Timothee Chalamet has great instincts about clothing colour and style. Today, he's our example for our natural colours being our best choices in apparel, and for how to combine them using colour analysis ideas for Winter colouring.

Timothee has exceptional instincts for the colours he wears best and he takes interesting risks that are great. I'd love to hear the associations that came up for you with the print in Look #1. Up close, I saw the spikes. From a distance, it's like a ceremonial sash of some sort, still not entirely friendly. I liked that it created distance by the print as well as the nature of black and white. I hope you enjoy watching and share your insights into dressing like a Winter.

How we're wired is so interesting, and how so many of our beliefs about how we process the world are being revisited. I've read about depression and had a conversation with a neuroscientist recently about how virtual reality is helping understand the brain by placing us in more realistic situations.The more I learn about Nature, the more respect I have for it :)

Without taking a look at his best shades and colors, I would have assumed he was a spring of some sort. Once you see so many different outfits on him, he gives life to those winter colors so much more and the warm colors take away from him. It becomes so obvious. He is indeed “like a poem that comes to life.”
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman 2 года назад
Yes, his warmth tolerance appears to be fairly narrow. I could easily see some Spring, and it's interesting to see him express the sweetness while remaining primarily true to the Winter he probably is. I did a blog post awhile back on how to be Bright Winter, not True Winter, which had a lot to do with imagery. He's a shining example of many of those ideas.

I have felt that relief after discovering I’m a winter in a family of autumn. I assumed I was too, but I’m a deep winter. I feel opened up, looking younger, even going back to my natural hair color for the first time since being a teen and loving makeup again. (The current highlight and contour and “natural lipstick” trends didn’t suit me, so I lost my luster for awhile.)
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman 2 года назад
So glad you enjoyed it. The visceral is my favourite thing about colour. It answers the question, "Yes, it is beautiful, what can it do? Great lipstick is a lot, and is there anything deeper that all humans sense and connect with?" Turns out there is. I have been so happy to see that as I share how I experience the world, so many voices have chimed in and seen and felt the same way. Thank you for joining in :)

Do you mean the galaxy sweatshirt with the matte black pants? I loved that one! He and the print are beautiful together, although the other look next to it, with the sparkly velvet (hard to see the delicate sparkle) and white collar and cuffs was good too, soft velvet and the crisp accents, which he kind of is. This is the best part of colour for me, letting the colours and the shapes tell their story. There's one in every face and person and with Timothee, you can sense it, the quiet exterior and the interior force. Why he embodied Winter so well. And how he embodies the interior charge that transforms Paul Atreides when his inner world is waking up. It was amazing. I've seen the movie twice and will see it again.

@@ChristineScaman Christine, you mentioned seeing Dune twice. I loved the movie too! Have you read the book? If you haven’t, it’s a must read. I’m not into SciFi but it’s one of my favorite all time books and I read a ton. The only thing I would say is not to pay attention to the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. They’re confusing and it’s better to skip them the first time you read the book. Another book that I’m curious if you’ve read is the Time Traveler’s Wife. Highly, highly recommended.
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman 2 года назад
@@BbGun-lw5vi I have read the Dune books, many years ago. I'm not generally a SciFi person either, although I wish I were for the feats of imagination, but I loved the philosophies of Dune and admired the imagination of a complete world, like Hogwart's. Yes also to the Time Traveller's Wife, another remarkable achievement, for a writer to just keep track of a linear story is hard enough! I'm presently reading Jane Harper, who does a brilliant job of describing Australian landscapes and creating stories within them. I read The Dry a few years ago and just finished The Survivors, set in Tasmania. The mystery is complex too, very hard to guess where the guilt lies. Like you, I read a lot and I watch a lot of movies. Story construction, symbolism, cycle, and meaning are completely fascinating to me (do you know The Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler?) I expect we could talk books for hours :)

I loved the white suit at the end. I also loved the fuchsia suit, but in that case, I think that a shirt of a different colour would have been better. I appreciate the fact that he is a risk taker. His choices are very entertaining and eye catching, which I suspect is the goal. :)

Agreed! The variety makes him more interesting and he's a great model for staying in his colour territory and having lots of variety. Men's clothing can be powerful since it's just the man and his apparel, no hair colour or makeup to distract, but they can also get into clothing ruts or repeat a standard look so much that you barely register the clothing any more. He seems to enjoy colour variety and hopefully will as he gets older. The white suit was so interesting, I thought so too, the purity and innocence were singing, partly from his colours, which won't change over time, and also from his youth. Maybe over the years, black pants might better, but for now, he just looked angelic.

