Nervous about washing your or your kids' down jacket? In this video we'll show you how to wash and dry a down jacket safely and return it to its original warmth and loft. Grangers Down Clothing Wash Kit- www.littleadve...
Your instructions worked for my Hugo Boss down jacket. I used decathlon down detergent, and the jacket came out as clean as new. Drying worked well also, although I used tennis balls. Fluffy renewed down jacket!🎉
Thank you for the great video managed too save my RAB Gillet after watching your short video. I actually washed it my hand in the sink with HOT water, regulator detergent and softener. As it was drying found lots of clumps. Thought I had ruined the GILLET, I manged to save it bye taking it too the laundrette tumble trying it on a low temp inside out stuck 3 tennis balls in with it and after 40 mins the loft came back and it was back too normal. ❤❤❤
Thanks so much for this video. My favorite down jacket needs cleaning, and I've been hesitant to do it myself. But, I've gone ahead and purchased the product you recommended. I'll be sure to save this video for future reference.
The tumble dryer is key. I washed a thick down vest in the washing machine. My heart sank when it came out .. but I let it air dry. It was a disaster. So I brought it to the dry cleaners, and asked them to wash it normally, and then dry it. They did, and it came back looking like new. So even if you have a disaster, trust me : it is retrievable.
Real down has feathers that contain natural oils. Heat will release those oils and put off an awful smell. I would recommend tumble drying with zero heat along with tennis balls and let the jacket air-dry completely in the Sun ☀️
Please don’t use tennis balls. They’re way too heavy and can damage your jacket’s ability to hold the stuffed filling. Purchase some actual soft dryer balls instead. I used tennis balls and now my puffy jacket had teeny leaks of stuffing here and there from its surface
Hi, you can air dry them. It will take quite a while through (days). I would let your jacket drip dry from a hanger and then in a couple of times a day redistribute the down by giving it a good shake. As it gets dryer you'll probably want to shake the down around more regularly to break up the clumps of down. This method does work it just takes time a bit of persistence...
Hi there, good question. The truth is we haven't tried washing a few jackets together. I'm thinking that the problem will be wet down getting twisted in the arms of jackets being washed together and this might damage the down. You certainly wouldn't want to put them in a tumble dryer together as jackets will twist together and restrict the movement of the down. Personally I probably wouldn't risk it...
Can I let the coat just dry by itself? I don’t have a dryer. I have a Zara coat, very beautiful, but it sheds some feathers on the inside and the feathers cling on black pants or tights usually.

Hey it is the Grangers down wash kit. We sell it on our website: www.littleadventureshop.co.uk/collections/clean-and-repair/products/grangers-down-clothing-wash-kit Or If you google 'Grangers down wash kit' it should come up!
Do you have any strategies for those that do not have a dryer, just the washing machine? Think I could use a hairdryer or should I just let it dry in the sun?

I did as said on the instructions: washed it at 30°C and then went to the laundry place self service and put my jacket in the drying machine (mind you the smallest one there was 13kg) put 3 big tennis balls in with the jacket for 13 minutes first at 40°C (lowest temperature possible at that place) and my winter jacket from tommy hilfigher is ruined. some parts have that material, other parts dont't have any.. I am feeling desperate cause I went to the landry&drying service and it is closed..So I have to wait till Monday and ask them if they can do anything.
Hi, sorry for taking a while to reply. I've washed a jacket before and think that I have ruined it. You can wash it again and have another go. I think you're going to have to dry it for considerably longer than 13mins to get the down to dry out, it does take quite a while. If the down isn't fully dry it will clump together and look like you've ruined your jacket. I hope you've fixed your jacket!
@@LittleAdventureShop Thank you for your reply! Yes, I've managed to fix it. I just had to manually move the clumps and shake it every hour or so and let it air dry for 2 days. Now it looks back to normal, thankfully. Next time I know what to do.

I got two white jackets. I made same stupid mistake twice. I washed wirh other things in machine now no longer white and no puff anymore just look flat. I just washed and dried normally. Jackets were over £300 each. I not only need to try rewashing like this. I need to figure out how to get them white again.
Hey Rebecca, just wondering with the Grangers kit when would you use the 'Down Repel' i'm looking to wash my Moncler downjacket but which product to use, I have both the downwash and downrepel! Thanks

Can I use those balls in a big drum washing machine at my local laundrette I have a few down filled coats to wash before they go into storage over the summer?
Hi, the balls go in the tumble dryer (not the washing machine). I guess that would be fine at the laundrette, they just tend to be bigger than domestic machines.
Hi, yes I think you would be OK without the central agitator. We don't have Tide here but I think it's a standard detergent. You would be better using a plain washing soap or a specific down wash so the down in your jacket isn't coated with the extra colour enhancers etc in modern detergents.
Hi, thanks for your question. I've tried washing a few down jackets at once but the arms of the jackets have all come out tightly twisted around each other and I worry that this can damage the down. I would probably wash a down jacket and down gillet (vest) together but otherwise (annoyingly) I would stick to washing jackets individually.
What do you do if you don't have a tumble dryer? I don't trust cleaning services since there are so few left and I can't find any in my area with high ratings. I'm on year 3 without any wash and it's deseperately needing it. I read someone using a hair dryer, but that must have taken hours, haha. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!! 😊

