I watered mine only by spraying it two times a day. Just with a fine mist bottle. And it has been doing great for 6 months. I didn’t know it needed this much water. Surprised it’s still doing well!

Hi Danni. I just got another Dendrobium "Frosty Dawn" orchid at a discounted price - it looks very thirsty but has a nice new growth and the beginning of the new growth so hopefully I can bring it back to full health. Thank you for this video, I will make sure it soaks for a while.

I started soaking my dendrobium for around 10 mins a day. I'm in the Caribbean it's extremely hot, beating sun. The orchid loves it all, so I water almost everyday so the canes don't shrivel. However I accidentally left her soaking for almost 2 hours. I am terrified she will die. Absolutely terrified and I am sad she was my most successful one

Great video, all your advice on this type nobile Dendrobium are on spot. I have one and it does wonderful in full bark. It grows taller canes every year, even after geting stressed by a repot. Old canes got all plump again once the new ones finished growing. I feel my Phalaenopsis, Oncidopsis and Miltoniopsis in full bark don't enjoy that medium as much as the Dendrobium does. Especially the Nelly Isler in full small bark, that little thirsty monster sucks the medium dry in one day. Next repot it will try medium bark with New-Zeland sphagnum moss.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
Familha Gaudir yes indeed, anything that has Miltonia or Miltoniopsis in their parentage will be a thirsty beast and does well with a little bit of moss added in there ;) Phals usually do good in bark but again it depends on environment :) you just have to take into account the orchid's specifics ;)

I am new to dendrobium nobile. I’ve had mine for almost 2 years. It was GLORIOUS last year with just tons of gorgeous sunset colored blooms! Now it is February 2nd and the blooms are already forming. Is this normal? I live in Las Vegas and winters here are cold! This year it has been VERY cold for us with weeks of freezing at night. We keep our house on the cooler side (66°) Again my question is, is it normal for my Den. Nobile to be in bloom this early? Thank you for your help. I enjoy your videos so much!

Thank you - that's a timely video! I guess I was torturing my new Dend.nobiles, because I was watering them once a week like the rest of my orchids. They look miserable, all wrinkled with droopy leaves, but I attributed it to the stress of being repotted twice in less than a month during the growth period... (I've no idea why some of the leaves started to turn yellow though, it happened to a couple of Encyclias as well) Now I know that the poor girls were thirsty all the time :( I'm sure they feel quite grateful while enjoying a much-needed soak. It would be great if you can find a moment to make a video on how to mist different orchids. Do I mist both leaves and media, or just the media, how often, and what works better - mornings or evenings? I have a lot of Cattleya seedlings now, they don't seem to be doing well. I was told that I have to keep humidity higher than usual, and try to mist them often. I wasn't told how exactly I'm supposed to mist them though, so I just make sure I get the top of the media and aerial roots if they have any while leaving the rest of an orchid as is. After you told me to avoid getting the new growth wet to prevent rot I'm trying to stay clear of it as well. I mist them and Encyclias, and Bulbofyllum ambrosia (it's in a wanda basket atm) every morning - they seem to try up rather quickly for some reason, even though it's not too hot here yet. I must be doing something wrong...
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
marian e Hi, to be honest I don't usually mist orchids, I might shower them in the hot part of the summer :P with seedlings the best way to increase humidity is to provide a more water retentive media, like sphagnum moss, or a mixture with moss. This will keep the roots hydrated and also provide a halo of humidity to the orchid, though ventilation is still needed. When misting just spray in the direction of the orchid from a distance of about 30 cm, no need to spray undersides. It's not the most efficient thing but I guess it might work. Do this in the morning or noon to let them dryout by night time. All orchids potted in vanda baskets will get almost nothing from misting, best way to deal with things is to soak them, roots absorb and retain more water than you think in the velamen, a mist doesn't give them enough time to absorb water, 10 minute soaks is what you are looking for, again if they are potted in a basket with no media. I might make a video on orchids in baskets soon :)
@mariane-bj7eq
@mariane-bj7eq 9 лет назад
Thank you! I guess it's time to repot the seedlings again... They're potted in bark right now, no moss whatsoever, and I was thinking about giving terrarium a try. I'm not sure if orchids would like that, but it's supposed to help with humidity etc... video on orchids in baskets would be great!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
marian e I think a terrarium would be great but just make sure it is ventilated with a fan, if it's not you'll grow molds instead of orchids :) seedlings usually need more moisture in the media because they don't have those large psb to store moisture, but just remember ventilation is a must!

