This is so helpful. My main incentive for buying my MacBook was for entertainment and I have now found the Music app on my iPad pretty useless. I only have access to music, and videos I bought before they put a stop to it!! I can’t buy anymore but the video I most want is available on RU-vid. So I’m going to subscribe to RU-vid.
This is a keeper video. No doubt, I will refer back to it many times as I tend to forget things 🤔 Only thing better than this, is to show also how to custom select & make a 💿 CD.
Make a CD? Why? Where would you play it? Just kidding, some people still have CD players I know. But it won't be long before CDs are like video tapes and cassettes.
You also can drag and drop a folder (importing) with mp3's , AAC or ALAC (Apple Lossless) files on the Music App. Than it shows the albums in the app. You can also edit the tags. FLAC files are not supported in this app.
WOW Gary you must be reading my mind. I recently had difficulty ripping CDs on my newer MAC mini so used my partner's MAC Air with her plug CD-RW drive. It didn't come up on my mini.
Thanks Gary. Another great one! I was kinda hoping there’d be a way of accessing all the rips on my Mac via my iPad or iPhone. Some sort of iCloud upload?
That was a great tutorial. My only problem is what do you do if you have a large library on an auxiliary hard drive and are trying to import large music folders?
Hi, I didn't have any problems with Music app on macOS Sonoma but after upgrading my Mac Pro to macOS Sequoia,Music app is just crash,do you have any suggestions?
I learnt a long time ago to never ever let iTunes (now Apple Music) manage and "organise" my music collection. If you want to remove anything from the library, Apple's default setting is to also delete it from your hard drive. Manage the music yourself.
I filled my iTunes account on my iPhone 5 with torrented music in 2012. Can't remember how I did it but it worked and it worked great. 14 years & an iPhone 7 later which I'm still using my son laughed when I didn't couldn't get my head around Apple music. The iPhone 5 free earphones still work!
Not really. Even if you could you'd then be switching back and forth instead of having all of your music in one place. If you are afraid of making a bad move and losing your ripped files, just back those up so you can easily get them back if you decide to leave Apple Music and start over.
"The Donnas"! I am impressed! I am still struggling with my old videos in my iTunes Library. I believe that they are no longer necessary there, but many of them date back to the old video iPod days. Is it safe to simply delete them from "Music". Thanks!
I’ve already carried over my old library from iTunes and synced it with my iPhone and my iPad I lost my entire library once, I pulled it from my old iPod, but sadly the iPod I had broke i just use my phone for music now
Very useful indeed. I hated the idea of being 'forced' to use a subscription service, so pretty much ignored the app. Now I can revisit all my music. Thanks Gary
I have no recommendation there. The one I have is ancient. No idea what is even available now, but they should be pretty cheap so read reviews and roll the dice maybe.
Gary: Apparently, the location of the Music Media folder can be on an external drive. What about your Music Library? To save storage space in your Mac (and be in sync with your Music Media folder ), shouldn't your Music Library be stored on an external drive as well? What do you recommend?
The Library part is small. The media is what uses a lot of space. But you can put it on an external drive if you wish, yes. I prefer to keep it all on the internal.
I still use mine like the old iTunes. If I remember correctly, the first version of iTunes didn't have any way to attach art. Music is, hands down; my most used app.
@@Dave610Jones Not sure what you did, but music you ripped from CDs should still be there. Perhaps at some point you opted to not have those "downloaded" and that's why.
So, I've got Version 1.4.6.32 of Apple Music, on Sonoma 14.6.1 which appears to be the latest version for my M1 MAC mini. I don't see the Search options you show, because (as you stated) I do have a subscription to Apple Music. I've tried to keep my music separate due to a big problem I had before this with Apple's previous service "iTunes Match" whereby it got confused between their Music and my Ripped CDs. With my MAC mini if I plug the SuperDrive into a USB extender it doesn't recognize it!
That shouldn't be the case. AAC is an open standard that should work almost anywhere today. And better quality and smaller sizes than MP3, which is quite an old format.
My general settings doesn’t look anything like that. I am subscribed to iCloud+ but not Apple Music. I have a “sync library” check box and some options for listening history and then no way to remove Apple Music in the show: section.
Gary, Thank you so much! I have hundreds of music CDs and now (thanks to your excellent presentation) know I can connect an Apple CD player into my MacBook - and copy the music. How do I copy the music from the MacBook to my iPad? iCloud? All of your presentations are outstanding - you're a great teacher!
