Sean, I've been playing for 23 years. Mostly as the rhythm player in every group I've been in. The last 3 years I've been trying to "unlock the fretboard" and learn my scales, modes, get tastier licks and tricks and become a competent lead player. I've paid for online courses, watched endless hours on RU-vid, worked through a technique book and paid for weekly lessons in an attempt to improve. But this video was a HUGE eye opener for me. The way you explained the major/minor 3rd intervals between strings and then the intervals that make up a triad, just blew my mind. Just wanted to say thank you, you made a huge difference man!
These, “What to do when you’re frozen by the headlights”, videos of yours are brilliant. Nobody else covers the gap from the brain to the first movements of the fingers like you do. They make unfounded assumptions. I’m grateful.
I've been playing guitar for years and one thing I've learned is there is always more you can learn. I really enjoy your lessons. Entertaining and Informative. What more can you ask for from a lesson great job .
This was a good video to show how to put everything together and why learning all the pieces invested are not lost time. Chord progressions, keys, notes on the fretboard, triads, scales. This was the video to show me how simply it all comes together once the moving parts are learned.
Hey man. I just wanted to say that I've been a subscriber for a couple months now and I can say without a doubt that this video has changed me as a player. I've been trying to study all the different scales and shapes for a little while now because I've always wanted to be able to solo over my looper pedal. Up until this point I've had only a little success because I felt comfortable in fixed shapes or spots on the neck but i found it hard to make shifting between these points seem creative and musical. After watching your lesson here I immediately went to my guitar to try out some of your ideas and for whatever reason it all just clicked! This has given me an effortless way to move up and down the neck that doesn't sound robotic or clumsy. I've been playing now for an hour straight over different chord progressions and it's honestly the most fun I've had with my guitar in a long time. I only paused my playing to make coffee and write this comment to let you know how awesome this feels! Thanks for all of the awesome content and keep up the good work! Cheers!
Although not related to this video, your explanation of a looper pedal was so simple. I bought a boss RC one Looper and must have watched 10 videos however yours was the simplest and actually works. Love your teaching videos. I use and with my students.
Love the solo tou came up with! I have been playing guitar for about 10 years, completely self taught. Recently i have decided to go hard on theory. I really feel that i am starting to get a far better grasp on this thing called music, and videos like yours makes it a lot more fun then just reading a book
I had to search and write down all the notes of triads to learn them. That 4/3 interval is such a good way to figure them out when I don't have my notes right in front of me. Thank you!
My word, I've had some good teachers but this guy has a clear course of action and explains it so well! Excellent work, I needed some theory refreshment.
Great triad introduction! At some point you should do a lesson on Open Voiced triads, that's like Frusciante's secret weapon for riffs around the Californcation album, and the signature Eric Johnson sound :)
This came at the best time in my self studies. The relationship between the major and minor arpeggios. Great lesson. Looking to proficiently join arps during chord changes. This is a good step towards it. Thanks
best triad lesson that I have watched...wow...really opens up the fretboard magic in a geometric way...makes it very visual and kind of descrambled the chaos that it feels like in my head!...lol...you are really awesome ...extremely humble too...
Hi Sean, When I was 10 my Dad bought me my first acoustic it came with a instructions on how to tune it . On my 12th birthday my Dad bought me my first electric and amp . Boy was I ever exited, I had him take me to the old Oxfords book cellar where I got some pretty good books to get me started . I never quit, and always love learning new things . I've just discovered your channel today, and have been watching few of the videos . This is great stuff, thanks for posting :)
Triads now make a lot more sense. Major/minor 3rds....wow! Ok, I think I'm getting this. Thanks to the Jamman solo xt looper I just played my first solo outside of the magic pentatonic box. Great video Sean. Thank you
You know not every brief lesson will serve everyone. Having said this you gave me a fresh look at triads that will help me explain explain this piece of theory and its application to beginning soloing. Thank you!
this is the channel I needed. I know how to play guitar and I'm learning theory. applying theory to guitar and is the other thing I was truly looking for.
Great lesson, clear and precise- will really help me as I move into soloing. Would have been nice to have this all in TAB format, inclusing your licks over the Am-C-G-Dm progression. Thanks for sharing your knowledge- it really helps!
