Eric asked how to speed up a high poly scene he was working on. XRefs are the answer.

Great tutorial! There are several options for importing and xref, but your technique shows exactly what I was looking for!

Any advice on how to speed up imports of a massive XREF like 15M Polys + Forest pack. It takes quite a while to import.
@jakedenham
@jakedenham 3 года назад
I would keep the Forest pack in your main scene. Also grab a script from scriptspot called cleaner and see if you have any track nodes in any of the scenes. I remember to saved me a few times. Let me know how you get on

any way to move a xref to a specific point in viewport? Wonder how this could work in Big Master Plan Architecture in which we have a lots of Buildings.. :-)
@jakedenham
@jakedenham 2 года назад
If you would like to move you Xref around in the viewport, Create a Dummy (Create > Helpers > Dummy) In the XRef Scenes window click Bind (bottom right) Bind to the dummy. Now when you move your dummy around it will move your XRef. Does this help?

so.. its still processing the xref objects, why is it faster? What is the trade off
@jakedenham

good question, it will take about the same time to load the scene as it does to open. But once open it will be easier to navigate the scene, work on lighting etc

its for making your viewport smoother while youre working, from what I understand

@@jakedenham I'm creating big scene for one camera. I would like to know what would be best way to do it: Few big Xref scenes, or Vray proxies? I can test this later, but what is your opinion? Plants are going to be Vray proxies anyway, but how about lots of photogrammetry objects with 4K textures?
@mikakorhonen5715
@mikakorhonen5715 2 года назад
@@jakedenham I think I found my answer. Vray proxy is loaded in to memory only when its rendered. Xref is loaded fully at start of the rendering.

Hi, I'm one of you student in Udemy. I just drop you a question about this technique- XRef, and I found this on RU-vid here. My course is Exterior 3D Rendering This one is useful for make scene and for render. also I'd like to learn about making proxies.

Hi, did this answer your question?
@prachse
@prachse 3 года назад
Yes, it explains many things when working with big scenes. My idea for doing this is to be able to develop my design together with modeling and visualizing for clients.

@@prachse Good plan, and good workflow.
