2-This video shows my Nanna demonstrating how to ward off the evil eye - a Calabrian folk healing ritual. A step-by-step procedure is below. Please note that there are many variations of this practice. Blog Post here: nipotidiagata.wordpress.com/2...
The following is my family’s method of protection, or ritual to thwart the evil eye (and determine if you are fascina, or bound by malocchio). Following this, there is also a video showing my Nanna demonstrating this Calabrian folk healing ritual.
Materials:
Glass, Water (3/4 full), Tablespoon, Oil (any oil will do; my Nanna uses vegetable oil)
Steps:
1- Fill a glass 3/4 full with water, and place on flat surface.
2- Pour vegetable oil on tablespoon.
3- While thinking of the person who is ill, dip your thumb into the oil and drop 4 drops in a cross formation (sign of the cross).
4- If the person is fascina, the oil droplets will either “clump” together as one oil puddle on the water’s surface, or make a “horn” shape.
5- If the person is not fascina, the oil droplets will simply fall into the water in separate drops.
6- Repeat until all oil is used.
7- If “commissioned” to perform the ritual, the person would be informed if they are or are not. If they are, they are supposed to feel better after the ritual is complete.

Thank you so much for this! My nonna was from Delianova Calabria and she used to do this when I was a kid. My mother passed away when I was only four and and my nonna raised me. She did this when an animal was injured badly or really sick with no real reason for ill health. I remember our dog got hit by a car and his injuries were quite bad, but after she did this, he was walking in two days. She also did this when a pig that we had was impaled by a bean stick branch and the wound was quite catastrophic and the pig got better. She did this for both people and animals and I only just remembered it the other day. Thank you again for the explanation. ❤❤❤

I am Calabrese too and I know this is true, it helped so many times. There're a lot of superstitions, I have them instilled in me.

Iʻm Portuguese and we do the exact same thing. We call this reading the oil. My grandmother, my great grandmother and two of my great aunts were all curandeiras and often removed what we called may olhado or mau olho. It is caused by jealously, either intentional or unintentional.

Hello, yes. I will explain it. When one has signs or symptoms of the evil eye, they do a test with a bowl of water and a tablespoon spoon of olive oil or any oil if you don't have olive, but Olive Oil works the best. Before the person or you of you do it yourself does the test they say a prayer and do the sign of the cross. Now you dip your finger into the Tablespoon of oil and drop the drippings into the water. You should do like three to five of these. If some of the oil droplets come together in one ball and not crooked but stay in one place after they have swirled in the water for ten seconds after being dropped that means you are not cursed with the evil eye. However, if they do come together and some make very weird sloppy shapes and don't stay in one place, you do have the evil eye curse callled Il Malacchio and need to get it off of you. Italians usually seek a priest or an religious enthusiast who gives you prayers and blessings and a cornicello charm to sway off evil curses and spirits. They come in silver or gold or just plastic ones and should be worn at all times.

I'm unclear. Please can you clarify. Do you do this only to determine if you have the evil thing or to get rid of it? I enjoyed your nana very much. It made me homesick for my own Italian grandma who is in heaven now.

@@MaloneMantooth oh lol! So the red pepper is actually a horn or “cornicello”. I have one on my rear view mirror, but for it to protect you against the malocchio while you’re driving, it has to be the red one with the gold crown on top!