How colourful can be an outfit for Bright Winter? Because it is still a Winter, but with added Spring lightness and energy. In other words, Bright Winter is more energetic than Dark Winter and True Winter, less calm, less static. Dark Winter is like Christmas evening, winter night, True Winter is like an arctic landscape, a classic winter one. Bright Winter is like aurora, or galaxy or carnival. In some ways it feels different from DW and TW.
@marah3298
@marah3298 2 года назад
I agree. Bright Winter can borrow some essence and colors from a True Spring (I’m not an expert.) a very different feeling than the other winters. If you’re asking about yourself, take a look at your contrast levels and consider your accent colors. As a deep winter, I can’t wear all yellow or partake in monochrome for example. But a canary yellow might look really amazing on a bright winter. 🤔 I’m not so sure, hopefully she answers you 🙏
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman 2 года назад
It probably holds for any Season that once you know those are your colours, the guidelines becomes more fluid and depend on the person being dressed. I aim for a medium to medium-dark overall effect, but there's so much diversity. Say, a person who has black-brown eyes and hair and medium dark skin tones, I'm thinking maybe they live in an Arabic country, not that it matters. What places them in Bright Winter is the very high saturation and during the analysis, we see that their colouring doesn't negotiate on that requirement in clothing, while on the surface, we see a person whose colours look darker than they actually are. They might wear a darker overall effect than a Bright Winter with naturally light eyes...but I resist getting caught around 'rules', the BW with light eyes may have the blackest eyelashes you've ever seen, and away we go, overthinking the details. Knowing your Season is the name of the game and the analysis process is specific, structured, and precise. After that, I move away from rules and even patterns, I find they limit our creativity. The real-life answer to 'how colourful is BW' is to vary the outfits and combinations, from zero to 3 colours is about right, or 4-5 for a person with a lot of animation or quick movements, or if the outfit includes a print. I wish I could offer specific 'rules' but it may not be in my skill set, being more of a rule questioner than rule follower, a blessing and a curse :)

This video is amazing. I've just realized I'm winter. My favorite colors are violet, emerald green, royal blue, true red, pale blue and black and I have a few pieces in each of this colors (I couldn't understant why, even though I love mainly bold saturated jewel colors, I also like pale blue. Now it makes sense). I'm not a fan of pink, but I have 2 dresses in pink - in the exact shades of pink shown in the winter palette! The only color from the winter palette I have never worn is yellow, but I might try it now. Now I understand why I hardly ever gravitate towards my burgundy/ petrol blue/ army green pieces during winter. I bought 3 identical knit dresses this winter (they were 100% cotton and on sale...): one is dark navy, one is petrol blue and one is charcoal. I was sure I would wear the blue ones a lot as I love the color blue, but to my surprise, I haven't worn them at all. I've worn the charcoal one several times. Now everything makes sense, thanks to you. I do like wearing tomato red though (all bright reds make me happy), but I know I look a bit yellowish when wearing a tomato red item (I would have bought them in true red had this shade been available).

Christine, you read my mind!! I was re-watching Dune last night, I cannot get over how well cast Timothee is for Paul. And as I was watching I was thinking I would love to see your take on him ... wish granted! Thank you! This was very very helpful. Between this and your analysis of Chris Pine I feel like I can really step into my colors better, which feels life changing. I seem to learn more when you present a man for analysis, perhaps because there's no distraction or confusion from colored hair (usually) or cosmetics. This has been wonderful inspiration for incorporating an ethereal vibe without making it wishy-washy - infinity, space, starry nights, frozen water and the deepest depths of the ocean. So much gratitude for your eye and your willingness to share 🙏

