You've seen my awesome haul from the Amish Salvage store where I bought a huge bag of rice and a 5 pound bag of grits. How do I make it stay fresh? Here's how I vacuum sealed them with my FoodSaver 3880.
Here are the products that I used in this video:
FoodSaver 3880 Series: amzn.to/2Ekmfde
Jar Vacuum Sealer attachments: amzn.to/2CeGLyR

Love your site, I am just learning all of this. My family thinks I am crazy because I am just starting out at my age, but, I think soon we are going to have a shortage in the stores, then they will see I am not so crazy. Thank you for teaching this important life lesson!

Don't put rings on vacuum sealed jars. From years of experience, those jars may unseal and if you have rings on, you may not notice it. I go through my dry vacuum sealed goods once a month or so and lift the lids to see that everything is still sealed. You do, at times, get a jar that will unseal.

I'm laughing. Not at you. I haven't sealed a jar for a few years so today I pulled out the sealer and the lid sealer and pressed it on plugged in the hose and hit on and accessory but it did nothing. I had not pulled the hose completely out and then my wife push the big red button and it started to draw but it drew the flour into the hose which was bad so I stopped the sealer and pulled up your video. After listening to your guidance I then went back, pulled the house completely out, I had to dig out some flour to bring the flour level down from the top of the jar and then cleaned the jar and far flat. I then turned on the sealer. I placed the flat onto the jar, pressed the jar sealer onto the jar and plugged in the hose and pressed accessory and it worked flawlessly. Thank you for sharing your video which saved my humble attempt to seal a jar. Best regards from Sand Hollow Homestead.

I am on my third machine now because I broke the black part that fits into the jar sealer... by TWISTING. You do not need to twist. Just push down until you have a decent seal. I can't find another black fitting anywhere so I just keep the machine to use the bag sealer when we buy and bag meat in bulk. We make an assembly line... bag maker... bag filler... bag sealer. More than you want to know but I can not emphasize enough... DO NOT TWIST.

If you put coffee filters on the top of these kinds of items it will help keep any powder out of your Hose and machine also if you put a little rice in a coffee filter and put it on top of any jar you worried about moisture it has works like an absorber

I am VERY late to the long term food storage thing as I only Started stocking a pantry last year, but not the really long term storage, mostly store bought tin canned foods and water bottles. But I picked up a vacuum sealer and a box of rolls/bags three days ago. Picked up a few cases of mason storage jars last month. Also picked up some Mylar bags and the little oxygen absorbing packets a few weeks ago. Got a 16 cubic foot chest freezer two months ago and it’s not even a quarter filled yet. Plenty of room left for bug freezing for bags of flour/rice/dry beans/etc. Should get a dozen 3-1/2 gallon water storage bricks delivered to me next week.

@John January The only problem with freezing things is if there is a grid down situation …. Unless of course you have a generator. Same goes for a FoodSaver. I have those same wide mouth and regular mouth FoodSaver jar tops too, but I also bought a brake bleeder to use without electricity. In case some people don’t know about that, it’s a good method to use. I have a FoodSaver but it’s old and you never know when any particular model will go kaput !

Also, the jars need to be stored in a dark room Thanks, for sharing your video, Have a Blessed Day 8 Steps to Storing Rice in Mason Jars Buy a big bag of rice to make the process worth your while Freeze rice for three days to kill weevil eggs or not- if you use Oxygen absorbers, this should create an environment that kills all bugs and eggs Distribute rice into clean mason jars Drop a food-grade Oxygen absorber into each jar Place lids on jars Use a Food Saver with the jar attachment to seal jars Once sealed, place rings on jar Store in a cool, dry location.

I want to mention that the plastic connector from the hose to the lid tool broke on my tool. I cut of the end, exposing just he plastic hose and sofar I found when I just put the end of the hose over the hole in the lid tool, I suction the 250ml more consistently. I also am less concerned about wearing out the latch mechanism on my machine. When the vac is done I just remove the hose to release the seal.

You need to remove the ring after water bath or pressure canning. Wash the jars exterior and the rings to remove any siphoned liquid or salt. The rings may protect the edge of your jar and also be impossible to remove in time. Because I said so. . .

Hon freezing doesn’t kill the bugs. They go to sleep. To kill you need to put in the sanitized jar, bake at 220 degrees for 2 hours, add lids and rings while still hot. They will seal on their own. Those jars that do not seal, you can use the vacuum sealer on them.

Yes you can skip the freezer. If you can not can right away I would then put my food stuff in the freezer TILL I am able to can. You are putting to sleep any bugs till you need to can. Think about it: if you live up north, if freezing kills the bugs we should NOT have any bugs, temperatures here in winter get a lot colder than any freezer I have ever Dreyer.