@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, they can be quite the same, depends how fast the medium dries and how humid the environment is, the slower it dries, the slower they will show signs of dehydration, but if the drying occurs fast and the air is dry it will show signs next day or so :)

Hello Danny. Thank you for this information. A friend of my sister new i love orchids and gave me a slip from her Dendrobium. I wasnt sure what kind it was but from ur previous video i was able to tell that it must be a nobily. I'm trying to understand if they will produce flowers in winter or only spikes for summer? reason I'm asking is because I have slowly started getting mine ready for a winter rest and moved it to a colder position. however since doing that for a month it's it flower bumps/buds forming on each side of the Cane and we in June. should I still keep watering it and while in flower stop for winter rest?

I picked up my first dendrobium nobile yesterday (it's in bloom) and I noticed they used a mossy-dirt like combination as the media. I'm very tempted to re-pot this in regular bark media, but I don't want to destroy the blooms. Any suggestions? Should I be patient and wait for all the blooms to fall before re-potting?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
La Divina well if the canes look ok and overall the orchid looks ok you can wait a bit more, I don;t think the flowers will last a lot, so just keep an eye on the orchid and don;t water until the media is dry.

I just got a Comet King Akatsuki in full bloom. It´s in coconut-fibre media, not to my liking. Thank you for your question, I´ll wait with repotting into bark, as the blooms are just too beautiful and I´m afraid to stop the plant from blooming when I repot at this time. On the other hand I don´t want to be late with repotting, as rootgrowth is taking place now.

Hi Danny thanks for this nice informative video on Dendrobium Nobile!!I just wanted to ask you about some certain things on dendrobiums.I love den orchids and I have few of them in my collection,in my place the temperature,humidity are just perfect for dens,they generally do very well in my place.I got few dens on around October last year...they were blooming,done nicely,but after that I don't see much of the blooms as well,instead they seems busy producing baby plants around them!I was not sure if I was doing ok with them or not...two of them having shrinked canes like you show in this video..three of them are having few black dots on leaves!Please let me know what I should be doing to get them make flowers again...though I don't want to rush them but still who doesn't want to see pretty flowers..lol greedy us!! :) Love you.. Puja

teetir1981 well first of all make sure what type of den you have, nobile or phalaenopsis. Nobile dens will bloom only once a year, after a winter rest and you can check the description to learn about it. The canes that go shrivel no matter how much you water might be cause by a root problem so, check to see if you don;t have some rotting roots. Let me know more once you figure out what type of dens you have.

Hi Danny...yes they are all Phal types like the canes throw out spikes for flowers and flowers looks like Phal.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
teetir1981 well then they don;t need any winter rest, just the same care all year round. Bright light, water when the media is dry and fertilizer is appreciated. The main factor though is light, they do love very bright light. Also these dens are prone to black spots, ventilation will prevent them but they seem to appear every time there is a lack of ventilation or temperatures go too low, they are warm growing orchids, even hot growing orchids.

Hi Danny thanks for the nice reply...I did forget to mention one thing about the potting media,one of the old nice big pink lady Dendrobium I'm having he's residing on coconut husk and coir media as I bought him from the Orchid store and he's having most of those evil black spots all around comparing to other Dens.(He's too big to handle and the pot is also bigger)Do I need to change media for him?As you suggested about sphagnum moss and bark chips I changed the media for other Dendrobiums I'm having and they look happy it seems. With love, Puja

@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
teetir1981 well to be honest I hate coconut husk, but that's just me :P my troubles started with the coconut husk media, I cannot generalize but I am biased :) if your other dens are doing much better in the other media than yes, switch it and see how that goes. It might be the media it might not be, usually those spots appear when the media is infested with some sort of fungus I noticed.

So I do have some questions, my Dendrobium nobile is still growing while at the same time it is forming flower buds. The plant also bloomed (it had a small blooming period back in November,) those buds finished and then 3 new flower buds opened up around Christmas. The blooms from Christmas are much bigger than the earlier blooms. The plant while it is suppose to be dormant has some canes that are just finishing their growth from the spring. The tips still have new leaves coming in. While some older canes are showing signs of buds forming all over them. I’m so confused. Do I limit the watering and let it go dormant? Do I start watering? I usually put this orchid outside during the summer. It has bloomed in the past two years during mid summer for me. (Those times there was a cool spell during the summer where at night the temps dropped to 15 degrees Celsius which is abnormally cold for a Canadian\ Toronto summer night.

