I'm a spring and even in the winter I can't bear to wear the dark colors most people gravitate to. My winter coats are yellow, orange, olive and brown. In a sea of black coats I think it brightens people's day to see color

Hi Sarah, I am a "winter". I live in Brisbane Australia, where we have very warm/humid summers, cool but not very cold winters, and pleasant, almost non existent spring and autumn. So how I wear my wardrobe is to pay attention to the fabrics and value of colours. So usually cottons, linens and lighter greys, whites, pinks and blues in the warmer seasons and the more intense of the same, plus black and dark greens in the cooler seasons. Of course, jumpers and scarves in light or dark colours are appropriate for our winters here. I like whites and greys too, but in thicker/warmer fabrics. In between, in Spring and Autumn, cotton and linen jackets help layer the cotton and linen clothes.

I'm a summer from Germany. In the cold and rainy seasons it's difficult to find jackets and shoes in other colours than black. We have a lot of black in the shops in winter. Lighter shoes get muddy and dirty quickly then; black tolerates and hides the dirt best 🙄 But starting this year I'm trying to strictly stay away from buying more black items. For a plus size person it's even more difficult because the selection and variety is a lot smaller.
@sarahryanthestylecoach
@sarahryanthestylecoach Месяц назад
I’m also trying to buy less black… with the exception of shoes perhaps for a similar rainy winter in Ireland! 💕☺️

Same here, I'm a plus size soft summer (I think) and the winters in Belgium are grey and rainy! I've found coats in darker muted blues and greens, also in a muted oyster which was pretty neutral and looked good. But essentially, scarves are my saviour when it comes to coats and blazers! Having my best colours around the face, whether that's in a silk/polyester or a wool/acrylic knitted scarf, can make a black coat work. For garments I try to play with my dark or light neutrals as background of a print, or if plain I'll use a neck scarf to inject more of my best colours. Textures are also super important; you can get away with almost any of your colours if the fabric weight and texture is appropriate for the time of year.

Probably my biggest adjustment for spring and summer is to wear my lighter neutrals on the bottom and prints with my lighter neutrals in the background on top. And getting some contrast is essential for me to look my best all year round. Either wearing a light with a bright in spring and summer or a dark with a light or bright in fall and winter seem to work for me. For example, sand beige linen trousers with a bright aqua tank top and sun shirt in spring and summer.

I'm a Winter (fair skin, dark hair) and I have struggled with summer. On paper I seem to have a lot of options, but it's only this year that I figured out why I have such a hard time making it actually work. There are three main problems I have to overcome: 1) I live in Texas and it's hot. This means I'm not going to wear a layering piece. I've started to realize just how much I rely on a cardigan to make a lot of my outfits work, and if I take that away, I have to be much more mindful of the tops I wear. I need the contrast, and in all the other months I tend to get that contrast a dark layering piece over a light/bright top. If I'm going to skip the layering piece, I need to move my tops into a slightly darker range. For example: in the spring, I commonly wear an icy mint tee with a navy or purple cardi over it. In the summer, I can't just leave off the cardi and expect the mint to work. It's too light for me. I need to move into an emerald range. Similarly, my pinks need to hit that berry range, and my purples need to move away from lavender and into the royal purple range. I cannot wear those 'icy pastels' as stand-alone colors. 2) It's wild how much nail polish matters. I have to be very mindful of my nails in the summer. I 100% regret my choice if I deviate from navy or a raspberry pink. I can play with a much broader range of pinks in the spring, and I can go wild in the winter as long as I plan a couple of weeks of outfits at a time. In the summer, though, I need to respect the formula. 3) I needed to chill about my shoes. In general, my summer wardrobe is more casual than any other season. My go-to shoes most of the year are black flats, but they seem unreasonably formal-looking starting in June. This summer I decided to stop looking for summer shoes 'in my palette'. Instead, I pulled out an old pair of huaraches in a cognac color that is decidedly NOT in my palette, and I picked it up with the strap of a straw purse. This has worked surprisingly well (not to mention I love those shoes). I also bought a pair of sandals in a cream color that, again, is NOT in my palette. I can't wear them with white, but I'm not wearing a lot of white in the summer. I can't even begin to explain how much of a game-changer this is for me in terms of making the vibe work. Honorable mention: I brought a pair of khakis back into my wardrobe. I find that they're far enough from my face that they don't drain my color, and they are opening up a whole world of black and blue tops that I'd been shunning because they felt so dark and heavy in the summer months when I wear them with denim or black. I know I could wear those colors with white, but I'm incredibly self-conscious wearing white on my bottom half. Khaki has been a good compromise. Color-wise, I struggled most to find my autumn-month vibe, but once I worked out the formula, it's pretty easy. The problem was that there isn't much for me to lean into during those months. I can tolerate a bit of warmth, but anything brown-influenced is just toxic on me. I also really need contrast. Bright and high-contrast is not usually what we think of when we think of October. I've found that my most successful outfits in the fall are built off of denim/navy and burgundy, and my burgundy needs to lean purple (almost like a plum brandy color). It's the closest I ever come to a capsule wardrobe. Winter is tougher precisely because I do have so many options. I mentally divide winter into December (which is red and black-leaning and can tolerate some gold) and January (which is fuchsia and navy-leaning and requires strict adherence to silver). If I don't do that, I'm constantly running afoul of my nail polish and accessories. It doesn't help that I just don't like the winter months, so by February I'm ready to embrace spring even if I'm jumping the gun. Ironically, I think spring is the most effortless season to get dressed in. I lean hard into navy/denim and bright pink accents with emerald, purple, lavender, and mint tops, often with white stripes or polka dots. It's here that I can play with yellow because I'm contrasting it with cool and vibrant colors. I love pink, and there's a whole galaxy of pink nail polish and lipstick to choose from. I walk away from black without looking back. I grab a white purse and keep a bright pink cardigan handy in case the weather doesn't keep up with my optimism and I'm set.