Great lesson on triads and their application. Refreshing to see something not already done a thousand times like most guitar lessons on you tube. Hope you find many other ways to keep lessons fresh.
Really good lesson. I realized I know more than I thought I did, but you helped me connect the dots a little on the arpeggios that I already knew as just shapes, now I can construct them with the formula. Could you do a similar video for 7th chords?
Discover your channel something like 5 days ago, watched maybe all your videos. My conclusion, you're the best and the funniest dude that ever teach me something on guitar. Keep it up !
Thanks for this. I like your approach of explaining it in easily understandable, small sections like that. (Btw, love the sherwood green strat. Definitely one of Fender's most underrated colors).
Hey Sean. I'd like to say that I feel that you have one of the hottest guitar lesson channel on RU-vid right now. Your simplified approach towards theory has helped me out by a great magnitude. And I am certain that I'm just one of the countless many. I hope you keep making these lessons and keep enlightening us.
This is great - it articulates the sounds we can hear but never knew there was a name for. Now - how about a lesson in triads and arpeggios for finger pickers. Good job Sean -
Hey Sean, you explained this so well and easy to understand.Great stuff man. This is something Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton used to do a lot back in the day,i guess..when you hear a lot of those great solos. Cheers!
Great. From this video i am going into right direction..Scales[ all direction,1 2,3-4 strings] ,arpegios,Triads..seeing fretboard more and more , and realize a lot ot movable paterens.Someone said if u can see it u can play it.Didnt know what he mean.. now i do . :) great video..
Love this. Been experimenting with triad shapes. TRUE it seems at first that you cant make triads sound intresting. Thanks for unlocking some possibilities.
Wish I understood any of this. I think I'll go self-induce a brain injury and see if I come to with a new savant ability to play the guitar. Probably won't happen, but at worst people will hand feed me pudding forever.
I was in the same position as you a while back. But I’ve just watched this again today and now makes complete sense. Try and learn stuff that’s simpler than this. Then you’d find yourself heading to this lessons subject and you’ll eventually understand. Then you’re on to the next one. Hope you keep the learning going 👍
@CrasherXtreme Xoxoxo So in this video he is playing an Am run through different triad positions and then in another in Cmaj? Two separate runs over 2 different chords - right? Thx if you can confirm At first I thought he was mixing them
i learned this technique youre teaching here in the ending solo of bold as love from hendrix. He does this epic thing and i just had to learn it. Great Lesson! :D
Shane Hutchinson hi Shane thanks for your observation . Have a great day ps I’ve been playing for 50 years and am a signed songwriter . I’ve also taught over 1500 people to play guitar over the years . I have 2 degrees in music and have been a session musician etc . I think that qualifies me to call myself a professional . Having said that I’ve never lost the joy of playing , writing , teaching and learning . Good luck on your guitar journey .
Your videos definetly serve well for inspiring and learning more. I've only been playing for 2 years and I stumble upon some discoveries myself, but you help me get to them a lot faster. I enjoy the videos, especially since I'm getting into song writing and need ways to get new inspiration! :)
Hi Sean..I am buying my first Electric guitar soon..I am still a beginner but i don't like those entry guitars..looking at the Ibanez Z100 or anything along that range ..any advice?
Been watching your video for couple weeks. I have a little back ground with piano but its far. Beginning guitar, i'm lost listening to you . How do you keep track of where your note are # ,b , etc ?
Great question, that part is by the far the biggest difference coming from piano. Guitar is more about different shapes. I would suggest you try and memorize the first 7 frets on the low e string and a string. Then you'll start seeing how they relate to other notes of a different pitch.
cold in Florida lol....Sean my friend and much more knowledgeable guitarist I've ever seen or witnessed...I'm from Missouri my son tricked me into come live in Alaska with him his truck was a NEW 2014. 60th anniversary mystic Aztec gold fender strat..and a 2013 Chevy impala..Sean I don't like it here..is there any finger and hand theropy I can do for my now freezing and already had arthritis and joint swelling?
Man that's rough buddy. One thing to always do is maybe just take a minute or two to stretch your hands and get em warmed up. That should definitely help a bit :)
Sean. Similar qn I asked in your other lead & rythm vid. In your improv eg at the end. Did you trace your Am arpeggio over the Am chord change or use the arpeggio like a lick over any one of the 4 Chords. Thanks
