thank you for clarifying the difference between a button front/up shirt and a button down shirt. I hear others calling a button front a button down all the time when the shirt they are showing is not a button down at all. Love your channel and all the great fashion tips and ideas.
I feel like everything old is new again. This is how I dressed in the late 80's and early 90's. I should have kept my clothes! I still like the look. Thank you the video-- nice style for the warmer weather.
Same here! but I started wearing them in the mid 70s as a teen, short-sleeved or long-sleeved were so popular already. One of my favourite was actually oversized, crispy white, it belonged to my big brother :)
Even just “shirt” is what people used to call it, the button-up part was only added in the last generation or two. Somehow, the button-down for the collar part got last, but I always knew the difference, it’s only the collar (in college I worked styling in the men’s department at Macy’s). I love them, they look so crisp and polish, but prefer knit tops for comfort if I’m going to be just at home. I love the classics like the shirt.
You can get no-iron shirts that don’t have polyester, both in cotton and linen, these have a surface-treatment instead to prevent wrinkling (I think it’s a type of resin). That way, most of the comfort and breathability of the natural fiber is maintained, unlike those with poly in them, which get hot and sweaty.
Good morning Kay. My full-size figure will not allow me to wear jeans comfortably. I wear these classic shirts over a sleeveless straight dress. I find it more complimentary for my figure. It looks very smart and put together. Thank you for your wonderful videos. Melissa
Such a wonderful video! I love the way you describe your thinking process and also seeing you wear the outfits. Your video format is very helpful. Thank you!
I’ve always been a fan of the button down shirt. My neck is long so just feels more flattering on me. I just purchased a Uber long white poplin button down for use over leggings. This way I can be modest and classy, all at the same time! Thanks for the channel
I bought my twin daughters each their first white button up shirt for Christmas. They both have a lot of zoom calls with professors right now. Never to soon to start a classic wardrobe!
Love the white shirt but hard pass on the 2021 "Mom" jeans! 🙂 I'd bet in the near future, these jeans will be cited as what not to wear if you want to look youthful.
Thank you! I put a shirt on and I have felt overwhelmed/frumpy. Your breakthrough idea for me was to concentrate on the SHOE....and let it set a tone or be a focal point. Great idea! Plus, your visuals of the tucked vs. untucked really show how you can look overwhelmed, versus trimmer.
Love all these looks, love how the “shirt” looks with each outfit. Thanks for showing and explaining each outfit. Enjoy seeing the different shoes with each look too. The white tennis shoes are a must, I think!
I wore a classic button up today in a nice soft pink with dark wash straight jeans and snake print sneakers. I felt comfortable and trending plus the shows brought some Joy to me!!!
Such great ideas, Kay! I was glad to know that I "needed" a silky scarf for spring, and wore the teal one with butterflies that I have just purchased from Dollar Tree today! It's still cool enough in the morning, and sometimes mid-morning that the breezes need to be kept out! Thanks for all you bring to us here! Hugs!
Great Channel for me..I'm 62 but look and represent 40! I dress Classic/elegant neutrals only and pastels. I don't wear Reds or any other bright colors, even? Except for in my scarves..Thank you for your Channel👍
Another great video with lots of styling choice. I too, am not a fan of the short, looser fitting "mom' jeans but prefer that look in a cotton, coloured capri. I absolutely love the look of a crisp white blouse/shirt and just as much, hate the feel of crisp cotton; unfortunately a knitted top does not give the same look so I will compromise and put a cotton shirt over a knit tank or short sleeved top. Thanks again Kay :)
🙌🏻 Thank you. I think we have to be willing to let our eyes to adjust to new things and mine are definitely starting to adjust. Now I’m really enjoying the fuller leg jeans. Thanks for sharing Carol. 🥰
Well, I recently donated my over-sized white button up shirt, right before it started to trend! I do have the Talbots no iron shirts, both white, in long sleeved and sleeveless. Talbots also has a no-iron tunic style that's a little looser, so that might be something I pick up to participate in this trend. I enjoyed all of your style options. You are always a wealth of ideas!!
I really like the looser pant. I have shirts exactly like these in my closet. I’ve usually tied them or wear them loose. I never thought of adding a scarf but it completes the outfit. This is usually a spring look for me with sandals. I like my red plaid with white jeans too.
With a large bust but narrow to normal shoulders, it’s hard to find a good fit, but ones with bust darts are out there. I found a great no-iron linen one last year.
All of the outfits look wonderful, and I plan on copying several of them. I wonder if tying the scarf higher in the oversized blue/white striped-shirt-and-skinny-jean outfit--so the bottom falls mid-chest--would draw the eyes away from the hip area? Thank you for the video!
Love your videos, Kay! What do you wear inside your loafers? Footies? Nothing? I usually go with baby powder because footies seem so bulky in summer. Thanks!
