting the yarn as you seam up the sides of the stitches. This will make the seams stay together and hide the yarn better.

Great question! When you seam the sleeve to the rest of the garment, you can use the same mattress stitch technique that is shown in this video. The difference will be the look of the stitches. The tops of the sleeves should have "v's" which are the tops of the crochet stitches. The side seams should look like what is shown in this video. You will join one "v" (one stitch) of the sleeve to one row of the sides. What I would recommend is for you to use stitch markers and attach the armpit of the sleeve to the armpit of the garment. Then add a stitch marker to the top of the sleeve to the shoulder of the garment. Then add a few more on the sides. This helps hold the sleeve and garment together, while guiding you where to seam. Then you can use the mattress stitch, starting from the armpit. Go from a "v" of the sleeve through the middle of a row on the garment. Match up the stitches to the rows as you go. Sometimes you have to play with the placement of the needle, it's not always exact. It's hard for me to express the answer in words. I hope that makes sense?? Let me know if it doesn't and I'll think of a better way to explain or I can figure out how to show you..

@@SewHomey The top of the sleeve ends with a row of double crochets. The front and back alternate between a row of single crochets and a row of double crochets, so a chain 1 and a chain 3 alternate on the sides. Would I sew multiple stitches of the sleeve into the chain 3s?

@@cheriberi934 It's possible? Maybe it would be easiest to count the sleeve stitches and the row stitches (sides). You could then determine the placement of your seam. It might end up that you need to sew a couple sleeve stitches into the ch3. But you might have to play with it and see how you like the results.

I always try to keep right sides together for consistency, however, it's not a must.

I like to seam with right sides up!

I would recommend this one for sleeves because when you fold the sleeve in half to seam, you will be working along the edges, just as I was in this video. You can line the rows up easily and as long as they stay aligned, you won't have to worry about your sleeve coming out uneven. And when you need to sew the sleeves to the body, it will be more of a hybrid between the two videos. You will have the tops of the stitches on the sleeve side and the edges of the stitches on the body side. But use the same techniques. You'll be taking your needle through the side of the stitch when you're on the body and through the center of the stitch when you're on the sleeve. I really hope that makes sense!

Yes that makes sense! Typically I do not change the colors when seaming. I like less ends to weave in and I think it’s more stable to keep it one continuous strand of yarn. This method is almost invisible, so I don’t find that the different colors show through. This is something I would play with though. See what you like. Because the yarn you use could play a role too. Hope that helps!

I was just trying to carry it up the stitch, other than that there wasn't really any reason I chose one or two loops. This is something you can play around with to see which you like better.

💛 I think it would still work. But when you are working the chain stitches, I would work them like the mattress stitch. If worked that way, I think it would be more invisible. Maybe try it on a small section first and see if you like it? Hope this helps!

To tie off the ends, you cut the yarn and leave about 6-8 inches. Then you pull the yarn end through the loop by your last stitch. That secures the work from coming undone. Finally, you can weave in the yarn tail you left at the beginning.

Ohhh I feel you. Black yarn is super hard to see, especially for your first project. But good for after it's stitched together since you won't be able to see it... I'm glad you could use this as a guide!
