Firstly, I appreciate anybody who wears a pocket watch. I personally have worn a pocket watch for many years and I have quite a collection that I wear alternately. It is a good idea to have at least two, that way you can allow one to run down and rest. I would like to make a couple of points, which are not meant as criticism. 1. If a watch is worn in a vest pocket it should be on your non-dominant side. ie. on your left if you are right-handed. 2. not all watches are set by lifting and turning the crown, as you did. Some watches are lever-set, pin-set, or key-set. where the crown is not designed to be lifted. In fact, attempting to pull up the crown can break the watch, so make sure what type you have first. 3. An antique or vintage mechanical watch (not a modern quartz/battery watch) should not generally be worn in a trouser pocket for two reasons. It is more prone to shock and damage from other items such as coins and keys. I am not a fan of these modern clips that you demonstrate. These clips have only emerged as the waistcoat has become more obsolete. They are really only intended for use on trousers, on the waistband or belt. A traditional T-bar is much more elegant on a vest button-hole. I also do not like the idea of passing the chain through the button-hole and leaving the clip in your other pocket. The chain you demonstrate is a "single Albert" and is meant for one pocket. If the style of having a chain to each pocket is what you like, then a "double-Albert" should be used. That's two chains of equal length from a single T-bar or clip. One chain for the watch, and the other for another item such as a key (key wind/set watch), pocket knife, etc. But, having said all that, it's all a matter of personal taste. Keep wearing the watch.
I am never too busy to take time to respond to my fans, it is guys like you that keep me going all these years now. I have to tell you my collection is around 200 or more now, but I have been collecting them since I was about 12. You will get there someday but don't try to rush it just let it happen. Quality is always better then quantity.
If your referring to my bottom button sir, then I should inform you that like a jacket when wearing a vest you leave the bottom button undone. It is proper suit wearing etiquette.
Its tradition that comes fro George V, if remember correctly. He used to wear waiscoats, but was so chubby, that had to unbutton the bottom button while sitting next to the table. Am I right?
Woah! Thanks so much for this tutorial I really needed to know how to use a pocket watch, this'll be perfect for when I'm 90 and lying on my death bed...
Why did you come to this video? From the way your replying to this you probably won't live until your 90 because some old guy will introduce you to GOD
I use a pocket watch to find out the correct time period. It's kept in my pants pocket where it's safe and away from damage. I don't use it to show status or show off. But you should see some of the looks I get when some people ask for the correct time.
Glad you liked the vids, I am pleased with how they turned out. I too am interested in the fob style but they are rarely seen over here in the states and to order something from the UK can be very costly once you consider the rate of exchange and the shipping. Beside the watch is from a good friend of mine and has great sentimental value. I have seen uniformed before, he has some wonderful vids up and I am very much jealous of his style and vast wardrobe.
Is it wise enough to wear a wrist watch along with ur pocket watch !!?? just curious . I like the antique look of those pocket watch and at the same time i like to wear wrist watch too..
Love that pinstripe attire you have there. Very nice. I just bought a very nice "steam punk-style" (I really hate that term) pocket watch and I'm looking to wear it as you suggested. Thanks for the vid. Stay classy!
I always wondered why Dutch van Der Linde’s vest had that beautiful gold chain across the front of it! He just had a nice pocket watch!! I just got one from Wal-Mart. It’s cheap but it’s quartz and it looks nice enough. I may start collecting pocket watches though!
Is there an alternativ to ties and bow ties? On some photographs I have found, the gentlemen wears some kind of scarf. If so thats a guide that would be great.
Is your watch an electric quarts movement ? Because I noticed you didn't mention winding it. All my pocket watches are antique with mechanical movements. I find it best to wind them at least every 12 hours but some of them keep good time winding only once every 24 hours. However, since I wear different ones on different days I often allow them to wind down and rest up until the next time I use them.
Thank you! You're tie and pocket square videos are so helpful. I watched most of your videos, so interesting of a hidden world of class. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Sir keep posting and I will keep seeing real style and class, class costs nothing but it it is truly priceless, if only people would see that, I am sure, you the same it makes me sad, truly sad.
Mr Webster Sir, you have true class and style, parts may not be 100% correct, but at the end of the day its YOUR style. Forget what some say, I am English, I find your suit and dress, both well fitting and very tasteful. I would also like to say the same for your grammer on an youtube video. You sir inject class and your style (I find very good) in to youtube. Please keep the good work up. David
Well the tbar is another style of the watch chain yes and the best way to wear it is to fasten it to one of the button holes of your vest. you can start it at the bottom button then raise the chain up towards the top then bring it down into the pocket, depending on the lengths of the chain. If not then just fasten it somewhere in the middle and let it fall into the pocket. I wish I had that style chain I would be able to give you a visual of what i'm talking about, hope this helps.
Would it be okay if i just strap the chain from my black denim pocket to the belt while wearing a casual three fourths? I think it would look decent to good but im not quite sure. .
