When you use real vinyl and old school samplers its a lot more intuitive to do these dilla style quirks. You have to do it all with your hands so you think of things differently.

The J Dilla Moog Programming Dilla frequently programmed the Moog Synth in a special way to get his iconic bass sounds. It is generally known that he would use square and triangle wave oscillators; a typical starting point for his bass would be as follows: * OSC 1 - triangle at 32” * OSC 2 - square at 16” * OSC 3 - square at 16” He would usually detune OSC 2 & 3 very slightly to get that signature off-key sound and get a little extra resonance. The other setting would be as follows: * FILTER cutoff approx. 95% * Emphasis (resonance) 0-10% * Attack: 0 * Decay: 60% * Sustain: 35-40% * LOUDNESS attack: 0-10% * Decay: 60% * Sustain: 60% (NOTE these percentages are based on where the dial is positioned, from left to right)

Best surprise when I open RU-vid in the morning. I love your videos. For sampling I'm using the Maschine+ or Ableton's Simpler. That was a well-put-together video! Thank you for your comments and for mentioning the common mistakes! I liked the beat until you put your own touch to it, to be honest. I know it was an example, but in my opinion, it took away the soul of the sample and detracted from the J Dilla sound. I'd love to see a tutorial on how J Dilla flips thes samples for Alien Family and adds swings to the beats! Thank you!

@@WillHatton I appreciate your support man, been needing some clear tuition for some time havnt felt like ive progressed for years now really but when I play stuff back I've improved. the problem I have is I cant play an instrument so struggle with the chords and because I use logic and get carried away I end up in a kerfuffle of samples with a million ideas and no progression working in a 16 or 32. splice definitely projected my sound but I feel like it's pretty dead compared to a few years ago and I swear alot of recordings have purposely placed uneditable noise in the background? need to get on the 404 with a turntable for samples but don't have the space atm

How do you keep the tempo of your track without affecting the sample your working on in your simpler. When I change the tempo of my track the track import in the simpler is changing pace also. I dont know if my question is clear but. Anyways thanks for the video
@WillHatton
@WillHatton Год назад
Before changing anything you want to make sure you hit “warp” on your simpler device. If you do this after you’ll have a world of problems!
@mateo-oh2vm
@mateo-oh2vm Год назад
Thank you for your response! I meant project instead of track, my bad. So lets say my tempo of my project is 100bpm, then I import an audio file into my simpler and play with it and find good sampling parts. Then I realise it would fit for a house song so I raise the tempo of my project to 130bpm, but when I do that the sample part I chose are now playing faster and dont sound as good :(
@WillHatton

I think you are really speaking for yourself Brother. How we all individually handle our samples defines our individuality. That's what makes us .. us. I've listened to your material in the past and your sound is basic and generic, and that's cool, I still have love for you as a brother, just not your music. The only way any of this works for us is that we are different than the rest of the heard, not just different but this difference is reflected in all the views and subs your material might get. Work flow improvements, how deep your pockets are, the equipment you can afford, plugins, none of that really matters. What matters is your personal journey, the parts of your life that has inspired you to the point where you are today. Lot of people don't understand that. For some this could be - food stamps. eviction, violence, incarceration, having a single parent or no parent, the streets, abuse: mental, physical or even sadly, sexual, being broke, hungry, angry. lost love, the loss of a loved one, depression, chemical dependence, and for others it could mean, love, the birth of a new child, the love and appreciate of music and or musicians, bands, parties, vacations, trips, happiness, the love and nurture of a parent(s), success, personal goals met, being fearless. It could also mean many other things, life events, or a combination of the two groups I just mentioned. this is were music really comes from. How has your life bleed into your music? There are a lot of videos on what buttons to push, and your video is yet another one of these endless videos on the subject but the videos that has the potential to help all of us make better tracks comes from within.

my friend who makes music who has asperger's syndrome think in his warped deluded mind that all music needs to be bang on time if he went in to someone home studio to do music with them and the parts were off time he would be let me sort it for you and when it comes to adjusting anything simple that most people can do in a couple of seconds with a mouse click he take his time with and makes a real song and dance out of it its annoying

Chop loop is not so creative , using stab chord and one shot beat and note make you able to more mess arround with your favorite record, but it's a long process and need patience , it's more rewarding too...
@tzodearf2596
@tzodearf2596 Год назад
Want a new idea? Find an old one and vamp. For instance, strip the chords to brief hits to punctuate the end of a rhythmic phrase. Or, let any melodic parts be reduced to sparse but regular blips and let the drums kick most of the beat. Leave those old soul records to collect dust in the crates because nobody listened to most of that crap anyway. Use them sparingly so your beat doesn't sound like the average porn groove.