Hey Danny! Could a sign of shrivel come from repotting a dendrobium?
@Yermaind
@Yermaind 7 лет назад
Hi Danni, I just got my first nobile, so pretty and fragrant!!!. It's in full bloom and it has a new growth, should I water it only when I see the bulbs shrivelling, if I understood well? Or just let it be with out any water, I'm a little paranoid I don't want the flowers to die fast because of my negligence, I want them to last as long as possible.
@Yermaind
@Yermaind 7 лет назад
Also I forgot to ask when is the best time to repot this orchid in inorganic media? I use a mix of hydroton and grow stone which is kind of similar to seramis, that's the American version.

Hi! Your videos are really informative and easy to understand. I just started caring for orchids as a new hobby. I bought a dendrobium phal ( I think its a dendrobium phal based on the flexing the leaf test you mentioned in another video). Is there any difference in caring for this particular type of dendrobium when compared to the nobile type? Thanks.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, yes there is :) this Dendrobium doesn't need a winter rest, it likes intermediate to warm conditions all year round. It can tolerate lower temperatures as well, but it's not ideal. It light bright light (no direct hot sun) and water when the medium just became dry. Pretty much that's it :)

I have 2 dendrobium. The first one is a Maui Sparkle Valley Isle Giant. The 2nd one Is a Oriental Smile Butterfly. I would like to Know what type of Dendrobium they are if you are familiar with those and if they need the same care of the dendrobium nobile.Thank you

I did some research and I find out the Dendrobium Oriental Smile is a Nobile type and the Maui Sparkle is not a Nobile type ..I think I saw a picture of that one but I still not sure what tho of Dendrobium is.

Danny, Thank you for your video. I have an dentrobium yuridarma nobles. I followed what you told me that left them in low degree (30-45F). Now, I saw two new buds at the nodes, but I am not sure those are buds. So, Danny, I should start water them since they have a buds, but how often should I water them? I stopped water them since Halloween, now I saw the buds. Would you please tell me what I should do and how often to water them to have a bud instead of a keikie, please? Thank you Danny
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
+Thy Do Hi, well my opinion is that they already know if they are buds or keikis so right now you can start to water, but bring up the temperature as well. Water just enough to keep the canes plump, not like summer time. Let the orchid tell you when it needs water and bring the orchid in a warmer place now :)
@JohnJohn-hv4ef
@JohnJohn-hv4ef 9 лет назад
I noticed that the first one you watered the old canes were a little bit wrinkly. Mine are too even though the new growth is growing fast and healthy with lots of new roots and I water abundantly. I gave it a good all-night soak but they didn't plump back. Maybe it's normal for the older canes to get a little bit wrinkly after the blooming is over. Have you noticed that with your dendrobiums?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
John John the first one was recently purchased and repotted and had to cut away most roots, he was worse but is getting better now so I can't ask for much more, the second one is a better example, he is now super plump again ;) some dens are indeed more wrinkly, like the ones with slender canes, think it's a genetic issue, depends on the parentage, but these thick cane dens should be plump all the way.
@JohnJohn-hv4ef
@JohnJohn-hv4ef 9 лет назад
MissOrchidGirl I cut a third of the roots too when I repotted it a couple of months ago. That must be the reason. I think when the new canes mature, the whole orchid will be rehydrated and plump back up once again.

Hi Danny, I live in Florida, how can I winter rest my orchid?
@seanchen7731
@seanchen7731 9 лет назад
What happens if you keep watering it? Will that promote the keiki production or cause root rot? Or something even worse...?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
Sean Chen it might affect the roots yes because winter time might be colder and more humid so water will not evaporate fast, also the orchid will not absorb it that fast thus, like any other orchid, roots will suffer. But it will definitely promote keikis especially if you fertilize during the rest period.

Hi! Danni , I have just bought myself a dendrobium orchid from the nursery, but it's in a coconut chunk media , so I would like to repot it. So I was wondering wether I could put it in a bark ,charcoal, brick and moss .Pls advise . Thanks.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
Deepak Rubdy well the type of media depends on your environment. If it's a very humid environment go for something less water retentive, like bark, charcoal, leca, lava rock. If your environment is pretty dry you can benefit from sphagnum moss or a mixture of bark and moss. Whatever type of media you chose, make sure that it is airy and well draining :)

Today I purchased a dancing lady and two dendrobium , one with a light green bloom the other a dark maroon with light green combination but the petals are twisted , like a curley ribbon , but they were potted in a coconut bark and soaking wet . I had to repot them so I did it in a media you have suggested , hope they survive , but thaks for your advice anyway.

