You’re so right that walking w/ a cane doesn’t look ridiculous, waddling when you walk does. I was so resistant to using a cane. My sister finally told me to stop risking a fall. I took her advice and feel so much more confident now that I walk with a cane. Now it feels awkward to walk without it. I happened to spot a neighbor the other day hobbling down his driveway & could see how bad that looks.

Facts. I really think I look 👀 bad walking with a cane 🦯 but this is probably a better option than messing up anything else

Fact: there are fashionable canes with colors and fun designs on them. Anyway, who is judging? I rather walk with a cane, then fall and than not walk at all.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! You taught me how to (correctly) walk with my cane beginning on the injured side, which feels so much better. Adjust my cane height properly which was incorrectly done when fitted. They focused on if I was left/right handed but not height. Now was stride is stronger, steadier,less fatigue in shoulders, everything.

Thinking about it - in past times, if we had some joint pain when walking, we'd just use a stick. Nowadays it seems to have been elevated to a statement. One day we don't use a walking aid - the next we do and it seems to be something that the world has a right to know about! The attitude has gone very awry and it needs to be reeled back in :) . I'm going to feel extra self conscious, when I next use my stick, because I don't look anything like a hiker.

hello! ive been watching your videos for a bit, and was wondering if you have any tips for someone with hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome? almost all of my joints are hypermobile and as a result, my hip flexors have become incredibly tight, causing a pelvic tilt. It's really painful and most things just tend to hurt. Thanks!

I began walking with a cane years back. After a few months I realized it was the shoes I was wearing. I switched my shoes and all became well within a few days I no longer needed the cane.

Thanks, you two, for putting this video out. I am learning fast. I have an eight mile walk, ahead of me, as I need to personally hand a form in at the local surgery. I have neither stick nor walker nor crutch and, the last time I did it, my poor (well - my feet were bad, too, and I might pre bandage them this time) hip suffered for days after. So, I have found a potentially suitable stick in the garden. I did not realise it had to be used on the side opposite the problem - so that's one instantly valuable bit of information. I'm going to practice with it, today, and then it gets it's full deployment when I don't have the twinges. If it really helps - I may invest in something purpose made. I don't really need any help, yet, for my normal walking and ambling about - eight miles on tarmac (particularly when one has to keep leaping up onto road verges to avoid oncoming traffic) is a beast. Even if the reduction, in recovery time, is small - it's worth it.

I have hypermobile spectrum disorder (though I suspect hEDS) and a retroverted acetabulum. My hip pain has gotten significantly worse and I've developed a limp in the last few months. I'm seriously considering a cane while I wait for PT to start. Thanks so much for these videos!
@HaydenHaystackArts
@HaydenHaystackArts 2 года назад
I am also on the HSD/GJHS-> EDS train too. Fighting the genetics clinic who say it's not necessary bc of the lack of hEDS gene knowledge... (Hoping for the gene to come out of hiding sometime soon!) I am looking forward to using my cane on bad days/during flare ups. Plus trying to do PT, but as you know, everything always goes wrong.

Thank you for the information, and taking the time to make this video, humans! I'm somewhere on the hypermobile spectrum. Not a lot of advice where I am on how to manage it, or testing into the specific type so someone can figure it out from other people's info. And currently, it appears as though I'm in dear need of a cane at the ripe old age of twenty. Specifically because of my knees and hips, even with efforts to counteract that on my part, but also a bit from my ankles even with binding them, too. You've aided me immensely in figuring this thing out. Now I just gotta practice walking with it, it seems.
@TheMazinoz
@TheMazinoz Год назад
yes, hypermobility syndrome/HEDS?/HSD too, plus OA and CPPD at 69 and told to use a cane. But I had been using one due to pain in my 30's. Also look at hypermobile hinged knee braces like Donjoy and others. Really help, but don't immobilise the joint, just stop the overextension.
@batintheattic7293
@batintheattic7293 Год назад
It's not a condition I know anything about but I can imagine what it is and it sounds horrific. Your joints flex more than is good for them? Holy hell that must be terrible. Both of you have my sympathy.

Same. I’ve been diagnosed with AVN as well, and I’m about to be 40. 😟 Wasn’t surprised though; my grandmother had both hips and knees replaced by the time she was 55, and my mother had her third knee replacement last February. Good luck to you, sir! 😀

When I use the cane, hip pain flares up intensely after about 30 mins of walking, however if pushing a grocery cart (one-handed of course) I can wallk all over the store with zero discomfort. What, if anything, does this suggest?

Honestly, when I tried to transition from one crutch to a cane, I found the cane very wobbly whereas the crutch more stable because the top of it anchors against my side. After using a cane my back, shoulders and neck were painful.

I have been debating on getting a walker I have used my cane and it doesn't help at all. my sciatica has become so bad my hip is more times than not in chronic pain, it's horrible. I'm only 34 turning 35 but I injured my bad really bad at work when I was only 21 and I fell last year and I swear damaged my kneecap. I have a doctors appointment this Monday I'm going to just double check and see if that's a route I should go. I wobble and when I walk past someone I almost fall to the side. I am constantly worried they think I'm creepy and trying to get closer....

Hi whatadollslife, I do agree with you on this, my hemi-walker has saved my ass from a hard fall several times; I just miss being agile on my feet like I was before my stroke. But that was then, and this is now, right? So I will keep moving forward! Godspeed and God bless you! I did fall hard once here in my home;as I stepped on my own foot with my paralyzed leg.It was NOT fun at all!

Sorry that my question has nothing to do with hip pain. But I trust you guys to be able to explain this to me. And you guys post regularly. My name is Amber. And my chiropractor just told me my mask is too tight. He said my mask inhibits the movement of my mandible bones (and others that I don’t remember) and that that restriction inhibits the skull movements necessary to distribute CSF over the brain. I’m not a medical student. But can you please explain that more to me? Also what could be the long term effects of not getting the proper amount of CSF over the brain? How bad could it be for those who have to wear masks for long periods of time? Thanks guys. You rock! 🤗💕