So many thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Much as I love the colours, the magic is in the pictures they paint, which is where colour evokes emotion, in painting, landscapes, or outfits. Thank you also for mentioning that you enjoy videos about men. In the Lupita video, a viewer mentioned that they'd love to see Adele discussed and in my reply, I said that as I find my voice with this format, I'm learning things. One is that giving negative reviews is almost exhausting, so I'm looking now for what's good and great. It surprised me how many celebs (no names, but all women) that took off the table, I couldn't find any images where they looked beautiful (they're all beautiful, so say, more beautiful in what they were wearing, or they had one beautiful thing and the rest was off.) Second, and Adele is a good example, the whole look is manufactured, hair, makeup, clothes, and we're only ever reviewing the performer, the brand, never the real person, meaning there's little that we can apply to ourselves. In the early days, before the megastar, Adele was hard to see for the black eyeliner. Once the dye came on board, and this is true of a lot of dye colours, everything about the appearance is seen relative to the dye, which may be opposite to the person but how would we ever know? Long way of saying that men tend to stay nearer their true selves. And the viewer suggested Brad Pitt and I thought, 'brilliant, I've been looking for a Summer or Spring".
@Nerdy-By-Nature
@Nerdy-By-Nature 2 года назад
@@ChristineScaman I agree, when you see the picture painted - the outfit put together, you get to feel the magic! It's also so very helpful practically when we get to see the palette in action. Timothee's white vs white, wow! In regards to Adelle and other celebrities I can see how it would get quite exhausting doing negative reviews of outfits. It seems especially frustrating when you *are* looking at beautiful celebrities and their potential is so high, so are their budgets. And I think it becomes disheartening when you see so many cosmetic procedures (lips for example) done on women who are already above-average in the looks department but they still somehow don't feel enough as they are. The logical thought is "well what does that say about me?" You can't help being left feeling less-than. The same could be applied to hair color, which makes me sad. I remember feeling that pressure in my early 20's, that my hair color would never measure up to the shine and pigment of the artificial heads surrounding me. I'm glad I only gave in once, and it has long grown out, because I truly love my natural hair color when I'm wearing my best colors! It would be lovely if women could start just "showing up" (as men seem to do) feeling attractive, more importantly feeling enough. A lot of people seem to misunderstand color analysis but I feel like it is so empowering in that way - we get to step into our true potential, true power even, and then we finally just show up. Not saying it's the only step but it's certainly a big one! Also, I have to thank you for saying "these people are out there" in your navy video, in regards to Bright Winters with a lot of yellow in their hair and eyes. Outloud in the middle of my kitchen I said "THANK YOU!!" Although my eyes are mostly cool, my hair reads pretty warm, and as a result I have felt very gaslit by much of the color analysis online community. I've been told I don't exist over and over, and people continually try to push me into Spring even though those colors yellow me and make me look exhausted, or even Summer and Autumn (my most painful worst). Anywhere but my true home. I've been professionally mistyped a few times too, by those who analyze according to hair color and eye color. So that one sentence in your video was incredibly validating! I know who I am, it's just a relief to hear a color educated person with a platform publicly say it. I'm certain I'm not the only one who feels that way.
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman 2 года назад
I so agree with the points you bring up. Women are taught, expected even, to look party-ready, dolled up and decorated. Men are taught to look competent and leadership-worthy. For sure, there are appearance double-standards, but I think we'd be treated more as we are if we presented ourselves as we are, and this goes for men as well. Being told you don't exist would be funny if it weren't true, like my recent experience at the hardware store, staff person says, "this shouldn't be happening". Yes, well whether it should or shouldn't, it is happening so let's work with the world that is. Let's try to understand that world, which presents us with surprises daily to help us understand Nature better. Rules have a place but once they get rigid, they apply to a much narrower bell curve of people than actually exist.

I suspect I may be a Winter, even though one wouldn't think it just by looking at my colouring, and this explains so well why I can't do too much colour at the same time, and often just wear black (which my mother used to deride)...
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman 2 года назад
It's certainly possible. Although every Season has more variation in how people look than one might expect, the diversity is highest among Winters, and of those, perhaps highest in True and Bright Winter. Just an impression though, I've never recorded any data, and many people may wear black for a variety of reasons when they're not sure of better options. Looking to understand our own colouring as you are doing may be the biggest step forward of all.

I'm so glad to know this, thank you. Winter has big scale with colour, in lightness, darkness, and saturation, and it may be providing the balance that feels so satisfying to look at. Wow, he's impressively self aware and adventurous. He's smart and precise. Studious and critical in his gaze which I suspect gets applied to everything. Often you wonder if these people know when they aren't looking their best but with him I think he's perfectly aware. Seems to even have a "uniform" in the tailoring of his suits. Experimenting with color after settling on a shape that works. I think the white suit washed him out, made him look washed out and unhealthy to my eyes. If I could've put a black V neck shirt under that fuchsia suit that might've been my favorite. Barring that the black with zippers looked divine!