Well I am a dark autumn but I have a lot of clearness and some brightness; in addition to being neutral than warm. I can borrow a lot from winter, all the springs & other autumns, some of the summers. My best colors are brown and I can wear almost all of them, as long as they arent my skin color. My second best color is blue, followed by white and then green. I have a casual/natural style; that is enough to take me through the year, and most of the colors I wear are neutrals anyway. When I want more color I stick to my main and close pallets only (true autumn and dark winter) ie for oranges, reds, pinks, purples, metallics to round out the colors.

Oatmeal is also a good coat colour. I think you can wear your seasonal colours at any time of year, just find the appropriate textile and it will have the ‘essence’ of the season.

Great topic, thank you! I'm cool and soft (closest to True Summer). At this time of year, I have to remember that I'm losing contrast due to blonde streaks from the sea and a slight tan - but I'm not becoming warm. So I borrow the coolest shades within Soft Summer. In Winter I can borrow slightly from True Winter. I have saved this video to watch again so that I don't attempt warm shades for clothes, or worse still, make up, when Autumn comes. Blush pink or muted berry are my equivalent.

I'm a winter and during summer my dark ashy brown hair softens and my skin can gain a light grayish-peachy veil (it's the best I can tan): I have to lower my contrast and say goodbye to dark purple and bright fuschia. So I borrow the darkest colours of soft summer and its light neutrals like and the brightest of cool summer nuances. - If I tan I gravitate towards soft white or desaturated beige gold champagne silk, taupe linen, ruby red coton and jade green denim vest. - If I didn't tan I use navy, jade or wisteria purple + soft white stripes as pops of colours, the fuschia+ royal blue combo, and recently I added cool lemon yellow or chartreuse green to be more beachy and festive. - I would say: medium universal colours can be a good tip in summer for deep winters + white background prints. - All year around, my capsule wardrobe is mainly made out of navy, black, burgundy, pine green, amethyst and berries in lace, velvet, wool, coton or leather fabrics. For the prints, I enjoy bright colours such as funfetti polka dots or cool paisley on deep backgrounds.

Funnily, Summer is the best season for me to wear black and also white. In Winter I gravitate towards softer and warner colors because black and pure white are to harsh for my skin tone (I think I'm an Autumn), but when I get a tan I can tolerate more contrast. I know the undertones don't work that way, but I swear is true. At least it is what I see P.S. I love the color of that lipstick on you!

I am a dark autumn with a very pale ivory skin and go to my peaches and apricots in tee shirts in summer, plus I wear ivory and orange stripes, but never pure white which makes me look as if I am wearing a hospital gown! Beiges and camels do not suit my pale skin, so I need a bit of colour. Many turquoises are fine too, and of course many kharki greens go with all these and look a bit safari summery. I do envy my husbands summer colouring sometimes though, as he can wear navy, and white which always looks so fresh and smart, and kills me stone dead.

I think it's relatively easy for winter types to dress in the summer months. If they want to dress in dark colours, they can always choose the right fabrics of the clothes and shorten the length of the sleeves and hem. They can simply show more skin, which provides contrast. Jewelry and some accessories also sometimes help for better aesthetics. But on those really hot, sweaty days, they're not practical. On the contrary, it is difficult for the lighter types to find nice outfits on wet days with rain and snow. They should cover themselves with clothes that do not show the dirt easily if they don't wanna ruin them. Anyway, the problem will always be finding something in your style in the right colour, cut and size for your values and budget. For example, it may take years before you find a suitable jacket.

The only exception is that my heavy winter coat has Winter's navy and pure white, along with blue red. I also have gloves in the Winter palette. I know I've seen your summer hat in your recent summer travel video where you showcased your handmade dresses and I'm wondering if i can pull something like that off. Any off white still looks off on me and i really do look best in a bright pure white, so I'm nervous to invest in a hat and feel like it doesn't jive well with my limited wardrobe.
