HOW TO USE THE THUMB (PULGAR) IN FLAMENCO GUITAR
The thumb ("pulgar" in Spanish) is very important in flamenco guitar. In this video, for beginners and intermediate students, I break down the use of the thumb in detail so that you can understand the exact movements involved in the technique.

So sorry for the delay! Yes, I'm planing on making one soon but the secret for picado (and all techniques) is to relax as much as possible. The moment you feel that you're struggling or tensing up, that's the moment your progress will stop and where you can risk injury. You need to think of picado as if it were easy; like you're just throwing your fingers at the guitar (in a controlled manner). Start by playing VERY lightly and alternate between VERY lightly and fast and VERY lightly and slow. Then start adding dynamics as often as possible, but stay relaxed. I know I sound like a broken record but I can't stress enough how important it is to NOT be tense. Tension kills all progress and promotes injury. I hope this helps a bit!

This is such a helpful drill thank you so much! Can I just ask, is it only the nail making contact with the string or is there some flesh too? Thanks!
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed the video! You want to us e combination of flesh and nail. If you place the string right between the nail and flesh, push the thumb in a little past the nail (e.g., about a millimeter) and you'll be in a good position. If you like this video and my others please let me know what else you'd like to see on this channel. I'm getting ready to post more videos soon. Thanks again!

perfect lesson. I just have a question that has been in mind since always: why is the thumb technique used so much in many songs instead of picado? I've seen many videos of guitar players using the thumb in the D-G-B-e strings instead of the picado technique. Does it change the sound and tone a lot? What's the situation where you want to use this technique?
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic 3 года назад
Glad you liked the video! The choice to use the thumb ("pulgar") so much is rooted in flamenco guitar's origins. Spanish folk guitar was all accompaniment and pre-flamenco guitar was pretty much just strumming (rasgueados) and thumb. The extensive use of the thumb continued after Miguel Borrull fused early flamenco guitar with classical guitar and as flamenco guitar evolved the distinct sound that the thumb produced became a quintessential component to flamenco guitar's sound. Today guitarists use "p" as one of many choices when deciding on tone (e.g., rest strokes vs. free strokes, thumb vs. fingers, etc.). Hope this helps!

HI Self-learner here.. Sorry this is slightly off-topic, but i couldn't find any videos about picado from you :) I have a technical question I hope you will be kind enough to answer. Lets say you are playing a fast scale melody in the first position on the guitar neck ala Panaderos. Loosely speaking, each string will have approx. 2 notes which will need to be fretted and one open string. I find that the when I have to play the open string, the guitar neck flies out of the hand, because there is no fretting pressure, countering the force from the right arm. What I try to do is to use 'left hand finger preparation' as much as possible (even if that anticipated note is only in the next bar) so that there is always a fretting pressure on the fret-board, but i find that this can hinder left hand mobility and generally looks awkward if overdone.. I may be mistaken (please correct me if I am), but it seems in Panaderos , Paco is NOT using the strict classical left hand posture, but rather what appears to be a blues guitar posture, where part of the left hand is glued to the bottom of the guitar neck (around the Index metacarpal area), which I presume is to provide stability for playing open strings... Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic 5 лет назад
Hi! Thanks for the comment. Yes, I'll put up a picado (and tremolo, ligado, abanico rasgueado, etc.) video soon! You don't want to fret notes in order to prevent the neck from moving outward. You should be able to play open notes and fretted notes with the neck stable. There are three things you can do: 1) tuck the guitar into your hip so that the sound hole is facing slightly downward, 2) rest your picado-hand forearm on the side of the guitar, 3) start with the neck angled a tiny bit away from you (like Teo K said). In fact, Teo K is totally correct regarding the posture on your right leg: guitar tilts slightly forward. Paco is definitely using a standard left hand posture. In classical there are also moments when your left palm needs to touch the neck a little. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for watching! The thumb (pulgar) in flamenco and classical is typically a downstroke with the exception of the Alzapúa technique. I have a video on the alzapúa where you can see the technique. In either case, make sure that you are playing lightly. Don’t worry about producing a lot of volume; just focus on light and fluid movements. Also, make sure you are using a nylon-string guitar rather than a steel-string. Thanks again!

@@DiegoAlonsoMusic Thankyou sir i used steel string guitar sir....
@DiegoAlonsoMusic

Hi again! You should definitely use a nylon-string guitar. Steel-string guitars will not work for flamenco. They will destroy your nails.

Hi! so i see that the index is generally rested on the high e string when playing pulgar or alzapua. what is the rule for the middle finger though? Usually I let it hang free, however lately I noticed when I raise the ring finger in order to give it some 'acceleration space' to do golpes, the middle finger moves with it sympathetically (making the hand movement look rather exaggerated unaesthetic, especially given that the pinky will naturally move with the ring finger given the shared tendon), which also makes my golpes sound like elephant thuds. Am I supposed to rest the middle finger along with the index on the e-strings to avoid this? thank you
@DiegoAlonsoMusic
@DiegoAlonsoMusic 5 лет назад
You can do a few things: 1) rest only “i” on the 1st string, 2) rest only “m” on the 1st string, 3) rest both “I” and “m” on the 1st string. Personally, I’ll use all of these options depending on the phrase I’m playing. The key is to be as comfortable as possible and stays super relaxed. Make sure you’re hand is lose and relaxed.