Most jeans have a watch pocket, a small pocket inside and above the main pocket on the right side. This type of chain is then clipped to the belt, or the waist of the pants. If wishing to wear a pocket watch with a waistcoat, a bolt ring chain would work for that, and for pants as well (by clipping around a belt loop), though an Albert T-Bar chain would work better (and look better), however could only be used with a waistcoat. A Double Albert T-Bar would look similar to this, with a single T-Bar attached to two chains, one for each pocket, if you needed two watches, a watch and a stopwatch, or had something else to go on the other chain. I've used a pocket watch for almost two decades, because wristwatches always seem to pinch, chafe, trap water, or catch on things. Even when I started carrying a cellphone/smartphone, the pocket watch was easier to get out and look at, and of course the chain adds a bit of shine to my outfit. I would definitely recommend them.
By Jove, All this time I’ve been tying the pocket watch to my wrist with the chain! Now I know you’re supposed to wear a pocket watch in your pocket, thanks!
If you are referring to a hook style similar to a dog leash hook, these are meant for fastening to trouser belt loops. They are not very efficient elsewhere, which is why I prefer the clip (like the one in the video) and T-bar over the hook style. I have all three, but rarely use the hook.
Bravo good Sir ! I don't want to embark on a rant about our times, but since I share that rare but sturdy gene, I felt a simple "thumbs up" just wouldn't do. Have a hat-tipping good day being a proper G.
I’m female and have just bought a pocket watch. I have two waistcoats and this will be lovely. I can’t ware normal watches as I am allergic to aluminium. It will make a pleasant change to having to get my phone out
This was great, thanks mate! I was unsure of exactly how to go about wearing the watch on my person: thanks for letting me know it can pretty much be however!
That is an epic bow tie. I've been trying to find some really nice bow ties like that. Most of what I find are little pre-tied "tuxedo" bow ties that just seem really small. Nice video, too! I recently bought a pocket watch and the end of the chain has the same "belt clip" thing at the end. I was a little confused about how to wear it with my waist coat. I'm thinking of looking for a double albert chain to replace the one mine came with.
Oh boy i got a reply from you. Thank you again for uploading this, and i love your bowties. i someday wish to have a collection as big as yours, but at the moment i only have my one.
well you may know how to tie a tie in Old Blighty but I know how to tie one here in state as well. My ties are perfection with each I wear and I will not have anyone tell me otherwise. I do not blame you for what you said about my mother as you had no idea of her passing. I have been dressing myself since I was 11-12 and have been accustomed to this style for some years now. As far as my pocket silk goes there are several folds in which one can wear them and it is up to ones personal preference.
oh it is a fold that I came up with no real name for it really, I like to call it the pleated fold. I make 3 triangular folds and cross them over one another .
I believe you are referring to a cravat or ascot. the cravat ties much like a neck tie but with a more extravagant knot and is meant to be worn with a vest or waistcoat as it hang differently then a traditional neck tie. The ascot is much like a cravat but it is tied more like a scarf and worn beneath a dress shirt which might be closer to something form the Victorian era.
Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend. My Friend keep posting, show youtube and the people just what class is like, we are a dead bread.......but its refreshing to see its just not me. You have a freind.
thanks so much.. very informative.. i wear three piece suits at my job all the time in a hotel and i recently got myself a nice vintage watch and chain and I needed something like this so I did not look like an idiot
I never said you were a troll, my suit does fit and tie is perfectly tied and the pocket silk fold I have chosen to adorn here is quite acceptable. Lost my mother to breast cancer about 10 years ago and I suggest any further negative comments you have be legitimate before you post them, just a suggestion.
Good video, I got a cheap watch just to try one out. It seems like such a simple thing, how to wear a pocket watch but I didn't have a clue. Very informative so thankyou.
Nicely done sir. Maybe it would be worth while doing an instructional on 19th and early 20th century kneck ties and how they would be properly done. Ted
Just a little tip for those who, like me, just entered the joyous world of wearing pocket watches: Most trousers/pants have an additional small pocket watch pocket over the right-hand "main-pocket". To old pocket watch enthusiasts this will be nothing new, perhaps even laughably obvious, but I was strangely touched to learn, that the fashion industry had kept this pw feature alive despite the general (appalling) decline of its intended use.
That clip on the end of the chain is a belt or waistband clip. If you are wearing a pocket watch attached to a vest, the clip is replaced by a T-bar or Spring Ring for attachment to the button hole.
I've read that you place the watch in the opposite side pocket of your writing hand but, I don't like the way it looks I'll wear it in my right pocket even though I'm right handed
You are right, how dare I disgrace my pocket watch, I will never wear it again and am throwing in the trash right now, all because what you said is so profound...
temporarily, as a growing teen "and a geek". electroswing is a new genre and with it comes the style of steampunk. so something tells me pocketwatches are going to get popular again.
I received my new watch in the mail today and it has exactly the same type of chain, which is a shame, because I have not found a satisfying way to wear it with a waistcoat. Wearing it like a double Albert is weird and feels dangerous, and I don't want people to see the clip. I've settled for clipping it on my shirt pocket for now, but it seems that clib is only to be used for wearing the watch on your belt.
The watch should be wound once a day, at the same time, preferably in the morning, until the spring is fully wound. When winding the watch spring, you need to rotate the crown in both directions. Rotation in both directions should be done evenly. Do not wind the watch jerkily. When winding is almost complete, the crown should be turned more slowly. The watch spring must be charged completely. If you need to move the hands of a clock, you should not move them against their rotation.
The original way to wear one was through the buttons of a waistcoat though, in fact it was meant to go into a button hole specially made on the waistcoat for a watch chain that had no button corresponding to it.