@@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms Thank you but I. Not sure what a couch of years is?🤔I meant a couple. I love the ‘40’s throw back of the fuller jeans. It reminds me of a movie we watched called “The Dig”
Love these looks! I have a pink stripe and blue stripe from the Polo outlet store. I had them shortened since they were super long. Your styles are motivating!
Another helpful video from you, Kay. I, like some of the others who have posted here, stay away from the oversized shirts because I'm top heavy and those styles emphasize this--so I do prefer the tuck in look. For the oversized ones I do have, I add a scarf ring to the bottom of the shirt to cinch it in. What do you think of those?
I loved the skinny jeans with the blousy button up shirts either loose with a scarf of tucked in. So classy. Not so much with the baggy or balloon style jeans. I have skinny legs and they would make me look like I was wearing my dad's jeans. Not very flattering to me. I don't think this trend will be around long. Too sloppy. Sorry, just my opinion, but thanks for all the ideas you give us. I know you go to a lot of work to do your blog.
I had a button-up back in 2003 & wore it to death. It was oversized & thin stripes. Hoping to find a replacement. Today, I'd wear a cami beneath. Living in FL just screams wearing lite layers (to me).
What size do you wear in the Talbots shirt and the Chicos shirt Kay? You are 5’8” and I am 5’9” and i would like to know which one has the longest sleeves also? Thank you!
Thanks. There are links to everything I’m wearing in the description box below the video. Just click on the little down arrow and it opens up. I shop a lot at Everlane and Talbots.
I'm a new subscriber and am enjoying your content! Great ideas that will help me "spruce up" my outfits while being comfortable going back into the classroom. Take care!
Hi Kay, I’m not being critical but on the very first outfit with the chinos...they seem very short to me. Is that the way they are worn? I guess I just like my pants a bit longer but maybe I’m out of touch. Wouldn’t be the first time 😊
Hi Donna. Yes, they are cropped chinos. That is how they are meant to be worn. In fact most of the jeans I shared in this video are cropped too. The shorter lengths are definitely in but you can certainly stick with full lengths if you’d prefer. 🥰
Thank a lot your ideas is great!! I'm d kind of person who always wear sporty clothes and I don't know what to do if I go out semi formal place!! So thank u very much
I love a pair of straight leg or skinny jeans with a white button up shirt. So classic. You did some nice styling in this video. I'm just not a fan of the loose jeans.
Help! I can’t wear tops tucked in as I have that horrible tummy from C sections! I’m losing weight but I’ve always tried to hide my tummy What do you suggest when everyone is tucking that front into cool belts?
Kay, I just subscribed. I would love to hear your thoughts about jean length. You seem to show ankle when you wear jeans. Is that the trend now? I'm a taller lady and have always had trouble finding the right length.
Hi Lisa. Thanks so much for subscribing. Yes, it actually is the trend to wear ankle or cropped jeans. You can still find them in full lengths, but showing some ankle is very flattering. I’m 5’8” and I’m so glad we no longer have to worry about having the perfect full length pant. So many lengths to choose from now.
I've always heard these called shirts in UK, because it's what they are, shirts :) In France we call them chemises (for men) and chemisiers (for women) which are the translation of shirt. I hear Americans use "shirt" for simple T-shirts or blouse,s and button down or up shirts for shirts.. So confusing, to :) I've always loved and worn shirts for as long as I can remember (decades). So chic, effortless, comfortable and flattering!
I’m sorry Carol. I just don’t have time right now to create pins too. But each look is shoppable and you could potentially download or screenshot those images from there.
Yes thank you for this video love a white shirt still love my high waist skinny jeans and a straight jean not liking the full leg one ☝🏽 because they do not like me.😂
@@ChrystiLove Those are two of my favorite brands too. Rarely have to return anything if I order those from JCP online. ANA jeans are comfy & they often come in petite lengths. Yay! -A
Kay, would you do a video or series on different body types and dressing with the wonderful classics you espouse? I am 5’2” and weight 208lbs and my weight is all over (especially my arms) and thick ankles. I have a friend who is 5’10” and is 130lbs with large breasts and very subtle curves otherwise and another friend is 5’5” with a short waist but hour glass shaped. We all love your style but have difficulty figuring out how to translate the style to our body shapes.
I am concerned that a horizontal belt widens the appearance of my short frame. I am thinking about belting my pants with a color match. If I wear blue jeans, blue belt: what if I wear white or tan or black loafers? I might want to add a scarf or long necklace to match my shoes? Hmmmm? What do you think? ~ L
I am not a fan of tucking it in the front only on any shirt. I’ll either tuck it in or not at all (any shirt). Just my personal preference. But, yes, I have always loved the look of the classic white button up shirt. It seems like the button down shirt used to be called something else but I cannot remember. Help me out ladies. Is my memory playing tricks on me or did it go by a different name back in the day. The button up used to just be called a shirt. 🙂
I am so happy skinny jeans are heading out. I will never buy another pair. I have a closet full that will be donated. Straight legs or boot cut from now on 😊
