This works great. I was buying a coffee from the garage on the way into work each day and it was costing a fair bit. I now fill the filter basket at home each night, bring my pipamoka in with me and brew when I get to my desk. I leave the grounds in there until I get home, where I clean it and refill for the following day. Using an aeropress coffee grind, I get a better drink than antyhing I got from the garage for a fraction of the price :)

I've been making very good brews with the Pipamoka. I got it for travel, commute, and bikepacking. My 1ZPresso Q2 grinder fits INSIDE the Pipamoka and I can close the lid if I arrange carefully and remove funnel and scoop. Alternatively, I can keep the funnel but not pack the 1Zpresso Q2 receptacle and grind directly into the Pipamoka pod. The neat way of packing this product makes travel even better. My sippy lids from my other Wacaco products work perfectly. Very happy with the purchase.

I totally love my Pipa moka. I can have the perfect coffee whilst travelling, at work and everywhere. Actually I use mine every day now even at home. Perfect strength and stays really hot in the thermal mug with lid. YAY😄 And I also even like the twisting up as it is a ritual and also gives my hands good exercise.

Really enjoying the Pipamoka especially since I’ve been making Americanos from the Nanopresso when offering others a “full coffee”. As with the Nanopresso, you have to go through your routine and figure out the most efficient method...then repeat it. Here is what I do: I have a family with 2 young kids and my wife enjoys a cup of joe after a solid hike or day out camping (which is everyday since we’re still in Covid lockdown). I have two older Cauldryn thermoses along with 3 batteries. I can boil water just over the amount the Pipamoka takes in per thermos using the attached battery to the Cauldryn thermos, so I boil two at the same time. The water (tap water at home) comes from an 8 L Hydrapak (silicone bag) which we use to first wash our hands with the included spout. I then filter water from the Hydrapak using a Sawyer flow filter which attaches to the same plastic tube as the spout for my Hydrapak. The flow is quite fast and I can fill up the Cauldryns quite quickly. I do this so that I don’t have to fill up the 8 L pack with Brita water when I’m at home, takes way too long and we wash our hands with the water first, so no point having 8 L of filtered water. But if I want to make coffee or refill our water bottles, we have basically Brita water (I could also filter river water, but I’m not going to risk it since it’s a pandemic). In 7 minutes, I can boil the water, and start the Pipamoka process. I also have the Wacaco Espresso tumbler add on, which is great if you want to pour your coffee in there (since I need to use the Pipamoka tumbler to store all the items), or add water as a companion to your coffee. I have found pouring the completed coffee into my Yeti tumbler mini a great addition for the car and you can drink from the top without unscrewing the entire top (or store for later in your pack). I then pack all the items, leaving the grinds in the basket to clean when I get home (or if I have time, can clean using the water from the Hydrapak spout). I have bottle pouches using MOLLE webbing on my 5.11 military day pack, which fits the Pipamoka in the additional case. Even though I know it’s sealed, I like to keep the Pipamoka upright so that it doesn’t leak all over the case (a habit I developed from the Nanopresso). Alternatively, if you’re cooking using the Biolite 2, I can usually do a decent cookout with my cast iron pan and have enough wood pellets left over for a water boil. I also purchased a silicone kettle to plug into my car as my Hybrid SUV has a 1500 watt plug running off the car’s battery. This process would boil half a litre in 3 minutes (saving me from bringing my heavy battery thermoses). I’ve only used the Pipamoka twice, but it’s been great so far. I’m also using just a bit more than medium grind of Kicking Horse coffee beans. I grind the beans at home using a Cusineart grinder.

I do have the same problem--my small hands get a bit too much of muscle training for a cup of coffee. I'd like to have slimmer (or hourglass-shaped) version of a mug to get it easier for us with smaller hands to hold the mug while screwing.

Received mine today, it did make a good cup of coffee but I had some issues. First, it seemed like it took forever to turn, turn, turn to get to the coffee to drink. Second, cleaning was a bit of a mess. I wasn't sure how to get the filter out of the bottom without getting hot water all over the place. Is this an Aeropress successor, no way.
@benjohnmiller
@benjohnmiller 4 года назад
To be honest, I'm not that impressed with mine so far either. The whole process is a bit of a faff compared to other, much simpler and more satisfying coffee making methods. OK, I'm prepared to overlook that if the 'faff' is foolproof, easy, and I get a great cup of coffee. But each and every time so far, the whole process has been frustrating and unsatisfying. I'm an introspective guy, and fully prepared to blame myself if it's something I'm doing wrong. But I don't see how. I'm following both the written instructions, and these video instructions to the letter, and each time...frustration. For one, each time I've tried so far, when I get to the 'I've twisted it to the top and am about to pop it off the mug' stage, I look inside the chamber and it's still full of water. This is at about the 3 minute stage so I've left more than enough time for the vacuum process to complete. I've also tried different grind consistencies, from medium-fine, medium and medium-coarse. Even with the latter it still happens, so I'm fairly sure I'm not me choking the filter with too fine a grind. I'm really hoping I'm doing something stoopid here!
@Wacaco
@Wacaco 4 года назад
Tom, the easiest way to get the filter basket out is to turn the water chamber upside down after it has had time to cool. Tap the grinds into a waste basket, and quickly rinse the filter basket to clean. Ben, I see the our other reply, in addition to connecting support (in case this is a defect), have you been tapping the bubbles out of the machine after the basket descends? Waiting a minute or more after the filter basket has fully descended to allow the heat to distribute evenly throughout the machine? And also tried twisting more slowly (1 second twists, with 1 second pauses)? After you have completed the twisting process, remove the lid and look into the water basket. There should be absolutely no water left, if there is wait a few seconds. If that doesn't descend on it's own, the issue is too fine a grind (from your other comments it looks like you may be very close to dialing in the perfect grind, but need to go slightly finer than you're under extracted attempt, but not so much you see water not filtering all the way through the filter basket).