Hi Danni, I bought a D. Nobile two months ago and I could see that it was in growth mode. But its roots were cut (as almost every orchid I get...) and maybe the change in environment caused that some of the canes went dormant (lost their leaves, developed that dry white cover and so on). I didn't want it to 'go to sleep' because I want it to grow roots, so I placed it where it could receive full sun, poured water on it all the time and sprayed foliar fertilizer on it every week, and I think that it already got the message and stopped shedding leaves. The canes that went "dormant" now have some bumps although I still don't know what they are (I hope that they're keikis, I need roots!). My questions are: is it possible that Dens that are going through some stress become dormant? and, do you have any advice to encourage root growth on D. Nobile orchids? Thank youuuuu!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
Antonia Orchids Hi Antonia, leaves falling from Den Nobiles are very common, it's pretty normal because somewhere in their parentage they have some deciduous den species traits ;) doesn't mean they are going dormant. New growth is indication they are not dormant. So now you can resume the summer care and watering just like in this video. Careful with fertilizer, too much and keikis will appear, and not the ones you want that appear at the base, but the ones on the cane that can deplete the orchid. Just water it when media is almost dry and fertilize normally, with the new roots that come from the new growth the old canes will plump back up.

Hello Dani, I live in Florida where the weather is tropical. Does my dendrobium noble need to rest during the winter.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, normally this type of orchid receives a difference between summer and winter, for this reason we are trying to imitate a cooler and drier winter and we try to replicate what it will experience in its own habitat. I think in winter time, or when the new growths have reached maturity, it is a good idea to stop fertilizing and let the orchid tell you if it needs water or not, by observing the canes. If they shrivel visibly, then it needs some water. If not, they can be left dry a bit more. Lower temperatures are supposed to help with flower production. so if you could provide a cooler environment when the new growths reached maturity, I think it will help with flowering. Just observe how the orchid will perform in your environment and see if you can make a sort of difference between summer and winter. Hope ti will bloom for you :)

Hello! I have been watching your channel for a while now. Your orchids are beautiful. I also have nobiles in my collection, still learning how to properly grow them. Mine though, their new young leaves are drying just as soon as they emerge. This happens with my Oncidiums as well. What is causing this?

Hi Danny! I stopped watering my Dendobrium nobile on Halloween, like I usually do, but the new canes have small buds already! =S Should I start watering again? I usually only start watering around Valentines Day because that it usually the time the buds appear. Thank you! Love your videos!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
+Ana Rosa hello Ana, well let the orchid tell you :) maybe due to some weather changes this year your nobiles actually will bloom sooner, as the buds will grow you will see the canes shrivel more and more. Water when the canes will start to visibly shrivel. This can be an indicator on how often they need water as well. But right now you can increase temperatures as well, don't keep them in the cold. If you are sure those are buds you are seeing, then your nobile is pretty done with his rest ;)

JR Photon Hi, yes it is good and quite advisable, if he is very tiny use a dilute amount, maybe 50% than the recommended dosage just to be sure the roots won't get burned.

Great video, Danny!! I think I quit on nobile type dendrobiums, for me they are too big and not attractive when out of bloom. haha! But this is great information nonetheless and it's making me think about the growth of my other orchids and that I should pick up my fertilizing! One side question- what video editing software do you use? I am trying to find a decent one at the moment.

***** lol actually my vids could be a heck of a lot better and better edited and so on.. but if I do that I would post rarely, take up a lot time to edit and right now it's not worth it and also it would take away from the friendly attitude so, I guess in this hobby it's better to keep it simple. I cannot compare to how much other youtubers spend on editing and all but I don't think it's that necessary either.. maybe in the future I'll make some more artistic stuff, it just has to worth the time and money lol

***** yes indeed haha we all want to make documentary quality videos :))) PS: a tip for when you will want to purchase a new camera, look at reviews and try to pick a camera with a very good focus, the only reason I chose my camera, apart from being super easy to use and quite small, is that it had tons of good reviews about focusing, focuses very intuitively, fast, doesn't defocus, does macro to the extreme and that's what you need with orchids really to get that crisp image without too much messing with the settings.. however mine is crap at night hahaha :P
