How to: Volvo C30 S40 V50 C70 T5 Serpentine Belt & Tensioner Replacement

How to replace the serpentine belts, along with tensioner removal, I will be replacing the alternators tension on a Volvo C30 T5. Similar procedure can also be found on the S40, V50, and C70 models. A slipping belt will squeal or chirp, this sound may come and ago and can be more noticeable during a morning dew or in the rain. Depending on the severity, this can disappear once the vehicle warms up. Sometimes you can apply a dressing to a squeaking or squealing belt, but for the most part that’s just a temporary fix and the noise will eventually come back. #volvo #volvoc30 #volvot5

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-jack
-jack stand
-T25 driver
-T30 driver
-10mm socket
-13mm socket
-side cutters
-3/8” drive ratchet
-3/8” drive 3” extension
-3/8” drive swivel joint
-safety glasses
Procedure:
-remove the wheel and place a jack stand under the subframe
-remove the 3 T25 torx screws on the rear of the fender liner.
-then 5 more T25 torx screws at the front of the fender liner
-remove the two 10mm plastic nuts on the inside of the fender liner
-remove the one T30 torx screw for the belly pan
-remove the fender liner
-using a T50 torx driver and a 3/8” ratchet, rotate the first tensioner clockwise to remove the tension and then remove the belt
-to remove a belt when you can’t relieve the tensioner, you’ll have the cut off the old belt as there isn’t any alternative methods
-to cut the belt, just use side cutters, it’s not hard but be careful so nothing flies back at you
-to replace the alternator tensioner, first you’ll need to remove the ac tensioner which is held on with a 13mm bolt
-pull the tensioner straight out
-now remove the alternator tensioner
-compare to old and new tensioners to ensure they are the same
-install the new tensioner, there is an alignment pin so you’ll know the tensioner is properly seated
-I cleaned up the threads of the bolts with a wire brush and applied a little medium grade thread locker
-to install the new belt, I’ve found it’s easiest to go from the top and push the belt down and then ensure it’s seated on the alternator
-pull it over on the ac compressor’s pulley
-then pull the tension back on the tensioner and slide the belt over the tensioner’s pulley
-reinstall the ac tensioner
compare the old and new belts by holding them between your fingers to verify they’re the same size
-again using the same process, remove the tension off the tensioner and install the belt
-install the fender liner
-install the screws in by hand, just to make sure everything is seated correctly
-on the door side of the fender, the liner has a tab which clips behind the fender’s trim
-finish install the screws, then tighten everything down
-reinstall the wheel and you’re done

Not referring to a stripped bolt, rather the method provided to swing the tensioner out of the way- it is a Torx ~50? but material is too soft. and cast, so not precise.The actual tensioner casting deforms easily, which will allow it to snap back while you are holding it out of the way, against spring tension, When this happens, it can easily break the stop for the spring, rendering the tensioner useless.

This video is very detail, clean verbal guidence. I have a 2005 v50 T5, that I picked up for $1000. Some reason I lost the a/c & alternator ... I realizd the belt is MIA, and I was confused if this was a multi serpentine belt system. This video really really helps alot.

Not so easy if the (inner, alternator) tensioner has failed, which is very common, because the alternator tensioner is a poorly, nearly designed part. A t-50 torx socket, in aluminum alloy casting to hold a 40 pound spring, shows lack of conscious thought in the design. Because of this, it is quite common to have the torx bit deflect under tension, and slip out of the hole, at which point the tensioner snaps back, breaking the internal stop, which also retains the spring. When this happens (not if) you will have to remove at least the bottom 2 alternator bolts and loosen the top alternator bolt, and swing the alternator forward to extract the tensioner. and locate another tensioner. Warranty the other one based on a fatal design flaw. There is a way to save this design, though. Simply drill and tap a 10x1.5 LH thread hole where the torx socket hole is, and thread a short 10x1.5 LH thread bolt into it and tighten, using high strength (red) threadlocker. Once the threadlocker has hardened, you can use a regular socket (of whatever head size bolt you installed) to rotate the tensioner out of the way, and install or remove the belt. Just a note, we refer to bolt sizes by their thread diameter, and specify head diameter separately. (i.e. "10mm bolt with a 13mm head")

Trying to do this now. If I don’t have stripped bolt, does that mean I don’t have to remove the outer tensioner?

i've unfortunately encountered I have the double pin tensioner; a real pain to get back in place even with my experience. i've had it out of place to replace my alternator. now it's finally back in it's spot. for everybody that needs to replace the double pinned tensioner, i'd recommend to unscrew the lower 2 bolts of the alternator, and loosen the top one. also unscrew the airhose to the airmass meter. hang up the alternator with a cabletie or something to make room for the tensioner to get back in place.

4DIYers Great. I've changed the T belt in my Volvo 855t twice so I'm familiar with the process. Just haven't dealt with the vvt pulleys on the camshafts in the C70. Local shop gets $1,000 for the job. $300 in parts and I'll pocket the rest.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 6 лет назад
As far as I know there isn't any specific procedure. To be safe, I would line up the timing marks before removing the belt and as an added safety, make your own marks with a paint marker. You might also be able to find a procedure on another Volvo, the C30, C70, V50, and S40 is all part of the P1 platform so repair procedures are the same or similar.

Looks like this is on my list of things to do as I have chirping which is likely a slightly slip on one of the belts. I plan to replace both belts and tensioners as the vehicle is 15 years old. Are the two tensioners that you removed the same part number as I can only find one list on the suppliers website?

in the Volvo theres a bracket with the pulley wheel do I need to change whole thing or just wheel pulley??
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 4 года назад
The bracket part would be the tensioner, so that has a spring assembly and they can fail over time too. It's usually best to change the whole thing. Not all companies allow for just the pulley to be replaced, it's cheap insurance to replace the whole thing and if you're paying a shop and the tensioner portion fails, you don't have to pay twice for basically the same job.
