advance mountaineering course technique - Snow carft - any activity of ascending & descending on snow is known as snow craft. Slushy snow conditions are ideal but nature don't work according to us , we have to adjust ourselves.
In this video we will learn about various techniques of ascending & descending so that we can walk through any snow conditions during outdoor activities in future.we will also discuss uses of ice axe and snow boots. various techniques discussed in this video are :
1.Marching
2.Duck step
3.Zig-zag/Traverse
4.Side step
5.Single vertical
6.Double vertical
7. Anchoring position
8. Plunging
1. Marching- general style of walking on snow like we do on any other terrain.
Gradient- Horizontal
2. Duck step- walk like a duck with heels together.
Gradient- gentle
3. Zig-zag/ traverse- walk in a diagonal manner.we use bucket step/soup plate technique for changing direction.
Gardient-steep.
4. Side step-walk by using snow boots edge (inner or outer) which is in mountain side to firmly make your step.
Gradient-steep.
usage- ascend & descend.
5. Single vertical- walk with hitting both toe & ice axe in a horizontal manner.feet should be straight for firm grip on Snow.
usage- for fast ascend & descend.
6. Double vertical-it's an important technique used when we carry heavy load.Hold ice axe by both hand and place in front of both legs.
Gradient- steep
usage- ascend & descend.
7. Anchoring position- in this technique we use ice axe in a diagonal manner with both hand as an anchor using it's beak and tail part for better grip.it's most secure way in difficult section.
Gradient- extremely steep
usage - ascend & descend
8. Plunging- it's a fast way of traversing through snow using both feet in straight & stretch manner.
Gradient- Horizontal-gentle
usage- descending
Tips-
1.Always tie ice axe with an accessory cord & attach with your seat harness to prevent ice axe fall during climbing.
2.During switchback /bucket step technique turn towards mountain side not valleyside to prevent oneself fall.
3.Always Hold ice axe on mountain side .
4.Take next step only after positioning first step firmly .
