I turned my pump off yesterday but when when I went to turn it back on the motor hums but will not filter the water

What should I have it on when I vacuum the pool?

Hey Jamor, you have 2 options. If you have a crap load of debris in the bottom of your pool, or you used floc, vacuum to waste. This bypasses the sand and shoots it strait out, which will lower your water. If it just a regular/weekly vacuum with few leaves and some dirt, I would vacuum to filter. This will save your water. Hope this helps.

Is it possible to use this pump as a vacuum ? And If it does, what is the setting for the pump ?

Yes! Depending on the situation. For example if you have dirt and leaves you can set it to “filter” and that is good. When you flock, you would want to vacuum to waste. Good luck.

Does water need to be in the pool to clean the filter??

Yes. You will need water to backwash. Backwashing is the easiest way to clean your sand filter.

I have a Pentair Sand Dollar (SD35) sand filter. Several weeks ago, I had a local change the sand in the filter. Ever since then I have been having the following problems: 1. When I backwash, only clear water comes out of the backwash hose. Normally, when the pressure increases by 10 psi (from 10 to 20 psi), there is filtered stuff from the pool which is washed out of the filter. 2. After backwashing, the psi is 10, however after about 2 hours or so of ‘filtering’ the psi increases to 20. Any idea of what is wrong and how do I fix it? No sand is in the pool itself. Thanks!

Check the level of the sand to what is recommended in the manual. Also putting a little water clarifier helps the pool and the sand in the filter.

@@johnhanselman6371 Thanks for the post John. I finally got one of the large pool companies to come out and take a look at the filter. Unbelievably, the handy man that I hired to change the sand put the laterals on top of the sand rather than at the bottom of the filter. Needless to say, that person is not returning any of my phone or emails. 45 minutes later, after the correct fix, all is well and filtering as normal. This seems like something from the Twilight Zone :( Have a great weekend!
