This is a demonstration of how to use the Zoom H1 Handy Recorder and how to use its features and settings to get the best sounding audio for your purposes. This video demonstrates how to use the playback controls, how to delete recordings, how to format the SD card, how to set the input level at an optimal level, how to use the auto-level function and when to use the auto-level function, how to use the lo cut function, how to change the audio quality and file type, along with many more topics. This video is geared towards beginner users of the Zoom H1 and beginner users of audio recording devices.

Thanks for the video. Lots of good tips for those of us who haven't taken the time to read the manual. ;) I didn't even realize we could change the WAV quality setting from the default. I don't think it will record 3 channels when you plug in an external mic though. Unless there's a setting I'm missing, I think it just disables the on-board mics.

Thanks for posting this one! My father uses this to record music live but have relied on auto recording. He have noticed that it cuts off certain dynamics. He indeed did wonder if the levels could be customized and it can be done like I thought it would be. It would have been silly otherwise since it can be done with Zoom H2 which I use as a audio card for my PC. Great device because it has mic which is ideal for voice chat or home recording. I used it often for acoustic guitars, flute, harmonica and such.

This video was a life-saver! I have to record my students' oral exams this coming week. My facilitator showed me how to set things up, record, etc., but I still had questions. This video gave me ALL of the details about how to operate this device, including how to do playback ON the device. I don't have a sense of small techy gadgets so I needed to hear a complete instructional, and THIS was the only one online that had everything so I can record interviews, play them back on the device, and download them to my computer. All of a sudden(?) my Zoom H1 seemed to not have enough 'space' on the SD card; was only getting 1 1/4 hour record time on the lowest kbps setting. Thought I was gonna have to buy a new card. Research online brought me to this page and all the comments about your video Michael Bednarsky. Voila! It worked. Followed the part of your tutorial about formatting the card...trash can etc. and I'm a happy recorder guy again! Thanks so much for your excellent advice.

Nice tutorial Michael. I just purchased my H1 and your tutorial helped a lot. One question I have is can you use the USB to computer connection to record directly to a file on a computer. I've been doing some video recording on an ATV with my GoPro camera and of course get a lot of wind noise. I would like to be able to play back the video and annotate an audio track real time. Can this be done or do I have to record directly to the H1 and then import and sync the audio with the video track with my Sony Movie Studio editing software?

Thanks! This was really helpful :) I have a question. I did an WAY recording of a conversation and maxed out the card so it stopped by itself during the recording (I had my WAW sett to 96/16). Now I can't access the file on my recorder and I can't delete it. It just says 'Card Full'. Do you know how I can delete that recording directly on the H1?

HI Michael, Great presentation! My question is, I have a Zoom H1 and the level channels are not working correctly evenly, the left is working and is doing what is should, the right is not showing thats it's hearing the sound, is this adjustable or is is there something else I can do to correct this? I have a question Can the audio from the zoom be pressed on to a CD? and if so do you have a video on how to do this? I'm not very good with all this computer stuff. You said it will record 3 channels simultaneously when plugging into the line in port. Does this mean it can only record mono on the line in? or will it support stereo as well?

I am learning to record with the H-1. This is a valuable tutorial. Thanks for posting. In case you don't cover it, is there a way to recover a WAV file that I accidentally sent to the trash can? Thanks. I had four files listed--1, 2, 3, 4. Now it only displays 2, 3, 4. Is file 1 retrievable?

So if I understood you well, when you connect the outside mic, then the device acts like there are three source of inputs? It doesn't turn of the front two mics?

Hi I want to record a audiobook with 5 people. We (5 persons) are all sitting in front of the one notebook and we are reading the text from the notebook display. Where and in which distance from the notebook and the speakers do you think is the optimal position for the H1 Zoom recorder? The problem is that the housing of the mic is not so stable and we can not give the microphone to the respective person who is talking. This would be the best.. So my idea was to do it behind to the notebook display in the center in a upright position. Would you recommend this or do you recommend a better position? Thank you in advance