He's so interesting, isn't he? I look through many images to illustrate the ideas I'm presenting and to show the person respectfully and find the good. The looks in this video are curated to have some great aspects, but overall, I agree that he is surprisingly self-aware and confident in his choices. The white suit at the end, I'm not sure if the issue was the white or just too much white. I felt the same about the black zipper sleeves suit, that there was a lot of matte black. A black T under the fuchsia suit would be so good!

@@ChristineScaman Oh I'm certain it was just too much white. The color itself didn't seem too separate, likely a very similar color to the pattern on the black jacket in the first image that was so perfect for him. @ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman 2 года назад
I see the same, the white was maybe a little cool but the amount of it was the thing. It still looked like a suit, not a uniform, just that it could have been more interesting with some value or colour contrast. He was so well cast as Paul Atreides that the black suit spoke well for both of them, maybe a little tough for both of them, which is interesting too how it just exceeded the voice of the person/role. Of all the suits he could have worn, there was so much story in the clothing alone, I love that. You're especially good at seeing the story. He's young (25?) and seems very slender, and he's good at dressing that person. I also find the straight, slim cut of the pants with just enough space is great for a straight, slim body.

Yes! I was just commenting to my stepson who has a similar body type how well those cuts work. There's a crispness and angularity in his features that matches well with the straight slim cuts he chooses. There's also an e-book on my website for each Season, if you live in North America (or I can mail a hard copy, email me and we can figure it out), that goes into detail about colours and prints. I feel like there isn't much info on bright springs on youtube or anywhere on the internet, and have both experienced and heard others being mistyped as another season, and I'm wondering why this seems to be so common with bright spring. Maybe you could do a video on how to dress for bright spring without wearing head to toe neon colors, like realistic outfit/color ideas?

Hi Christine! I just found your channel and have been loving your videos! They are so helpful. I have had such a challenging time trying to figure out my colour season: I am very fair, with blonde hair and blue eyes but I have olive undertones (I get fairness from my mom and olive from my dad) which explains why my mom and I do not look good in the same clothing even though we look so similar! Many of the tests I have taken classify me as a summer but I do not look good in summer colours, muted or pastels. I feel very at home in deep, saturated cool colours and black and white, especially black. I think I am a winter but I am still trying to figure out which one - would love any tips you can give for figuring this out - I feel like a unicorn, I don't fit anywhere!
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman Год назад
Welcome to the channel, so glad you're here and enjoying the videos :) You're definitely not a unicorn, everyone fits into a Season, they just need the in-person process to sort out which one. Sometimes people can narrow it down to 2 or 3 and I'm always a little surprised when their actual Season is among them. It takes some training and calibrated drape colours to identify Season for certain. In the meantime, you may find ideas in some of the more theoretical videos on the channel, Nextdoor Season Colours as an example.

Just learned I am a winter and its so not my style. I've never liked cool colors. I like to feel natural and soft, I garden, I make herbal medicine, I live in the country. These colors are stark, high fashion and such contrast to my garden greens. How can I make my winter palette look softer and fit my lifestyle. I can't find anything that makes me feel good in this palette outside of the emerald greens and even that feels too fancy for a homeschooling vegatable farmer lol 😆 help.
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman Год назад
Many folks who've grown into their Season have been in your shoes, that middle ground between who we think we are and who the world made or wants us to be :) The job seems daunting but you take it in small steps. It would help to know which type of Winter you are, since some are softer than others. Timothee, featured in this video, may be a True or Bright Winter. I'm a Dark Winter and many of the clothes shown here could be too bright. Only True Winter is cool, the other Winter types have some warmth in their colours. So, there are degrees of everything. If narrowing down the type of Winter isn't possible, I'd get a sense of what all the Winters have in common, from reading, videos, or Pinterest. Colour may be brighter than you're used to but it's neither neon nor frozen. "Stark high-fashion' presentations are for magazines and runways. Those of us getting along in the regular world might choose casual styling or more gradual contrasts, within our Winter palette. I hope this gives you a place to begin. Please ask if I can offer more help :)

His skin overtone seems to be more in the ivory or alabaster range. When I have seen olive skin, even the lightest has a deeper overtone, like a very light cool tan colour, along with eyes that may be in the medium darkness range, brown or blue. Diversity among people is so big that no doubt, there are many variations.