To do it with iCloud, look at iTunes Match (search). Otherwise without Apple Music or iTunes Match you'd need to sync from Mac to iPad (support.apple.com/en-us/108311)
Thanks, Gary! I know so many people who are confused by this so it’s nice to have link to send this to them. Also, my current MacBook Pro is so old that it’s running High Sierra and iTunes. However, I’m finally going to upgrade by December so this will really come in handy since I still burn CDs. 😀
@@ritinfek Depends on the "station." You'll need to experiment. File, Open Stream URL... should do it if you have the URL. Other stations have players on their sites. Some may even have their own apps.
Anyone have any recommendations for external drives for Macs? I’ve looked at a few and they seemed to be windows centric and the Apple drive has ejection issues.
Prof: Thanks for explaining how to disable the “Apple Music” feature. I really don’t plan on subscribing, so it is nice to eliminate that one distraction. Again, thanks for this video.
Too bad you can’t do this with the apple music app on Roku. It only works with Apple Music. Do you know if you can just use the music app for iTunes music on Apple TV?
I want to know how to keep Music from automatically playing when I remove my AirPods? I want to turn off Music entirely on my iphone and only have it on when I want to listen to something. Songs automatically play when I take my AirPods out.
I'm not following you. Remove from the case or from your ears? Is this a problem between your AirPods and iPhone, or with a Mac (the video is about Mac). Either way, it sounds like you will want to call Apple Support to get to the bottom of it.
@@macmost When I take my AirPods out a music track almost always begins playing. I hate Music! It is insidious and I've not found a way to turn it off entirely - fully - only on when I acutely want to play something. A tract will play often when plugging in Apple CarPlay. Note: I do not have the purchase feature enabled, I only use music that I've imported from CDs. I HATE Music, I wish they had the old iTunes back.
It would be great if you do a video on how to transfer music from old computer to new computer or old phone to new phone so that you don’t lose all those songs that were ripped from a CD. I lost a bunch of songs doing that incorrectly.
Apple really botched the Music thing. I know that iTunes became bloatware, and breaking it up was a good idea, but they screwed up the process. I have a very large library of my own music that I had built since iTunes first arrived, but it was ruined when they started the whole iTunesMatch thing, and it went downhill from there. I really wish that they had kept the iTunes library and Music thing seperate. I am a subscriber, because I had already become caught up in the sandbox, and I still believe they will defeat Spotify eventually. Be great if you could do what can't, Gary, and tell me how to reset Music back to the beginning where you input your music preferences. Mine still recommends those chosen by my wife, and she has been dead for six years. tell me to simply start again with another ID. Fine, but then what happens to the myriad of purchases I made on the old iTMS? They can't be transferred across IDs. Steve would be fuming.
Sorry, I don't have a solution for you. Apple IDs were always meant to be for one person and Apple Music preferences, like the various social media feeds and streaming TV networks just don't work well when there are multiple people there. All I can suggest is to keep playing music and eventually the preferences will catch up.
heyy sir my Mac is updated with latest 14.6.1 there ia no update available but stir getting notifications that your Mac is ready to update how to solve this problem.
@@macmost "Thank you for your response! I’m seeing notifications on my Mac that say it's ready to update, but my Mac is already running the latest version (14.6.1) and there are no new updates available. I was wondering if this is a known issue or if there’s any fix?
If you are not using Apple Music or iTunes Match, then the music would be stored according to the settings in the Music app. Usually in a media folder set there.
With a drawer full of CD's I haven't played for eons, today, I breathlessly rushed out and purchased an Apple USB Super Drive. Excitedly brought it home and successfully downloaded the first CD. Can you imagine my disappointment when I discovered I cannot sync this music with my iPhone? In my car, I have been without it for years. I guess that is my destiny. I'm now pretty much cheesed off and rueing the day I decided to 'go' with Apple. Gee, they make it difficult!
It’s interesting that Apple doesn’t default to sharing my music library across devices the way it wants the photo library shared, something I have to keep turned off to save memory. As for streaming I find the RU-vid Music which is free with Premium superior Apple Music.
Photo sharing is part of iCloud storage, which starts with a free tier. Music app syncing requires either an Apple Music sub or iTunes Match, which have no free level. That's why it doesn't sync by default.
@@davyrivera One thing to think about is Apple Music includes the iTunes Music functionality. So for instance I have some rare albums and recordings that Apple Music will sync across my devices just for me. I don't think RU-vid Music or any other service does that. I was able to go from my old iTunes collection to Apple Music without losing anything. But for most people that isn't a factor.
@@macmost an interesting discussion. I tend to want to keep my devices discreet from each other, aside from emails, notes, contacts and messages. So having my personal music albums on my phone is not important. RU-vid Music quality is fine for puttering around the house or out on walks. A bonus is that it does seem to have better classical music playlists than the Apple offerings.
Not sure what you mean by "a mess." I see my legacy music and my Apple Music additions as I would expect. With something else like Spotify I wouldn't have my old iTunes purchases at all.