I've personally never tried the hair dryer method, if you have a thin down jacket it might be worth giving it a go, however, if you have a thick one it's going to take a long time!!
@@LittleAdventureShop Thank you for the reply! We have a heated bathroom and I can regulate the temp. Plus good airing. Might work to just let it dry out there with the temp cranked a little. I'll make sure to shake it every 2h. If I do that with the hairdryer as well, I'll reply back if it worked or not! 🤣 Thanks once again! Hope you have a wonderful day 😊👌🏻
Thanks for your sharing experience, that’s make me more confident washing my down jacket! I have a bit query about what temperature you set for drying the jacket? I see from the dryer I have, there are 4 options and 2 of them have the lowest temperature 30 degree. Should I choose that?
I got a blue Hoodrich coat but it’s got mud stains plus it got stuck in the back of my bike and I’ve tried to wash mud out of it before but it kinda just faded and was still there do yk how I can fully get rid of the muck
I've washed it in the machine with another rain jacket and laundry detergent. After air drying, it looks ruined. Do I need to wash it again in the machine with liquid soap or can I put the dried jacket straight into the dryer? Or can I perhaps just dunk it in water to wet it before drying in the tumbler?
What about a long down coat? And could you try to dry the coat in a washing machine that has the drying option also? It is of course not the same as tumble dryer but have a machine that has this drying option. I do need to wash my long down coat and since it was expensive I am trying to gather as much information as possible prior to washing it.
How fast a spin should the jacket go in for when it is in the tumble dryer? Also is it safe to do this when the brand’s logo isn’t embroidered? I have experienced the logo peeling off before. Thanks in advance for your help :)
Hi there, good questions! I think tumble drying is going to increase the risk of a brand logo coming off, particularly if it has already started to peel. Having said that we've never had any problems with logos peeling after washing and tumble drying. You cold turn your jacket inside out to prevent a logo rubbing against the drum of the machine, this would probably help. Our tumble dryer doesn't give spin speeds. The spin cycle at the end of a wash is going to be far higher than anything a tumble dryer is going to reach during the drying phase. So I think as long as the jacket is being turned frequently then that should be fine. Thanks for the questions, I hope this is of some help.
My question is because I have a top loader washer. Could I just wash it by hand with the right detergent warm water squeeze it gently and put it in the dryer with the balls would that work?
Hi, you might want to let the jacket drip dry a bit to get more of the water out before putting in the dryer - but I don't see why it wouldn't work in theory.
I have a fiber jacket that I washed and this caused the filling inside it to clump. Can you help me fix it? I love this jacket too much ، I took the jacket to the dry cleaners, but they told me that it cannot be returned as it was, and that the feathers inside it cannot be same like before . I have balls of wool, can it help? Please answer
Hi, it depends on the fill of your jacket. if the insulation is synthetic (fiber) then probably the filling has torn and this can't be fixed. If the fill is down/feather then wash it again and tumble dry - give wool balls a go and you should be able to get the loft back. If you're not sure what the filling of your jacket is made of then this video may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B1IYmjJMCjw.htmlsi=bIAGhkzbH5gKnUHM

Hi yes, because most "normal" washing powders and liquids have additives which enhance the colour etc (all the marketing blurb). The issue is that this can leave a residue on the down and so reduce the loft after washing. Specific down wash is really simple and just cleans the down and doesn't leave a residue.
Hi, the special down cleaners clean the down without leaving residue on the down fibers. "Normal" detergents tend to have extra colour enhancers - blah blah that can add weight to the down fibres so you struggle to get the original loft back in the down.
May I please know what temperature low heat really is? I have an AEG tumble dryer which comes with so many programs that stress me out. Please help. Thank you