@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 4 года назад
Storing dry food in jars isn't traditional canning. It's simply storing food, using canning jars as the container. For long term storage, if you use canning lids and a vacuum sealer and/or O2 absorbers, that will work. Then, put the metal ring on the jar to hold the lid in place, if the vacuum seal fails. I don't know anything about plastic rings. The commonly available 1 piece plastic lids sold for canning (mason) jars are good for short term storage. I don't think they'll hold a vacuum seal, as the one's I've seen don't have the applicable gasket, inside. Hope this helps. If I have misunderstood your question, please let me know.

This is for storage of dry foods. Wet foods must be frozen, water bath or pressure canned, Method depends on the particular food. For example, low acid peas must be pressure canned for food safety. Some high acid fruit products may be water bath canned.

Properly stored white rice has a 30+ year shelf life. Brown rice shelf life is about a year because the oils in the husk will turn rancid. Keeping brown rice in the refrigerator or freezer will prolong the life a little longer.

Thank you for this video and I really enjoy your channel... I need to get one of these... one question though. I notice you put the ring on after it is sealed shut. That’s different than when canning because they say to remove the rings. Does it even matter for this type of storage?
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 4 года назад
In canning, food & moisture can be trapped between the lid and ring, causing both to rust. Thus, it is better to remove the rings, wash exterior of the jar and lid. Wash the rings and store them for future use. Also, with the rings removed, it is easier to spot a jar that has become unsealed, for some reason. For dry storage, if you have the rings, use them, if you like. Since moisture isn't present, rust is far less likely. The ring is convenient when you open the jar and don't use all the contents. You will want a ring to close the jar, unless you decide to vacuum seal again, very shortly.

The trouble with all these vacuum seal systems is I can’t tell how much of a vacuum is being pulled on my mason jars. I put a vacuum gauge in the jar and ran the vacuum system, the gauge just started to move off 0 and the thing shut off. Just because the lid pops down and you can’t get it off with your fingers doesn’t mean you jar has a good seal with most of the air sucked out of the jar.

You need a jar that has a canning lid for the accessory attachment to work; regular lids don't work with it. Also, you don't know the quality of the glass of an odd jar - it will be under pressure, and you don't want it to break on you!

Is there a reason to put rings on the jars after they have been sealed? Thanks.
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 4 года назад
If the seal fails, most dry foods will still remain safe to eat long after the seal failed. (Vacuum sealing simply extends the normal shelf life of the food by reducing oxidation. Putting the ring back on, after sealing, ensures the lid stays in place, if the seal fails. With wet canning, the lid is removed to prevent rust from anything trapped under the lid. And, if that seal fails, we want to know about it, as the food is unsafe to eat after a few hours. FWIW.... I leave the rings off off wet canned foods and put them on vacuum sealed foods. For regular storage in mason jars, I use the plastic caps sold to fit them. Hope this helps.

Can u reuse jars, lids, rings? How did u sanitize everything?
@freedomhomesteadky
@freedomhomesteadky 6 лет назад
Jars, yes. Rings, yes. Lids, it’s not recommended, but I always inspect mine and re-use the ones that look new-ish. I don’t want to use ones that have rust or dents, but stains don’t bother me. Gotta make sure the seal is in good shape. I washed my jars on the sanitizing setting on the dishwasher.

@@freedomhomesteadky how do i sanitize jars without a dishwasher
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 4 года назад
@@5257Lee As long as the jars and lids are clean, that's all that's needed for all pressure canning and for waterbath canning when the processing time is 10 minutes or more. The canning process, in both these cases automatically sterilizes the jars along with the contents in the jar. There are a few waterbath items that are only processed for less than 10 minutes that require a sterilized jar. Hope this helps.

I use a handheld vacuum sealer that seals the lid onto the jar. Less expensive, unless you're already own a Food Saver, which I don't.

Tangi can your food saver be used for tomatoes , green beans etc. Or is it for only dry ingredients? Thanks
@Whitney_Sews
@Whitney_Sews 6 лет назад
Nancy Keim I'm not Tangi, but wanted to answer your question. You can only safely seal cans with dry goods using the food saver. The types of foods you asked about need to be pressure canned or water bath canned (depends on acid level for which method) to be shelf stable.

I saw that if you put on another canning lid then seal it will prevent the other one from popping off. This seems to happen with regular lid but not the wide mouth one.

I believe this method only works for dry storage or dehydrated items. Liquid most likely require a pressure canning or water bath depending on Acidity to be shelf stable.

It's vacuum sealing but NOT actually "canning". Using reusable jars is more economical in the long run than wasteful plastic bags. You can reseal the jar after each use, whereas a bag will only get resealed one or two more times (since you need to cut off a large portion of the top with each use), and then it will be thrown out and replaced with another pricey bag.

Sometimes rice or other pointy items can poke holes on the vacuum bags, then you lose the vacuum.
