Pete I have been following your videos for over a year now . Your videos have taught me alot about tall fescue .I'm going to renovate my lawn this year here in virginia , zone 7a . Was going to go to a warm season grass because I was pulling my hair out with the fescue and weeds and have tons of sunlight . But thanks to you I have a great game plan and I'm not giving up on the awesome tall fescue . God bless you Pete.

Great advice on watering, bro! I see too many people around here watering in the late afternoon and evening. I even see some people that have an irrigation system watering way too much! Also, the waiting to water at least one day after mowing is good because mowing a soggy wet lawn will cause clumping issues, especially if you mulch the clippings; and you can damage the turf if the soil is too soggy. You'll however want a little moisture in the dirt to prevent a dust storm when mowing, too! Congrats on the 11k and to Tim Scott! I actually see you're at 12K now! How great is that! Have a great week bro!

I have an irrigation system that talks to a local weather station so when it rains it turns off automatically that day and usually the next day. I set mine up to run about two to three times a week around this time of year (I'm in Southern NJ) through maybe June. I might move up to 3 to 4 times a week during those 90+ days in July and August if the lawn needs more frequent watering. Adjust your time so that you still deliver about an inch of water a week. GCI is dead on about allowing the soil to dry out some (not get hard packed) to continue to encourage the grass to grow deeper roots, to help weaken any weeds, and to reduce fungal growth.

thanks for the vid. i've known the concepts for some time now but this was a good kick in the pants to pick myself up a rain gauge. which i did. and it appears what I thought was deep watering wasn't even close. i need to test some more areas. looking like 3hrs! for some zones to produce an inch. seems/feels crazy, but if that's what it is, that's what it is. i suspect i wasted a lot of water last year (my first season) watering the wrong way. guestimating. or relying on the "smart" controller, which I'm not sure I trust. thanks for sharing.

Hey Pete, thanks for the great video man. You are a fountain of knowledge. Although I live in south Florida and have warm season St. Augustine turf, I apply your logic to meet my needs here. One thing I did last year that saved me time and money was to erect my own weather station at my house to tie into my Rachio sprinkler controller. Here in SFla, we have such finicky weather, you really cant set a watering schedule. The weather station reports data directly to my sprinkler controller and with the settings I implemented, it knows when the yard needs water or not. Set it and forget it and it has worked flawlessly so far. Have you ever considered using an onsite weather station? After a bunch of research, I went with the Ambient Weather Wifi Osprey. Check it out, it may be worth your time.

Pete, try a 5004+PSAMR from Rain Bird. You will get pressure regulation and minimize that misting you have. You will still be able to shut off individual heads. System looks great and looks like you got perfect head -to-head coverage.

Awesome video! so for an inch of water each week is it ideal to do it in one day or 1/2" say Monday and 1/2" Friday? Hey Pete, i'm sure you've noticed a lot of RU-vidrs switching over to the Swardman reel mower but seems like those RU-vidrs do not have Tall Fescue. they're also cutting super low like 1/2". I'm not looking into doing that at all but can Tall Fescue be cut that short and look good? i would think taking that dense turf and cutting that short will only encourage weeds to grow? any thoughts on this?

Nice video, Pete! A couple of comments and observations - By having a tall, dense grass, as you do, it makes it easier to put out measuring cups deep in the grass to measure the amount of water that area of your lawn is getting. Otherwise, without the dense grass to hold the cup in place, the water stream might push your measuring cup around or over. The viewers need to find a way to keep their measuring cup stationary while watering the grass. Also and obviously, if you do not have an irrigation system and you are using a mobile sprinkler, you would have to measure the amount of water every time in order to make sure the lawn in that area gets its required watering each week. Your sprinkler heads close to the edge of the street is concerning because that would put your sprinkler line and heads in the right-of-way for any city, county or utility work there. If the city, county, or utility has something buried in your yard's right-of-way then they can legally, without forewarning, dig up your yard and damage/destroy that area of your sprinkler system. You may want to consider relocating that line and heads along the street out of the right-of-way and aim the heads towards the street rather than aiming away from the street as you done. The t-shirt that you were wearing in this video, Pete, had on it your company logo and phone number. You may want to consider adding your web site address to your t-shirts (and any other clothing) the next time you order more. Just a thought, Pete, because a lot of people will check you out online before calling you. This would also apply to anywhere you have your logo displayed on company vehicles and equipment.
@GCITurf
@GCITurf 6 лет назад
My man Ben!! Whats up bro?!?!?! You always have excellent attention to detail! If your grass is thin just step o it flat to where the cup will stand up or take 3 #2 pencils and use then as stakes to hold the cup up. The other option is to work extra hard this Fall to get your turf thicker. I put the heads 4" away from the road on purpose for coverage reasons. I have been here 7 years and ZERO county road work has been done. If they ever do and damage my system I will simply repair it. The lack of coverage is not equal to me repairing the system once in a blue moon I probably should wear a different shirt. I do not want everyone in the country to be calling my cell number LOL Good advice I will make that change websites are easy....just put .com behind the company name :)