Hi there, I've unfortunately only found your video now, once I've already washed and air dried my jackets (3 if them!!!!) I didn't spin them, so they were dripping wet out the washing machine and then air dried them. The down has all clumped and doesn't feel completely dry. Can i still tumble dry at this point, or should i wet them again first?
Hi there you can let the jacket dry naturally. Squeeze as much water out as you can without wringing it. It's going to take a around couple of days to dry out. Come back periodically and give it a good shake (mostly when its quite dry) to redistribute the down.
Hi, I'm not that sure - but I doubt it matters. I would probably wash it the right way round as the outside of the jacket is probably more dirty than the inside.
Hi, with synthetic puffer jackets you don't need to be as careful with the drying process. You can just wash and hang them up to dry/ tumble dry/ air dry. Most synthetic insulation is a sheet sewn into the garment do it stays in place when you wash it and doesn't clump at one end of the baffle like down does.
Hi there, thanks for your message. Ideally you want to balls to have a bit of weight to them or be prickly so they bounce the jacket around a bit in the dryer. My dryer balls are really soft, light and smooth so I don't think they would be ideal. If your concerned just stop the dryer a few times and give your jacket a really good shake to move the down around.
Hi, yes you can air dry a down jacket. I'm planning on trying it very soon. From what I've heard it will take quite a while ( a few days). You'll want to hag it to drip dry first and then once it's not soaking wet keep going back to it a shaking up the down to make sure it doesn't clump.
Down is just specifically the inner feathers of a bird, which are smaller, softer and have more insulation properties. So practically speaking you treat them the same
Hi no I don't think so. Just let the machine do the spin and then allow to air dry - it will take a day or so. keep going back to the jacket and shaking it out particularly when it is getting quite dry.
Hello. Super helpful video. The cost I need to wash has a fur trim. If I put that in a bag and tied it with elastic of you think it might come out ok? I am thinking that might keep most of the water out. Any thoughts really, appreciated 😊
Hi there, good question. To be honest I've only ever had coats with removable faux fur trim. But have a look at this article it looks pretty comprehensive: www.thespruce.com/how-to-clean-faux-fur-coats-2145795 If it's faux fur I think the washing part looks OK but you'll need to be careful drying it. Real fur is going to be more tricky, maybe try your plastic bag idea but I think the water will move up the fabric regardless of how tight you manage to tie the bag on. Let me know how you get on!
Hi, thanks for your question. I've tried washing a few down jackets at once but the arms of the jackets have all come out tightly twisted around each other and I worry that this can damage the down. Hi. I have 1 down feather jacket and 2 synthetic puffy jackets to wash (all adult), and a 10kg washing machine. Would it be too ambitious to wash them all together at once?
Hi! Great video - Can I still tumble dry a polyester puffer jacket on low heat, the same as a feather-insulted down jacket? A lot of videos I’m seeing is regarding expensive down jackets/North Face where they are real feathers, but I want to mainted the puffer jacket’s loft through drying it and not line hanging it as the garment’s suggestion.
Hi, yes I think the synthetic fabric is fine to tumble dry. It's much easier to to wash than down. I would just go on a low medium heat. It shouldn't take too long to dry as the polyester doesn't absorb water.
@@LittleAdventureShop cheers for the reply! I washed and dried it as per my normal cycles, but with a lower heat setting and you were right with it drying fast! The only issue is redistributing all of the polyester loft, but a good shake and parting it over the coat seems to work a bit
Hi, I use the delicate cycle, and that has always cleaned the jackets fine… they’ve been grubby but not filthy. I would go with the most gentle cycle that you think will clean your jacket.
Hi, it's best to use a really simple wash liquid (basically a soap) without any colour enhancers... whitening agents etc that go into standard detergents. All of that extra stuff sticks to the down and reduced the loft

Hi, you can let he jacket drip dry off a hanger to get a lot of the water out and then transfer to a warm area and lie flat and keep coming back and shaking it to redistribute the down. It will take a few days to dry properly. Basically don't wring it out too aggressively and don't forget to keep shaking it regularly to keep the down moving and unclumping.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I think the washing may damage the fur. You could try hand washing and drying naturally - try to keep the fur out of the water as mush as possible.... good luck!
Great video , im.using a Samsung inverter dryer , it inly has a cotton or synthetic drying mode , it takes ages to dry our washing , tried 30 mins on synthetic , still really wet and felt, would you try the cotton setting
Hi, it does take quite a while to dry the down out - I'm not sure about cotton settings... I guess that is quite hot as you don't need to worry about cotton shrinking etc. I've had issues in the past with damaging the velcro patches on clothing by washing/drying them too hot, so I would be careful on the hotter settings.
I'm not sure if that grangers detergent has fragrance and would be ok for eczema? I'm wondering if a small amount of my ecover zero liquid detergent would be okay and if air drying with a dehumidifier is an ok alternative to tumble drying.
Thanks for your comment, you can definitely skip the tumble dryer but you should give the jacket a good shake out every hour or so during the drying period to the down gets re-distributed. The Grangers down wash doesn't have any added fragrances, it's a very mild cleaner in comparison with "normal" washing products. That's why it's good for down. I don't know about the Ecover detergent, if you give it a go let me know how you get on!
@@LittleAdventureShop I went ahead and washed it with ecover. There are a lot of clumps. I imagine it will fluff up again as it dries if I massage/shake it? I'm not sure how long that'll take with the dehumudifier. I might have to borrow a tumble drier.
Hi, you just need to be patient and tease the down out as it drys. It's probably going to take a few days to dry out without a dryer so keep coming back to the jacket and shaking the down around so it separates and drys fully.