@@Wacaco Thank you for your reply. In response: 1) Reminiscent of that bit in Titanic where the ship finally slips under, I watch the basket slowly sink to the sea bed, wait about 10 seconds, then give the whole unit a few firm taps to dislodge any trapped air. I then put the lid on tight and begin the twisting process to create the vacuum that raises the sunken ship from the abiss. 2) As I previously mentioned, I've had slightly better results with a french press grind, but at that level of coarseness, the cup is under-extracted. When I pull the burrs closer together to head back towards medium-coarse, the problem slowly returns. I'll be honest with you; after a few days of experimenting and not seemingly getting anywhere, in frustration, I've put it aside for a bit. Perhaps tomorrow, I'll have another go and try again. If all else fails, I'll drop you a line via your customer services email. Thank you.
@Wacaco

@@benjohnmiller that Titanic metaphor made my day. When you pick it up again, wait 1-2 minutes after the filter basket has fully descended and try (using that medium coarse - coarse grind). You should see better results.

I have the same issue with my pipamoka. Different grind settings up to medium-coarse didn't help. It takes the same 3 or more minutes to unscrew the brewing chamber completely and it's always have at least 50% of water inside the chamber. By the way what temperature you recommend for brewing with Pipamoka?

Got my Pipamoka a few days ago. Early results are poor. What am I doing wrong? I'm following these instructions to the very letter. Every time I get to the 'STEP 10 | once the water chamber has fully risen remove it from the mug with caution' I look inside the chamber and it's still full of hot water. I've tried different grind consistencies. Thinking I'm choking the 'portafilter' with too fine a grind, I've eased it off to about medium-coarse. Still the same result. I'm also making sure everything is as tightly sealed as possible so there's a decent vacuum so the laws of physics can do their work. Any other suggestions? Thank you.

@@Wacaco I grind freshly roasted beans (never older than a few weeks past roast) myself. I use a Knock Haus grinder, and I have many years of experience grinding appropriately for making espresso, filter, French press. During my last attempt, I had French press coarse, and although the vacuum process worked better, the cup was insipid because - coarse grind + hot water rushing through = under-extracted cup. I know it's been a while this video has been posted and most likely no one will see it but I have one suggestion here: DO NOT close the lid while using it. That's it. The vacuum has to be at the bottom part and closing the lid you are trapping air and water at top which prevents liquid to actually being sucked down through the coffee - plain physics. I have been doing like this since day one (and it's now more than a year using Pipamoka) just because I haven't read the manual, sorry, and never seen any issues described in comments below. Try leaving the lid aside and share your results. The only thing here - looks like after all this time I might finally need a "redress kit" with all the rubber seals as mine are getting less effective in keeping a good seal; water runs down faster loosing some of the extraction volume.
@mohamadrezazolfaqari9308
@mohamadrezazolfaqari9308 2 года назад
They vividly show in tutorials the lid should be put on the water chamber, but it won't work as you said. However, if you leave the lid aside water sinks so fast! I found it helpful if you put the lid on slightly without any pressure. If take a close look you can see a litte carved line on inner top edge of the water, probably is left their to let the air flow, which is definetly blocked if you firmly put the lid on.

Hi Stacey! Make sure to wait 30 seconds - 1 minute after the filter basket as fully descended and tap out as many bubble as possible. Then when you start brewing make sure you turn slowly, in 1 second turns. If it becomes hard to turn, wait a few seconds, and then resume turning. Turning too fast will create too much pressure build up. Turning should always be almost effortless. If you are still having trouble the issue is your grind is too fine (it should be coarser than a typical espresso grind, closer to what you'd use for pour over or french press if you are brewing a full cup). This video will help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eNRuHL2-hL8.html&t

To be honest, this is quite a worthless coffee maker. I followed the instructions in the manual and even waited longer after the capsule dropped. I turn it about a quarter of a turn in a second, and once it's done, half of the water is still sitting in the compartment above the capsule. Unfortunately, this happens 9 out of 10 times, and if you reinsert it and turn it up again, then it works fine.