You can definitely see Summers and Winters with dark hair and light skin tones. Maybe contrast level is more useful in how you combine colours after you know the Season using the drapes? Like how hair colour is misleading for identifying Season, but once you know your Season using the drapes, you can apply it to finding gorgeous colours for hair and everything else you wear.

@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman Год назад
You're not missing anything, I was exactly the same. How colours look in charts and maps can be very different from how they appear in the many people within any Season. Autumns and Winters both have a type of olive in their colours or skin tones, but they don't react to colour the same way. It may be that an in-person colour analysis will give you the answer, as it does for most people.

@@ChristineScamanI came here to talk about this and happened to find this comment. I think I’m in the same boat at this point. I self-draped and came to the conclusion I was likely a soft autumn. I know self draping isn’t ideal but it has definitely helped me rule out a few things at the very least…. but after you’d mentioned to me that yellow skin was typically a winter thing I started to wonder. Have you seen non-winters with obvious yellow in their skin? I know you said autumns tend to have more copper. I’ve met a few draped soft summers who have strong yellow tones to their skin but I don’t know the system they were draped in.

Does anybody else struggle with wearing those clear, bright winter colours? I get more compliments when I so, but gosh are those colours overwhelming! It's like the colours are overstimulating. Anybody else in a similar predicament? Obviously, I'm referring to people who like myself would be typed as winters or even bright winters. Honestly, I'm at a loss...
@ChristineScaman
@ChristineScaman 5 месяцев назад
Many people express the same concerns. The first person to speak with is your colour analyst, if you're uncertain about the Season. Compliments are good as long as they're about you more than the colour you're wearing. "You look great in purple!" is good. "Gorgeous purple jacket!!" would leave me a little uncertain that the colour, textile, area, or style might be stepping in front of me. If you feel that BW is your Season, keep in mind that you might only wear one of those colours at a time, in as large or small an area as you prefer. That's a fantastic look for Winters. Alongside a person with BW colouring, the colours are not extreme, they're just normal. Blue is just blue, not remotely neon. Matte fabrics help 'normalize' the effect even more. Extreme looks with clothing or cosmetics that you may see online are one aspect of BW, but so is a turquoise blue T-shirt, blue jeans with lots of blue, and a winter white fleece.

Yes, the gray and black surprised me for looking peaceful and strong, which his face is as well. The suit fits beautifully, though I found the overall effect of colour and style a bit 'university professor', maybe because he's young. He has an interior intelligence that came through so well, no static on the lines at all, but I kept seeing an almost...intricate?... beauty that shows up better in some of the other looks. Incredibly interesting face and colours.

No way is this guy a summer imo, look at the outfit on the left at 13:09 no Summer could wear that, and he looks really suited to it, I think he's a Bright Winter even though he has olive skin, he doesn't have the subtle softness of a deep winter, and black and white outfits look a bit empty on him to be a true winter I think, a bit like Cortney Cox as a female equivalent

@@ultron374 yeah but there are two, three even four other winters to choose from depending on your system, his lines/features even before you get into his colours, are so much more dramatic and sharp than you'd find in a summer, there is a bit of romance from the wavy hair, but again it's a dramatic, theatrical feel, not the soft romantic summer feel. Even with the examples here, of metals and the leather that so clearly suit him are from that winter world. To say the eyes can't be Winter because they're muddy suggests to me that out of the winter palettes he has an Autumn influence taking him into a Dark Winter, like many olive skinned can be, there's too much warmth in his eyes to be true summer, or true winter IMO

I think his choice of clothes are feminine through and through. If you like his overall common features, if you look closely, he needs some masculine style. The narrator, I guess, Christine, really has an attraction for this, obviously, feminine guy. A lot of people liked Bowie, in the same way. Bowie usually dressed well and knew the contrasts well. I did not like any of the outfits that this guy chose in this video. It did not do his common features justice. And, he is no ‘Bowie’.

You seem much better versed in style style than I am. In these videos, I try to keep my commentary to colour since style is a separate conversation. There is overlap between colour and style, which is why I include a variety of styles and let viewers decide those preferences for themselves. For any topic, I also try to keep the commentary generally positive, which may limit the variety of colours and styles shown and doesn't represent the person as fully as their wardrobe might. It's interesting that ten people might create ten very different videos about the same person.
