is there a way to change the BPM of the whole project without it affecting the audio/sample?
@MicahWeston
@MicahWeston 2 года назад
Wassup. The whole purpose of warping is to get the sample aligned so that when you due change the tempo the sample speeds up/slows down with it. If you want to change tempo without the sample timing adjusting with the tempo change, I would suggest making sure the audio clip is not warped.

@MicahWeston

It’s many different places to buy music or samples online. Once you have it on your computer you can literally drag it into Ableton OR make a sample folder on your computer and create a folder tab inside of Ableton that allows you to access all of your samples. Do this by looking to the left of the Ableton screen under ‘Places’ there is an icon to ‘Add folder’. Does this help?

Just came across your awesome video, ive got 3 questions can you do another video to this were you show how you made the drum, perc, hi hat and snare pattern and what you would do to mix those. Also what is the down beat you mentioned and please can you make tutorials like this.
@MicahWeston
@MicahWeston 3 года назад
I will most definitely have to do a drum and mixing tutorial in the future. Thanks for your support. Okay, without being super technical, you can think of the down beat as the first note of the loop or the “1” in a single bar. Your metronome clicks like “1-2-3-4” and if you notice, the “1” is the loudest click of the metronome because the metronome is letting you know that the “1” is the down beat. Now when you listen to a drum beat or a sample you will be able to notice the downbeat within it by taking note of the first note or the “1”. So for drums the kick drums USUALLY leads the groove by hitting on the “1”. This is a lot to grasp via a RU-vid comment but i hope this at least puts you in the right direction!

Can you explain what you mean by that? Are you referring to having the ability to play your sample chops on a drum machine pads? I’ve shown that in this video. Ableton also has real MPC quantization grooves you can add to your midi that can give your stuff that old school swing.

Hey man loved the tutorial. I have one question tho how were you able to remove the original drums from the Out Of The Wilderness sample?
@MicahWeston
@MicahWeston Год назад
Wassup! So the drums are actually not removed. Let me explain. So, something to take into account is that the drums on the sample were already kind of "light" sounding, other than that I adjusted the pitch of the sample down (which I believe helped sort of, soften up the drums more). The last thing I did was roll off the low end of the sample (take out the bass frequencies of the sample) . Doing this gave me room in the mix to add my own drums and which completely overpowered the drums that were present in the sample.

@MicahWeston
@MicahWeston 3 года назад
Wassup. I appreciate it. This may be hard to describe via a comment but I pitch bended the audio clip that played at 1:10. It gave the sample a tape stop effect. You can google some tape stop VSTs as well though and automate it at points where you want a transition.
@scammin4pigham150
@scammin4pigham150 2 года назад
I'm confused with the first sample you left the original drums in the sample but you can only hear your drumming when you play the full song. How you do that?
@MicahWeston
@MicahWeston 2 года назад
What you are referring to is a lot more simple than you think. Yes, the sample i use has drums in it already (the original drums) but I put my own drums on top. The drums of the original sample are not harsh (loud and heavy sounding) to begin with so with a few tweaks to the sample it leaves room in the mix for you to add drums over. The tweaks I usually make that creates room in a sample for me to add my own drums is shifting the pitch of the sample. After that sometimes i high pass the low end out of the sample because the low frequencies is usually where the kick drum and bass of the original sample sits. Finally, the sample is always turned down quieter than my own drums that I add. That may be the most important and easiest thing to remember, making sure that the sample is turned down.
@scammin4pigham150

@@MicahWeston I getchya. thanks for the quick reply. So would you say that most producers use this process or a similar process? like j dilla or madlib for example.
@MicahWeston
@MicahWeston 2 года назад
@@scammin4pigham150 No problem and most definitely i think so.There’s tons if mixing tricks you can do to get around the original drums of a sample. So my examples that I shared with aren’t the only ones, but are the most common i believe. A good place to start would be to choose samples that don’t have harsh drums to begin with BUT remember that your creativity can be used to get around those it if you really want to.

@MicahWeston
@MicahWeston Год назад
So in Ableton 11 they updated how it’s laid out. I changed this a while ago so hopefully I remember it correctly but when you have a sample double clicked, you will see the sample maximized at the bottom of the screen you should be able to drag out the window to the left of the sample. When you drag this window to the right it will stretch out more options, for the transpose, detuner and BPM. If i’m not mistaken in Ableton 11 this box is no longer titles sample. why do you use warp straight from here?
@MicahWeston
@MicahWeston 2 года назад
Since uploading this video I don’t always use warp from here straight anymore BUT warp from here straight tells Ableton that you want your initial warp mark to be the “down beat” or the first beat in the bar. So if the bar is counted as 1-2-3-4, then the warp from here straight marker represents the “1” and aligns the rest of the sample after the warp from here straight marker accordingly. One thing I have noticed is that when using this feature it quickly aligns up the sample leaving less work for you (not always though).