GCI Turf Services I am learning a lot from you, Pete, and I very much appreciate all the knowledge that you share with me/your viewers. The right-of-way issue was as much for your viewers who might copy what you did as it was for you too. You have been lucky so far with no work done there, but one day a utility crew might show up at your house or at a viewer's house and just start digging. It is within their legal right to do so without notice or come knock on your door to let you know. It's easy to anticipate that happening by locating the sprinkler heads along the street outside of the right-of-way and aim them towards the street. You might get some water onto the street, but that's OK. Besides, if you do it that way, you could turn on those street zones sprinklers when neighborhood garage sale customers want to park in your yard. :-) The measuring cup comment was true, but I was also just being a bit envious of your beautiful, thick lawn, Pete. Thanks again for sharing, Pete. Have a great weekend!

Another GREAT video... I look forward to them everyday! One thing I was wondering Pete, could you do a video specifically about the Humic12 vs. Air-8 and what their similarities are as well as what their differences are? In my mind, it seems like they are similar in helping the soil not be so compacted but I know there are differences on them as well...I'm just confused about when a person would need to use one over the other and what each one provides that the other don't? And also, the RGS, what all does it provide? You have a God-given gift to detailing all of this kind of stuff so I was hoping you may have the time to do a comparison video or description video of these 3 products of when, where & how often to use them? Thanks!

let me explain. I moved out of my moms house in 2006. nobody has done anything with the yard other than mow it since I left. now i'm tending it. I have a aerator, dethatcher and lawn sweeper. I started out by testing the soil and liming the crap out of it to get it right. when I lived there I always took care of the yard. I have started with scots early spring fertilizer with weed control. I have the spring fertilizer with weed control ready to go when the time is right. same with the summer and fall. I have aerated it twice so far and dethatched it one time. I have put 200 pounds of Kentucky 31 seed on it so far. is what I am doing going to keep that blue tint to it all summer long? I have had all the neighbors come over and talk to me about what I am doing. they all tell me mom has the best looking yard for miles around. I would love to keep that blue hue all summer. the funny part is I am a locomotive engineer for a railroad. people are asking me to do their yards now!! I make $3500 take home on a bad pay check!!! no thank you, I have enough money. just taking care of my mom is what I want to do.

Need to measure more places. We want to know how much water we are putting down. Measuring where the sprinklers overlap might only be a small hint of information. More measurements need to be made: -Near the sprinkler -Far from sprinkler -In the middle of the throw -Near the edges -Away from edges -In high overlap -In non overlap

@GCITurf

That all depends on how much water supply and pressure you have. You will need to have pro irrigation guy check out your exact situation for that answer

Awesome setup Pete! But I cringed when I saw those wire connections down in that hole, looking mighty susceptible to heavy rains and corrosion. You ought take a look at some weatherproof connection boxes; it may save you a future headache.

Joshua Campbell those are the connectors that that have the goo in them. They are supposed to be waterproof. I’ll check out the boxed you are talking about. Thanks!

What is wrong with walking around and sticking your finger in the ground works wonders and you have it with you twenty four seven. will also let you know if you are developing a bad crust on the surface of the soil.

You don’t want to care about the *volume* of water, just the *depth*! You could have a volume of 1 million gallons spread out so thin it only has a depth of 1”. That’s why it doesn’t matter what the vessel is that’s used, so long as the walls don’t have a taper. A wider vessel like a casserole dish can provide a bigger area and a more reliable average than a thimble.
@GCITurf
@GCITurf 6 лет назад
I do not use a thimble.....I think for the most part you get the general idea friend deep and infrequent watering is best
@Kevlux86
@Kevlux86 6 лет назад
I sure do get the idea and love the video. The only problem is when you're talking about measuring the volume of water, and what kind of vessel to use, which don't apply to measuring precipitation rates. A totally different form of measurement (3D vs 2D) which may confuse others.

You need to do a video for the neighbor of someone that follows The Grass Factor, The Lawn Care Nut, GCITurf academy and lays down 54" stripes like a pro. And explain why you don't dare mow on to his lawn that is a perfect 3.5"...ruin his domination stripe and and create a 2" line like a 6 year old mowed it. 😠

GCI Turf Services nothing really. Just venting because my nextdoor neighbor doesn't quite understand why I am so passionate about having a nice yard and why I don't appreciate them scalping my grass down when it's not on their property.
@full_metal2452

Simply put...they don't respect property lines. Even after explaining nicely why I would prefer they dont mow on my side.

Super wasteful system. Was not properly designed, way to much pressure so lots of misting, wasting lots of water to evaporation. The adjustment screws on the heads are only supposed to be used to reduce the distance about 25% max based off the spray pattern you can totally see they are way more.
